Datsyuk Finalist for Pearson Award

The Red Wings' Pavel Datsyuk was named on Wednesday as a finalist for the Lester B. Pearson Award, given to the "most outstanding player in the NHL'' as voted by fellow members of the NHL Players Association. Alex Ovechkin of Washington and Evgeni Malkin of Pittsburgh are the other two finalists. The same three were the finalists for the Hart Trophy as league MVP.

Here's a portion of the press release from the NHLPA:

"For the first time in the history of the Lester B. Pearson Award, all three finalists hail from Russia. This year will mark just the third time that a Russian player will accept the honour, following Sergei Fedorov (1993-94) and Ovechkin (2007-08). Ovechkin is looking to win the Pearson Award for the second consecutive season, and is now a three-time finalist for the award (including 2005-06). Malkin is also a finalist for the Pearson Award for the second consecutive season. Datsyuk is a Pearson Award finalist for the first time in his NHL career.

Datsyuk had an outstanding all-around season for the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings, tying his personal best in points (97) and is a finalist for three other major individual honors in 2008-09: the Hart Memorial Trophy, the Frank J. Selke Trophy, and the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. Malkin was instrumental in helping lead the Penguins back to the postseason, while topping all NHL scorers with 113 points this season, and will receive the Art Ross Trophy for this achievement. Ovechkin had another phenomenal season in Washington, finishing second in the league in points (110) and leading the NHL in goals (56) to capture the Maurice Richard Trophy.''

In addition to Fedorov, the only other Red Wing to win this award since its inception in 1970-71 was Steve Yzerman in 1988-89.

I believe he has a lot better shot at winning this than the hart because this is voted by the NHLPA.

Datsyuk shouldn't be nominated, even if this is based on regular season he is a no-show in the playoffs

Are you really even a Wings fan? All you do is complain about how they suck and they're going to lose every game! Sounds like a bandwagoner to me.

Awesome news! Congrats, Pasha!! The Wings need to fly him to Las Vegas on the team plane and send a couple of other team mates with him to help him carry all the hardware home.

Win it all, baybee!!

I think he has a bigger chance of getting this one than the Hart.. but still Malkin and Ovie will most likely split them, or Ovie will take both.

Still a great honor.

And mindfly is a joke. A sad, worn-out joke.

Congrats to my favorite Wing. Now getting your scoring touch back so we can beat the Ducks silly. Go Wings!!!!

They're going to have to nominate Datsyuk for the first "Casper" award if he doesn't step it up and pop for a few goals in Game 4. This is getting annoying. He's too good for this crap.

Why are you here? Can't you find a job pissing in Wheaties or raining on parades? I really think you missed your calling ...

Way to go, Pavel ... well deserved!

I'll bite. In your opinion, if not Pavel who should've been nominated that wasn't?

This should be good.

Crosby.

Crosby.

During the regular season, Crosby wasn't the most outstanding player on his team (that's why Malkin is a finalist) ... why would he be voted most outstanding player in the league?

I'm very proud of Pasha...no matter what happens. It's long overdue that he get some of the good things he deserves.

And mindfly, one question. Might I ask who peed in your beer? GROUCH!!!!

He might win this. If anyone appreciates and truly recognises how dominant Pavel was this year, it's the players.

My opinion exactly.
