Why are we paying Franzen 4 mil?

We will enjoy. I am glad you are not our GM. Neither of them will have a $4 or $6 Million cap hit when they get older, they'll have a $1 Million cap hit. If Zet is in his second to last year of his contract, he is making $1 Mil for the next two years. Average those two $1 Mil's out, and you get a $1 Mil cap hit! Woohoo!!!

Sorry bud, but no. The player's cap hit remains the same for the duration of his contract; for Franzen, each of his 11 years will have identical cap hits. As far as I am aware, this cap hit is calculated by taking the total contract value and dividing it by the years, straight up. I might be wrong on that, though.

So yes, when Franzen is 40, he'll still have a $4 million cap hit. However, because his last years have so little money on them, the Wings have the option to buy him out of his contract for only the remaining value of the contract, not nearly as much money. Besides that, Franzen and Z both have the option of retiring whenever they like and if that happens, their salaries are wiped off the books.

I distinctly remember the majority of people on this site saying that Franzen wasn't worth more than $4m before he was signed.

Now we want to know why we're paying him only $4m?

This is what I was going to post.

How does the whole buying out a contract thing work??? Is this something that gives the teams with more money like the Wings an advantage in the cap era, because they can give these front loaded contracts, then buy them out once the player is older and the cap hit needs to come off the books?

If the contract is bought out, can the player resign for another team, or with the same team again for a new contract??

Contract buyouts still cost the team money against the cap. I'm not exactly sure how it works; the last time buyouts were really used was right after the lockout--when the Wings bought out McCarty, Hatcher, and Whitney--and they didn't count against the cap at that time. Teams don't have that free pass anymore.

Players who are bought out become unrestricted free agents and can sign with any team EXCEPT the team that just bought them out. I believe there's a one-year waiting period there.

You would not want to buy out a decreasing contract like Zetterberg or Franzen have - it would be a dead weight on your cap (for years) -- the Islanders still have Yashin on their cap, for example. The one-year waiting period only applied in that first year buyout option.

I tried to make this point earlier sandman, he could retire it would come off of the books.

Then in about 6 months pull a neidermayer/forsberg and come back for a brand new 1 mil a year that is really a mil a year!

I think this rule actually goes away after this year

I have a hard time seeing Zetterberg and Franzen being dead weights at the end of their contracts.

Just look at what Näslund did for the Rangers, a team that did not deserve it. Yet he retired and brought his salary off the books. Does anyone really think that Zetterberg and Franzen will hesitate from retiring if they aren't contributing at the needed level?

I'd like to think that would be the case but there are plenty of examples of formerly great players overstaying their welcomes to the detriment of a team....Messier anyone?

He gets a lifetime supply of Hot-n-ready, something that Illitch gives out very rarely.

Does that go with a gimp suit?
