Wings were most certainly not the favorite in '97. Colorado was the favorite; the Wings were the #3 seed and many people did not pick them to win it. Even after getting to the Finals, lots of people didn't think the Wings could match up with the Legion of Doom.

Standings didn't make a difference. The Wings have been favorites without winning the Pres trophy. They had been favorites for the last 2 seasons before that too. The media pretty much gave the cup to the Wings once they acquired Shanny and Murph.

Yes I did hear what he said, and what I got out of it was, as usual the Wings don't have what it takes to win the cup. This year it's goal tending; and for the last 2 cups it's been," the Wings are too small, too old, not gritty enough, blah, blah, blah." Just once I would like to see him give the Wings a little respect. Of course that would mean we are probably not going to win, but you never know: the sun shines on a dog's ass once in a while and he might actually get it right.

Yess the man is entitled to his opinion, just like I am of the opinion that he is a bag of assholes. <_<

The question was who is the favorite to win. He didn't say the Wings can't win, he said they aren't the favorite because of their goaltending. Do you think the goaltending to this point has been championship caliber?

wait, you mean someone actually isn't picking the wings as a favorite and is citing osgood's atrocious GAA nad SV% as a reason?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I think Conks has shown he has what it takes. He has had a few bad games, sure. So has Nabby and Kipper. Osgood, not so much. Do I think they will get it together for the playoffs? absolutely. My point is that Clement has never had any respect for the Wings.

And that he is a giant ****** bag.

I would be very hesitant to compare Conklin to Nabby and Kipper. He has had a good year, but I would take either of those other two over Conks in a heartbeat. And that, I believe, is Clement's point.

As for his past respect, or lack thereof, for the Wings, I honestly haven't paid him that much attention, so I'll have to take your word for it.

Fair enough, but I would also point out the Wings are 10 points ahead of the Flames (yes I know they got some depth today), and 1 behind San Jose. They must be doing something right, even with the "less than horrible" goaltending Clement says we have. It can't be said that the Wings are in a week division either. However I would agree that there is no comparison to Kipper, or Nabby.

Anyways, Clement reminds me of Ned Flanders, but even more annoying

Of course, we're doing a lot of things right. Our forwards and defense rival any team's, from top to bottom, and I think Clement even acknowledged that. Some people say defense wins championships, some say offense, some say goaltending ... it sounds like Clement thinks goaltending is most important. If our goaltending picks it up we'll be tough to beat.

And yeah, I can definitely see Ned Flanders :hehe:

(can't forget the LA Kings choke)

Thanks, I was actually trying to forget that one. That hurt almost as bad as 1996 because one of my best friends is a Kings fan.

I watched a few hours of the trade deadline coverage, switching between three channels, but every time the Pierre/Jones panel was on TSN I switched the channel.

Wings have still been doing well despite Osgood's worst season and lots of ho-hum efforts on any give night. If I was an analyst, I would point out that the goaltending for Detroit probably couldn't get any worse, but if it only got a little better, the Wings are clearly the team to beat.
