He will change it up once he figures it out, Red Wings will get no broadcast, and Peguins will get all. Versus will be changed to Penguins TV!

Even if the Penguins aren't playing, Bettman will take over the Versus/NBC/FSD controls and put on the Cindy show 24/7! He's like a dictatorsaurus.

That is why Buttman won't move the Wings bak in to the Eastern Conference. If the Wings left the west, who would go to all those games in Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, etc... Heck, Nashville and Columbus may as well closeup shop if the Wings went East.

But Tampa (ah I-75 corridor of Midwestern transplants in Florida) would see an immediate huge attendance increase and Miami, Atlanta and to some extent Carolina would also get attendance boosts from more Wings games.

Red Wing Nation: We're everywhere.

This makes me all the more thankful I'm in Canada - our TV back home even has TSN2. That's amazing that they wouldn't show all the playoff games, there'd be riots up here if that happened.

The TSN2 thing absolutely rots me. I have Rogers, who doesn;t even carry TSN2, so lucky me has to find a way to watch game 1. Pisses me off. Before the round 2 schedule was released, I figured there would be 2 games Thursday, and 2 games Friday. One on CBC, one on TSN each night. There is no damn reason TSN2 should be needed beyond the first round. It is a joke.

I just really don't understand why Boston vs Carolina is getting favored over a series between the last two Stan;ey Cup champs. You'd think everyone would be going apes*** to try and get the rights to such a series.

You're wrong on this.

The Wings are the most popular team in America. I dare you to travel around the country and find people wearing Pens and Capitals jerseys the way you'll always see WIngs jerseys being worn.

The league is in denial. Gary Bettman is in denial. The Wings = ratings and have shown so in the past. When the Pens have legions of fans following them game to game, then I'll say differently.

I said from a marketing standpoint how many posters, advertisements, commercials promoting the NHL do you see that have a red wing as more of a focal point than Crosby or Ovie? none. The NHL is not trying to market to hockey fans, they are trying to market to the general public to increase ratings. Watching the most complete player in the NHL in Datsyuk in very enticing to people that actually know hockey, but the average sports fan is going to be drawn to a game involving Crosby or Ovechkin over Datsyuk 10 out of 10 times. I have 2 comments about your "jerseys all over the country" point. 1st of all, the wings may have been by far the most popular in the past, but the 87 of Pittsburgh and the 8 of Washington have been the 2 most popular selling jerseys the past two seasons, also based on the most recent figures i could find which were early this season, the Wings had only the 4th highest selling jersey, so if the Wings do still have the most popular jersey around the country (behind both Pitt and Washington), it does not appear likely to stay that way for long. Also, if people from other regions of the country are buying Red Wings jerseys, I'm very confident that most of those people are people that know hockey, and are already watching the NHL playoffs as it is, so from the NHL's point of view, why would you market to them? It'd be like inviting somebody to a party at your house when they are already sitting on your couch .....

1. Crosby and Ovechkin are no more exciting to watch than Datsyuk. If indeed the "average sports fan" is more drawn to Crosby/Ovechkin, it's only because they're being told that's who they're supposed to be drawn to. They could make Shane O'Brien the most popular player in the league if they wanted to, so why Crosby/Ovechkin and not the champs? Besides, the generally pathetic national ratings tell me the average sports fan isn't watching anyway, and the guy a little bit ago did a nice comparison showing that Wings' national ratings are often better despite the hype machine.

I'm not sure if my point's completely clear there, but essentially, I'm saying that the hype machine can point people in whatever direction they want, so I don't think pointing them at Pens/Caps reflects TRUE popularity. Starting tomorrow, they could cut them off and tell everyone that the Panthers are THE team, and "average sports fan" would bail and go watch them. If they were watching in the first place.

2. The Wings' popularity transcends individual players, the Pens' and Caps' doesn't. Once Crosby is retired or playing somewhere else, the Pens are back to being irrelevant. Proof? Pens post-Lemieux (before his last comeback) drew 8,000 per and almost moved to KC. Wings post-Yzerman were basically unaffected.

3. Player jersey sales don't count for much, because of #2. I'm guessing the Wings sell a good number of jerseys of more different players. Also, Washington and Pittsburgh have both undergone major jersey redesigns this decade, which always bumps sales. The Wings last did so in the 1930s. Finally, in my observation, Wings fans tend to hang on to dated jerseys more than most fans out there. Lots of Yzerman, Fedorov, Probert, etc. still out there. Even saw a Shawn Burr last time at the Joe, which was kinda weird. Basically, lots of reasons why you can't equate jersey sales with number of fans or TV ratings.

Granted, I don't watch the Pens and Caps as much as the Wings, but I don't think they're taking over arenas in the Pacific time zone like we do.

I take it VS has rights and that's why FSN isn't broadcasting anything?

Otherwise, why the hell are the airing the Tigers over the Wings? Also, does this mean we don't get to hear Mickey?

I hate Bettman and his Penguins. If we only get up to 4 games in this series despite it being the 2nd round, it'll be even more embarassing than what happened the last round.

Detroit/Anaheim will be the most exciting series so far in the playoffs. This is a huge mistake by the league if they decide to minimize Wings coverage.

Anyone know why the NHL network shows many games in the regular season but not the playoffs?

They really should get the NHL network more involved so that they can work towards getting all NHL playoff games televised.

Listen, I'm not saying what the league is doing is right, I'm just saying that this is how they do it, to try and bring in non-traditional hockey fans....... I also never said it was working, but regardless of if it is or isn't i doubt we'll see the NHL change the ways of their marketing campaigns anytime soon. Also, your point about Wings fans holding on to jerseys longer than "most fans out there" is baseless and not logical at all....How many people do you really think throw away their jerseys once the player is traded (as in the case of your Probert sightings), or retired? I have three Denver Bronco jerseys of John Elway, Brian Griese and Ed McCaffery and a Tennesee Titans jersey of Eddie George. Elway and McCaffery are retired and Griese hasn't been a Bronco for over 5 years, George is retired and I never even liked Eddie George or the Titans (Christmas gift from an uninformed aunt)..... However, whenever I go to a Lions game or am watching the NFL i pull those out......nobody gets rid of a quality jersey if there is nothing wrong with it (stains, etc.) especially with how expensive they are these days

and then work on getting every hockey fan the ability to actually get NHL Network. especially ones who live in supposed hockey states like Wisconsin. :ranting:

Great points -- I especially agree with #3 as to why wings jerseys do not sell as high. The Wings have had about 20 years of bandwagon fans jump on now - it has not been a one-time thing like Crosby or Ovechkin. I still have my Konstantinov jersey and am content to just hold onto that one. I still see more Yzerman jerseys than all the other jerseys combined.

No prob...I don't entirely disagree. That's how it started, but it sort of just evolved (devolved?) into a general, somewhat topical rant.

I guess my point with the jersey thing was something along the lines of: If you're a jersey buyer who likes a team (Caps) because of one player (Ovechkin), you probably have to buy the jersey of that specific player. You obviously weren't a fan before Ovechkin was around, so you don't have a Mike Ridley, and even if you did, you wouldn't be happy with it. If you like a team (Wings) because you like the team, your perfectly nice Probert jersey from 1992 works just fine. And hey, it's the exact same style we're still wearing, double bonus.

Sorry about your Eddie George. Anyone who gives me an O$U player jersey is off the Christmas card list...

Thats a good point, hopefully some of these people who are just in it to watch the OV's, Crosby's etc will stick around and develop into true hockey fans, if the NHL grows as a whole then maybe we will get to a point where the NHL doesnt have to shove the same two players down everybody's throat all the time and can start branching out as far as what players and teams they try to really "sell"......... I appreciate your condolences on the George jersey, it was the worst gift ive ever got lol
