Martin Brodeur: Great Goalie, Questionable Morals

Days after breaking the NHL victory record, Devils goalie Martin Brodeur was dealt an alimony setback by a New Jersey appeals court.

The court ruled that Brodeur must pay his former wife $500,000 a year until 2020, the year his youngest child will graduate from high school.

The couple married in August 1995. According to court records, the marriage ended after Brodeur admitted to having an affair with his sister-in-law, who was living with the Brodeurs to help take care of their four children. DuBois filed for divorce in May 2003.

Is it really necessary to air out a man's dirty laundry? People make mistakes and it's unfortunate. Why do people insist on recalling someone's past only once they have done something great? Give the man his due; he is one of the best goalies in the history of the game. Leave the past in the past. I'm sure he's moved on and so should you. Brodeur is the man!

The full article said that he had only wanted to pay until he retires. The court said he had to pay until the youngest kid graduates.

They did not say if this alimony was in addition to child support, or was to be considered child support. If it is to support the children, I would hope he would want to continue until they're grown. I don't understand why a guy should support his ex-wife, but he certainly should support his kids.

Does anyone know if this alimony was to support the kids, or if it was in addition to support?

Not one child, four. They have four kids. Their youngest was born in 2002, so he/she would be graduating from H.S. in 2020. So he has to pay alimony until that child graduates high school.

$500,000 a year seems a little excessive for 4 kids. Plus, wouldn't it make sense if that payment went down after each kid turned 18? Oh well, doesn't take away from the fact that Brodeur is arguably the best goalie in the history of the NHL.

Thank you... no man is perfect. I could give a damn what any player does on his own time in his own home, I don't think it's our business honestly. Didn't Shanahan at one point sleep with a teammate's wife? Let's rail on him and question his morals while we're at it.

This should not be a surprise to anyone. Professional athletes are notorious cheaters. In any sport, it's the norm, not the exception. The sister-in-law part is a bit over the top, but otherwise, this type of thing goes with the territory of the lifestyle pro athletes live.

Thanks for posting this and I completely agree with you. Everything he did was absolutely wrong, and even today he's still a jerk not wanting to pay kids what they deserve based on his lifestyle.

Do you have any statistics to back up your claim that "everyone" in America is cheating? I know the divorce rate is something like 50%, but people get divorced for reasons other than infidelity.

Then again, I wouldn't expect someone who called all the women posting in a GDT "fat cows" to be fair and even-handed.

Sorry, but I think you've been watching too much Entertainment Tonight and/or Jerry Springer. Hollywood marriages are a joke, but for the rest of the population 90% plus do not cheat. Yes, maybe half get a divorce, but it's usually for financial and other reasons.

There are tons of sports athletes with families. Stevie would never pull this sort of stuff. And cheating aside, not pay your proper child support.

To clarify a few things here:

Marty and his ex were already separated (though not officially divorced) when he boned his sister-in-law (who is his ex-wife's brother's now ex-wife). He wasn't so much cheating on his ex (who had already filed for divorce I think) but jacking his brother-in-law's chick. Still not cool, but anyhow.

The 3 sons live with him and his wife (the former sister-in-law)

The daughter lives with his ex. He already pays child support for her, and most likely has a college trust fund, etc.

The 500k/yr is for the ex-wife so she can "maintain her lifestyle" .. basically, she's making out like a bandit and won't have to work another day in her life. I certainly don't agree with Marty's actions, but at the same time that's just ridiculous.

It may be ridiculous, but that's what you get for trying to be a pimp. He should have kept it in his pants and divorced her if he wanted to be with someone else. I agree that it's none of our business, but if it's made public which it clearly was, there's nothing stopping people from commenting on it. If it had been kept private and it was leaked or the information was stolen and then put online, that's a different scenario.

If you live a public life, which athletes do for the most part......and you do something boneheaded....people will comment on it. Same goes for actors, musicians, politicians.....any public figure.
