Luongo on his way to Detroit?

...interesting article although it doesn´t seem very realistic imo (or we say goodbye to many of our current players;)

On the other hand if Roberto really wants to win the cup in the next years he has to come to Detroit. That´s for sure!!

BTW: I´m new on this site. Hope the link works fine...

Welcome to the forum : )

I don't see any possibility that the Wings would be able to sign Luongo next season, seeing aftter they sign either Hossa or Franzen they wouldnt have enough bucks left. It would be nice, but I am hoping the Wings allow Howard to play next season, and we have 2 other goalies in the minors who hopefully have a bright future.

I heard this on the radio today. On the radio they were saying that Luongo said he would take less to be in Detroit. I didn't want to say anything here though because they didn't provide a source.

He's never said that, at least not publicly.

What Roberto doesn't realize is that all NHL players who have the misfortune of being free agents in 2010 will have to take less, whether they want to or not.

If Lidstrom and Holmstrom retire, I'd say it's definitely in the realm of possibility.

And it should definitely be a consideration, as replacing Lidstrom is essentially impossible. Holland may have to re-evaluate his goaltending philosophy.

The cap going down + Luongo willing to take a paycut could also potentially result in a palatable contract as well.

I'm sure all NHL players are well in tune with the fact that their paychecks are going to decrease on the whole considering the economy. If we consider it, those who are directly affected by it consider it. I'm guessing Luongo means a general paycut from what he could earn on the market.

That said, I cant wait to see what the middle men of the NHL are going to make. Hopefully no more 55 point guys earning over 4M per year. Considering the way contracts used to be, I cant believe its even gotten that far.

I was just thinking that. Where are you going to find a defenseman of Lidstrom's caliber? Nowhere, that's where.

When he retires the Wings defense is going to get a lot less solid, and one way to remedy that would be to acquire a goaltender like Luongo.

Doubt it's going to happen, but it would be cool.

yeah maybe if he was willing to sign for under 3 mill. which isn't ever going to happen

Not really. It depends more on who retires, namely Lidstrom, how far the cap goes down, and who we trade this off-season, and possibly next.

If the cap goes down too much, and payroll deductions aren't instituted like they were when the cap was first imposed, then the market should be mayhem. A lot of teams will have to get creative with trades, buyouts, and FA contract offers.

Its essentially impossible to determine what moves can be made, and what moves are going to have to be made.

Losing Flip and Kronwall means we could sign a guy like Hossa, Luongo or Bouwmeester. This isn't "gutting" the lineup, we're stacked on defense in the future and at center also. Luongo or Bouwmeester, combined with Datsyuk and Zetterberg signed for the next five years ensure the Wings will be contenders for the forseeable future.

IF we keep Rafalski, Stuart and Kronwall around then Luongo is a must because without Lidstrom this defense is terrible. If you move Kronwall and Flip for a guy like Bouwmeester, it allows you to keep average goaltenders because the defense would be solid.

Actually, I don't think Holland has a specific philosophy on goaltending. I think I recall him saying that his philosophy is that you either build a strong defense OR have an elite goaltender. I think it was in a interview with Holland, Nill, Devellano, and maybe the Illitch's. Someone might still have the link to that article. They said since Lids gives us the strong D, they focus on a cheap goaltender and spend the rest up front. Also, wasn't it confirmed that Holland was prepared to offer Luongo 8m/year if he wouldn't have been traded at the draft?

You guys are also assuming that the "Lidstrom Cap" will still apply in a couple seasons and it won't. Its now the "Datsyuk cap". You're not going to see anyone else, including Luongo making more than $6.7 million a season. If Z and Datsyuk are taking less than $7 million, no other player on the team justifies it, including Luongo. And I don't think it'll be a problem, money was never a problem with Luongo, he just wants to play on a winning team.

Which is why I think Bouwmeester and Luongo would take less than market value to play here.

Luongo is already the second highest paid goalie in the league, if he wanted to be the highest, his cap hit would still only be $6.9 mill per season. Hes not going to get anything more than that on the open market.

This is something Holland should have in mind for when Lids does retire....which could be the season after next....or maybe not! I think Homer will most likely retire by that time, as hes been mumbling about it for a while now...

The absense of Lidstrom will require a substantial pickup in either a top goaltender, or a top D-man, and we can keep the current Howard/Larsson/etc goalie pipeline going.

I think its way too early to be able to judge what will happen....maybe wait until next off-season is over, we might have a better idea.

The biggest problem with our current defensive corps and goaltending is rebounds. Our undersized, offensive, puck moving D men are decent positionally but they get physically overpowered in the crease. With a goalie like Luongo, who swallows rebounds, it will extremely benefit this team. The rebounds from Conklin and Osgood kill this team.

It could also solve the question of who the Wings' captain would be when Lidstrom hangs 'em up. :P

Can somebody do a mock-up of a Luongo Wings jersey? The only generator I found was a crappy NHL2003 one that looked crappy.

I don't know about the other posters, but I was not assuming the Lidstrom cap would still apply. I was just saying we could use some of Lidstroms current salary to help sign Luongo. Right now Lids + Homer = 9.7 million. I don't think they will sign for that much the year after next.

Maltby, Lilja, Lebda, and Meech will be up too. So it would be ~12.9 million for Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Maltby, Lilja, Lebda, Meech, and Luongo. It's definitly feasable if Maltby and/or Holmstrom retires... maybe even Lidstrom. :(
