Vancouver Sweeps St. Louis

Hello Detroit fans! Canucks fan here and I am not here to trash talk, just join in with what I expect to be our next opponents discussions. I'm not sure the Ducks are going to win that series just yet but I hope so. The sharks have sucked balls every post season but they have Boyle and Blake now. We'll see but I kinda want the Wings in round 2 cause that series will be awesome.

VCR and DET split the season series with both teams winning on the road. Vancouver last played DET Dec 4 and it was a 6-5 loss in DET. All games were 1 goal games with each team taking turns with momentum so it looks to be a good series.

I'm not sure if I really like the thought of going against you guys but we here want a cup bad and every western conf winner must go through DET so might as well get it over with early while our legs are fresh.

Vancouver has had a transformation since you last saw them play and have been a much more consistent defensive team since around Feb 1. They have depth throughout the 4 lines and a solid 6 d-men with no superstars. They have Luongo who is becoming a game breaker this year much like the Hasek of the late '90s.

Detroit is the powerhouse. We have been watching your team win cups for what seems like eternity and you guys are the benchmark for a winning franchise league wide. I think this year we in Vancouver may have a good enough team to challenge you guys and possibly even win a series. With the emergence of gritty players like Burrows and Kesler, our forward lines have an element we havent seen out west since the early '90s, heart.

So heres hoping for a good series between us and dont be suprised if SJ upsets the Ducks in 7!!! Sounds funny to be an underdog after earning 117 points but when you suck in the playoffs like Joe Thornton and co. then you dont get no love!

After Naslund left, (good riddance) Kesler had my vote to become Canucks captain. He brings it every game and leads by example. Gillis and Vig kinda threw a curve-ball at us though when they made Luongo captain. Can't really argue with anything they've done this year though.

And I love what Kesler and Burrows said about Vanocouver. It bodes well for the Canucks future:

And just noticing your name.... what the heck is up with Osgood? He craps the bed for a year and then goes lights out for the playoffs. Jesus Christ, I was hanging my hat on Detroit having weak goaltending in the playoffs.

lol i like to call it sand bagging... but others will call it being a veteran and knowing exactly which games are most necessary and where to apply yourself fully when it counts. Anything that happened in the regular season is long forgotten by the time the 2nd round comes along... thats the real season for the detroit squad. "getting there (playoffs)" is the all but sleep walking stage for us lately ;)

Personally, I am looking forward to a Van-Det match-up. It sounds funny, but I think both teams have much to fear about each other.

Van has a solid team with scoring, depth and great team defense. Vancouver is getting the secondary scoring to back up the top guys. Roberto Luongo. And, that certain something that makes them tough for the Wings to play against. I think it's as a Van fan said above, the Nucks know the Wings exemplify the elite of the NHL and are a model Vancouver aspires to.

Detroit is, well, Detroit...and the Wings are firing on all cylinders a la the cup run of last year. Of all the teams in the West, the Wings have the skill guys that can beat Luongo one on one. I think the Wings have faced enough ridiculous goalies in the playoffs to know that even if you can't beat them one-on-one, you can do it with passing plays or deflections.

This could go seven! With home ice the deciding factor or course!

I think that was me who said that.

I'm not sure if the coaching staff or the players for Vancouver aspire to be Detroit specifically, because Vancouver is built quite different from Detroit and if Vancouver were to play like Detroit it might be a short series in Detroit's favour. The Canucks appear to be blazing their own path which is based on excellent goaltending, a well-rounded offence from top to bottom along with gritiness and a very nasty defensive core to play against. Trust me on this one, if we play you guys you're all going to hate Kevin Bieksa a great deal after a game or two because he can make Chris Pronger look like a legitmate Lady Byng trophy candidate. I think the clash of the two different styles may make for an excellent series.

Yes, well I wasn't saying that Van is trying to emulate us as such I was speculating on why the Nucks always get up for games against us and play us tough...I think they elevate their game against the Wings cuz they aspire to being, and are perhaps becoming an elite team...

As for Bieksa, nobody intimidates the Wings... Give Datsyuk a rough ride? He'll knock you on your ass, ask Chara...

You dont hit the wings out of a series, you shut down their offence and knock down passes/block shots. We do have guys who can do this in Mitchell, Johnson,Salo,Kesler so I dont think its Bieksa running around that will be a difference as much as team defence and the goalie standing on his head. I like our chances for the first time ever against the wings.

Canucks have a chance, but seriously, the Blues were not competition, neither were the Jackets.

The problem with the Canucks is, theirs one way they will beat Detroit, Luongo shutting them out. Detroit's defense is far better, offense far better, face-offs better, powerplays better. Canucks are a one dimensional team, who gets every win the same way, Luongo. If Luongo lets in an average of 2 goals a game, it'll be a sweep.

When the Wings are rolling in the playoffs, you don't shut down their offence; they have secondary scoring and depth o' plenty. You're right about the shot/pass blocking and needing your goalie play lights out though... The Wings have learned from their past post-season mistakes here, I think. If the Nucks block a lot of shots, the Wings will attack from down low or some other alternative. Luongo will have Holmstrom, Franzen and Cleary et al. in his way the whole damn series.

Damn Owl -- it's like your clock stopped ticking sometime back in the summer and you missed an entire season of hockey.

Seeing that they only won 10 games when the opposition scored 3 or more goals, they pretty much need Luongo or they wouldn't be close to the playoffs.

Thanks for giving me perhaps the most useless stat ever.

The Florida Panthers certainly did well with Luongo in net -- didn't they?
