I also think he seems selfish and always looks like he needs a bath...........

Hank Dats 'N Homer 81 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Ya know, i dont know if i agree with ydon cherry and you guys, i love seeing a celebration like he has. It shows his passion for the game, and i like seeing that in players that have big contracts like him, shows hes in it for hte love of the game rather than just the paycheck. I used to HATE it when Datsyuk would score a goal, and not even as much as crack a smile, but now he has broken through that "all business" attitude, and now you can tell that he really has fun out there, and even a guy like dats will celebrate a little after each goal. he might not go crashing into the boards, or pretend like his stick is on fire, but i have to admit, watching Ovie do some of these things excites me about hte game. Now does he need to do it when the caps are up 5-1 and he scores a meaningless goal? or puts an empty netter in? No. But i love his enthusiasm about the game and you can tell his guy gets a thirll every time he scores, even though it has seemed to become a routine thing to the fans. I mean look at what the owner said ..."he is single handedly the best thing that has ever happened to our orginization....we sell out every game in the regular season, every game in playoffs, profits are up 40% from last year" thats amazing for the way the economy is. This guy is nothing short of spectacular, and you guys have to not forget that hes only 23 years old. hes so young and is just having a good time getting paid to do something hes been doing since he could walk. Maybe he will cool it when hes older and wiser, but let the kid do what he wants to do. With all that said, i cant really agree with his off ice hobbies of driving 180-220 mph and im actually quite shocked that a guy who was so close to an older brother who was killed in a CAR ACCIDENT would drive with such wreckless abandonment. Thats one thing i DO NOT agree with and cant see how a guy that has gone through that could do something like that. But with that said, id say Ovechkin is anything BUT an "*******" like many of you have stated. The guy is good for hockey and is GREAT for washington. Let the kid play. I mean look who everyone was hyped about before Ovie took center stage...Crosby. Now theres a guy i cant stand. Complains about everything, montoned in every interview, doesnt seem to loook anyone in the eyes while doing interviews. If there is anyone who thinks hes hot s*** with an "*******" persona id say it would be a guy that just doesnt look like hes having fun on the ice, but it out there because its expected of him. He seems like the kid that plays hockey because dad forced him to go every day. we all played with those kinds of kids on our teams haha. I'll take a guy that is fun loving, exciting to watch, who gets excited when he makes a big play, over a guy like crosby as the face of the franchise any day of the week. thats my two cents, so in conclusion LAY OFF. haha

RyanK 1 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Ove is my favorite player outside of the Wings roster, pretty much for all those reasons. He's fun to watch and he scores CRAZY goals.. my dream would be Wings/Caps in the finals, so I could see all my favorites on the ice. Cindy Crosby on the other hand I hate worse than pronger and that kid that cries in the movie theater or airplane seat behind you combined.
Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 (edited) I think Ovechkin is much more interesting than Crosby. On and off the ice. As for the celebrations.. who cares what he does after the goal? He can do whatever he wants. Thanks for the video Edited May 3, 2009 by Reds4Life
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Greatest offensive threat in hockey. Most energetic and explosive player I've ever seen. Great guy. haha Loved his robot thing about not celebrating haha. The guy deep down is a sweet guy, and the funny thing is that because he is emotional, he is more relateable then Crosby who is only emotional in a negative way when he is complaining. I think Ovechkin has done a lot for hockey already. Not that I want the over-the-top crap we see in NBA and NFL, but he has lifted a bit of stuffiness from the game, and I like that. Love the quote from a few days ago when asked about Crosby: "He's Superstar", when then asked about himself in contrast: "Me? I'm just like you guys!" (obvious pander, but great stuff all the same)
Hank Dats 'N Homer 81 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Hank Dats 'N Homer "Slurp" Does Chad Johnson have more passion for the game of football than Heniz Ward? EDIT: Sp first off i think you mean Chad Ochocinco. secondly, Terrible comparison. Does Ovie think he is bigger than the game itself? Does he think he is the best player out there? Is he a poison to his team? No. Ovie celebrates out of pure excitement for scoring a goal. He doesnt do it to show up the other team like football players do. However, yes his pretending that his stick was on fire was a little much, and a sign of disrespect i cant argue with that. Premeditated stuff like endzone dances to me are just a form of showing off. I dont feel Ovie does that. He did that once this year, 1 out of 54 aint to bad in my book, and i stick by my main convictions that his enthusiasm is what makes him electric and exciting to watch. However, this may just be my undying burning desire to disagree with EVERYTHING that don cherry says...which, if the case, then i apologize haha

TO didn't do anything that crazy after TDs his first couple years either. I pretty much agreed with you until it came out that the burning stick thing was premeditated. If it's coming from a place of genuine excitement, that's cool, but that showed that it isn't all the time with him. As far as I'm concerned, Ovie is a great player, but he definitely has a massive ego. I take pride in the fact that the NHL doesn't have these same kinds of things you see in other sports. You call it stuffiness, I call it class.

Like the Kinda guy that would not use his turn signal. Well I am a die hard American and even I have to put up with half of my own country men being backwoods, hillbilly, assholes. Don't forget, this is the county that wanted to start a movement to change the name of "french" fries to freaking "freedom" fries b/c we got our feelings hurt. I don't have to like it that he's Russian or that he comes off in a certain way. But instead of hating on him for it, I just respect it. I'd want the same respect shown to me. You can be proud of where you are from without it putting down anybody else. People just have thin skins sometimes.
FedorovGurl 2 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Thanks for posting that video! I love that man. I love watching him play, I love his enthusiasm after his goals or that of his team mates as well, and how he exudes passion for the game. I love that even though he is hockey elite, he never takes himself too seriously. Its sad about his brother, but it seems he overcame it and made the best of an unfortunate situation ( unlike Jordin Tootoo who's brother killed himself and he became a jerk). OV rocks!! KronwallCRUNCH 5 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Ovechkin's goals, celebration, and attitude are all awesome, and gr8 (get it?) for the game. Fans have been longing for the league's savior for a long time; a guy that sparks interest, and gets people that might not have watched, to watch. He's arrived, and it's not Sidney Crosby. From what I've seen, the only people that really dislike him are fans of divisional rivals, and people that still maintain that Crosby is the best in the NHL. GO AO! Theophany 110 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 Without Ovie, hockey's image rests on the shoulders of one Sidney Crosby. Enough said. Exactly. Ovie brings fun to the game for people who wouldn't normally watch hockey. A guy I went to high school with grew up and was never really into hockey like he was football. I showed him some Ovie youtube clips, and he was going from clip to clip on youtube for at least an hour; he's now watching the playoffs and getting into hockey. Granted, we're both from Chicago, so he likes the wrong team (my dad is from Detroit, so I grew up a Wings fan, of course), but Ovie is definitely bringing more people into the sport with his style of play. It's hard to not like that.
