Wings good at trading away duds

How can anyone seriously suggest that Yuri Butsayev or Jesse Wallin were duds?

Ah, Jesse Wallin, the big tough defenceman from Saskatchwen. Oh wait, no that was Cory Sarich taken 1 pick later, oh, what a waste.

But seriously, Yan Golubovsky was the worst dud we ever picked.

I think he meant fan animal and misspelled it. Maybe typing too fast. At least, that's how I read it anyway. I never thought of phenomenal.

Now that you mention it, phenomenal does describe his play that night.

Whichever... I'm still kind of holding my breath on Joey. In a way, I liked him, but at the same time I was never quite comfortable with him.

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw the title of this thread was that the Wings traded away Ted Lindsay. Of course, that had nothing to do with how well he played.

Anyone else remember Stacey Roest?

Yup, Believe he went to Minny? Another one that was highly reguarded like Darren Helm, and I was kinda sad to see him Go...But Like most of thses guys, never amounted to anything.

And Yeah, Sheppard Scored 50 goals for us in 93-94, then in 95-96 we traded him to the sharks for Igor Larionov. Sheppard went to Florida after that, and I believe that was the end of him. WE traded him at the perfect time.

What this thread really shows us....is that the Wings have gotten some real steals in the past little bit...yu'd think teams would catch on and stop Giving us something for our spare parts

I know that this is another free agent but Ray Whitney has had a pretty productive few years with Carolina since leaving the Wings.

Believe it or not, we bought out Whitney,...he got another name in Carolina "the wizard" for his unbelievable shooting accuracy through a mess of guys. I'll take who we've got any day though, and this coming from a guy who watches a lot of canes hockey ( I live in Raleigh)

I liked Cool Ray, but his contact was too big for what he was doing in Detroit in the cap world. He didn't get the ice time and didn't run the PP like he had in Columbus so his scoring suffered. Not that he was a bad player, but he was an easily replaceable cog in the Detroit machine.

How bout that damn dollar that we traded away for Draper. Boy how draper out performed that dollar.

Yeah, Draper was probably the best dollar this team has traded for.

Sad about the dollar... it could have been something with the exchange rate what it was. Could have settled down with a nice loonie, produced some interest, ended up in a nice pension... but no, there was that incident with a two-bit hooker that ended it all in scandal. When last seen, it was in Minot, ND being stuffed in a stripper's G-string. Sad, indeed.

Meanwhile, Draper settled down in Detroit, met a nice girl, had cute kids, won a Selke and 4 cups, wears the A, is a top faceoff guy, and grows a pretty nice playoff beard.

Life is just not fair.

Doing some reading about that dollar deal, I came across this article which I had never seen before, or really heard about. It concerns Draper for a dollar...interesting to me

But you never know, especially since not all futures are draft picks. One such deal around draft time a decade ago helped cement a dynasty.

On June 30, 1993, Detroit picked up a minor-leaguer from the then-Winnipeg Jets for future considerations.

"We ended up giving them a buck,'' said longtime Detroit exec Jimmy Devellano.

The return on that investment was center Kris Draper. Nobody forecast him as the glue to the "Crash Line," which helped check Detroit into three Cups in four years.

"Doug MacLean actually did that deal,'' Devellano said. "He was our assistant general manager at the time, and he was running our farm team at Adirondack. Doug knew Draper was a good minor-leaguer. So Draper went to Adirondack for three-quarters of a year and then came up to us.''

That exchange rate was not unusual.

The article goes on to list a bunch of deals that went down for a dollar...I never knew future considerations in a trade could turn out to be a dollar

The way he's played this season, Ilitch might think about asking for his money back. :hehe:

Just kidding. I actually like Drapes but couldn't resist the joke anyway. The trade was unusual because I've never heard of anything like it happening ever in any sport. It just sounds demeaning somehow when you're traded for a dollar. It'd be better if a guy was just traded for nothing. Even that would be less embarrassing than a dollar.

All this talk of past deals reminds me that there was an article in Crains Business magazine today about Jimmy Devellano, You have to pay to read the whole thing so I was wondering if anyone has read it and could summarize. Jimmy D's been great since leaving the Islanders for us and look at them now...
