Duthie, McGuire, & McKenzie

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

That's right James Duthie, Pierre McGuire and Bob McKenzie have all chosen the Red Wings to be the back-2-back Champions once again. Personally I hate the curse of sportscasters picking your team to win it all but at least TSN has decided to show the Wings some love, finally. (Even though they've been relegated to TSN2.)

GO WINGS!!!

:octo: :champs: :octo:

Edit: There, I changed my post, that way all of you so offended by my use of irregardless can go back to bitching about something else. As a further suggestion, if you're so concerned about spelling and grammar perhaps you should take the time to edit wikipedia, they could use your help and your keen eyes.

McGuire is just awesome and passionate and Mckenzie has probably the most hockey knowledge of all the people on TSN (which also is the best hockey network in the world)

i'm honestly really surprised by this. i'd expect: "wings are a really good team, but their defense and goaltending will get them in trouble in the playoff grind." and i wouldn't be able to disagree on rational grounds.

it feels weird actually being favored to win...i honestly would have expected all these guys to pick the sharks. just seems like the safest bet at this point.

irregardless isn't a word!!!!

It's just considered to be incorrect do to the fact that the prefix and suffix denote the meaning to have a double negative. Unfortunately for the spelling-gestapo, once a word is entered into the Oxford English dictionary it is generally considered to have a permanent place in the language. And irregardless has been there quite snugly since the early 1920's. Similar to D'oh! made famous by Homer Simpson.

How do I know this? I had this same argument with a professor who gave me bonus marks for proving to him that irregardless is indeed a word, irregardless of whether or not it is correct.

Maybe they're buying into the Presidents' Trophy curse...a curse than only Detroit has seemed to be able to beat in recent years (2002, 2008).

Fun fact: Since the creation of the Presidents' Trophy in 1985-86, only seven teams have won the Cup after winning the Presidents' Trophy - the Wings being the only team to do it twice. As of the 2007-08 postseason, that only gives a 31% winning percentage to the top team in the league.

Irregardless = "not regardless" = "with regard to". You're still using it incorrectly unless you intend to take previously stated subject matter into consideration.

This ain't gonna help the Wings.

McGuire just sucks when he does work for NBC/Versus, who just happen to bleed their suckage onto him. For TSN he's perfectly alright, especially when working with Gord Miller, who is likely my favorite TV play by play announcer.

Duthie and Bob Mac are reputable hockey analysts no matter where they are and them picking the Wings shows they have confidence in this team, since they know it's a straight march toward the cup if the boys turn on that switch.

Edit: Oh, and "irregardless" is often used as an attempt to look smart. It's equivalent is, "regardlessless" (think about how smart one would look saying it that way), and no smart person with a decent grasp of the English language should ever be caught using that abomination of a word.

No they all picked the Sharks last year didn't they. Can't go the same two years in a row - variety is the spice of life...

Although that 31% is the best odds of any seed to win the Cup.

Since 1985-86, the Cup has been won by the team ranked:

1st overall: 7 times

2nd overall: 1 time

3rd overall: 4 times

4th overall: 3 times

5th overall: 2 times

6th overall: 2 times

7th overall: 2 times

8th overall: 1 time

So based on that history, the odds of winning are:

San Jose Sharks: 31.8%

Detroit Red Wings: 18.2%

Washington Capitals: 13.6%

New Jersey Devils: 9.1%

Chicago Blackhawks: 9.1%

Vancouver Canucks: 9.1%

Boston Bruins: 4.5%

Pittsburgh Penguins: 4.5%

Using the same numbers, the odds of each conference champion are:

WEST

San Jose: 46.7%

Detroit: 26.7%

Chicago: 13.3%

Vancouver: 13.3%

EAST

Washington: 42.9%

New Jersey: 28.6%

Boston: 14.3%

Pittsburgh: 14.3%

So based on overall standings of the past 22 seasons' Cup winners, the most likely finals result will be San Jose defeating Washington.

McGuire sucks

Agreed. He's the epitome of Captain Obvious.

I.E.

Pierre McGuire: So Nick (Lidstrom), you've done it...does this prove that a European can captain a team to the Stanley Cup?

If it were me I would've said, "what do you think dips***?" I hate questions that everyone knows the answer to. Why bother asking it?

Doesn't the monkey usually have more accurate predictions than the TSN panel?

Yes.

Everyone but Bob McKenzie. Maggie has never correctly picked the Stanley Cup Champion. Going back to 2003, she is .500 in the first round, 75% in the second, nearly 100% in the Conference final.

Ha, god I love Pierre. A man that can change his tone 22 times a minute, deserves my respect.

My only gripe about Pierre is the way he always states his commentary in the form of a question directed at Ed Olczyk. Larry Murphy has terrible cadence as the lead analyst, but when the three FSD guys get going it's entertaining to listen to. Pierre should consider himself a second analyst not a foil for Edzo.
