Jersey Wing 1,521 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 Would it be out of the ordinary for an article to come out about Crosby whining that no one threatened him? Crosby is upset he only got ONE threat on forums across North America whereas Ovechkin got hundreds
Rivalred 630 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 (edited) Hmm.. slander.. death threats.. Are we on a tangent? I thought some TV news anchor was fired for posting slander on the net? Referring about posting ANY information on the internet that be considered harmful to ones quality of life, nothing else. Anyways; death threats are serious and need to be investigated. Simple as that. Edited May 7, 2009 by Rivalred
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 (edited) First of all, it doesn't matter if it's the internet. Things can get started on the internet that will get finished up in real life. It's happened before, maybe not over a hockey player, but that's not the point. If someone on this board threatened to kill me or commit bodily harm upon me or any member of my family, I don't take that post as a joke. Because who jokes about killing someone? Someone with severe mental issues maybe, but then that person needs help. Do I think this kid was going to kill Ovie? No. But the police have a duty to react as though he was. If they didn't and God forbid something happened, Ovie's family would have their badges. Edited May 7, 2009 by Electrophile
#18 the _Hoss_ 2 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 OffTopic but i love Crosby's facial expression And I think it should be made clear to not even joke about stuff like this.
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted May 7, 2009 (edited) I thought some TV news anchor was fired for posting slander on the net? Referring about posting ANY information on the internet that be considered harmful to ones quality of life, nothing else. Well, these are on quite different levels. More aptly, one might refer to an article (which I can't find at this time) where a person actually traveled across state lines to go through with a death threat given to a person online. Whether they actually were successful or not I'm not sure. Nonetheless, this is something to be taken far more seriously than some strange slander issue. Edit: LOL @ Crosby/Ovy pic. henrik40 76 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 If they are looking into this they might want to look at some old Hossa threads on there. I'm pretty sure I saw several comments similar to the one made about Ovie. I think it's a little overblown, but I guess if they think it's serious then there is a need to investigate it. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 Next thing you know the kid will say... Seriously now, I know things can get overheated in sports and fans gets emotional and stuff, lord knows we've seen plenty of people go off the deep end in here. But when you actually have more time to type your thoughts out vs. saying them in the heat of the moment where you aren't thinking as much and it's quicker, it'd seem to me that stuff like this should be easy (or easier) to avoid when it is typed out. I'm not the sharpest nail in the tool box though so I dunno...
CdnWingsFanEh 2 Report post Posted May 7, 2009 Do the investigation. It doesn't mean there will or won't be charges, but tak ethis seriously. The world is full of crazy people. Better to be safe than sorry. Isn't the internet wonderful? Please note, I have emoted with an emoticon...
Vincanni 1 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 This should prove interesting to watch develope. I get the feeling the end result will be some 13 year-old losing internet privileges for the rest of his non-adult life.

mjlegend 155 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 Evidently the kid is 17, and will now become the cool guy in high school. Jesus, I remember high school. Nobody at 17 is mentally stable. I thought this was going to turn out to be a drunk dude from some Wilmington bar on their Blackberry talking out of his ass. On second and third review, the "i don't care anymore" part sounded kind of ominous. How old was that DC sniper again?
Vincanni 1 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 Evidently the kid is 17, and will now become the cool guy in high school. Knew it was a minor. Seems most kids under 18 nowadays have had the internet their entire life and don't understand that occurrences their can have ramifications in real life. Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 This is a JOKE. You have to be kidding me. You know how many times something like that has been posted on a message board? That's why there are message boards. Everyone says tough things and acts tough on message boards because in real life, they're just passive geeks who like to joke around and drink beer like almost everybody else. I bet you it wouldn't take too long to go through the posts in the games in which we got trounced in past playoff performances and find a "Pronger again. Man, I want to kill that guy" post. Are we going to arrest everybody who uses the word kill? Come on. This needs to be put to rest as a stupid waste of time.
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 Knew it was a minor. Seems most kids under 18 nowadays have had the internet their entire life and don't understand that occurrences their can have ramifications in real life. No. Most 17 year olds don't understand, and for good reason, that there are idiots out there that can't distinguish between a legitimate death threat and something ALL OF US have said on an internet message board, before a school fight in 6th grade, to a brother after he pushes you in the pool, to a friend after he puts a cigarette in your beer and you take a swallow, etc. This whole thing is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. I can't believe it.
therock48880 14 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 With all the crazy people going in and blowing people away at schools and alien centers (or whatever that place was) and going on massacre's every time we turn on CNN, then yes, this needs to be looked at and taken very seriously. You cannot trust people, threats need to be taken seriously. If this wasn't taken seriously and people get killed, could you imagine all the outrage because it wasn't taken seriously... and could have been avoided. I can't decide who's worse, Pens fans or Ducks fans... Pens fans, no doubt in my mind. I've read so many comments from them wishing career-ending injuries on Hossa, Ovie, Hartnell, and half of the Rangers team that they have cemented their place as the lowest fans out there. This death threat doesn't really suprise me much considering it's Pens' fans.
thedisappearer 291 Report post Posted May 8, 2009 This is bogus. Caps fans are *******. So much for me liking them... The guy was obviously frustrated from Ovie dominating his team. I have said things like 'Oh, I wish Pronger would die' and what not. This is ridiculous. People say a lot of stuff on the internet that they don't actually mean; its tough to decipher sarcasm on a computer screen. Nonetheless that's what it is. Nothing more, nothing less. Caps fans should get over it and stop being babies about it. Going out of their way to cause trouble for that guy? Come on now... Yeah. The Caps fans are the assholes here. This 17 year old, who said some very dumb s*** about killing someone, is obviously just the new posterboy for freedom of speech. I heard he yelled FIRE in a crowded theater last month and got grounded. The world is so unfair.

As much as I believe you're right, that this kid didn't really mean it, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously. What if this had ended with Alex dead? I hear what you are saying. You're making a good point. I just know that the police would have to investigate a million death threats a day if they were to track everytime someone threatened to kill someone online in a message forum or chat room. I've gotten those threats plenty of times. Some guy once told me he wanted to meet up with me and fight me!!! I gave him my address (as stupid as that was), and the guy never showed. I haven't been in a fight since 4th grade, and I was so fricking scared when that happened. But I was kind of holding onto my stupid pride like that guy in the other thread and didn't want to back down. Oh well. I can understand your side of it too. He must've been scared because you're so darn tough. That text just reeks of Class-A e-toughness. I doubt the boy will be prosecuted now, but I'm sure the police knocking at his door certainly woke his ass up as to how seriously threats like this are taken. What matters is learning a lesson here, and some need to learn the hard way. If this ended up with Ovy in a body bag, there'd have been no end in sight as to the complaints of how the police didn't take this seriously. Akin to yelling FIRE in a crowded building, there's a limit as to how far speech can be taken.
