Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 Rafalski over Gonchar ten times out of ten. He's not only pound-for-pound better than Gonchar, but also far better suited for this system. Seeing him QB the umbrella on the PP gives me chills sometimes. His passes, the way he sees the ice -- it's pretty incredible. Plus, he knows what it takes to win. And with different clubs. Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 better at what? Gonchar is better defensively (yes really) and he is far better PPQB.
RoninJai 5 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 Rafalski over Gonchar ten times out of ten. The addition of Rafalski to this club made the Wings infinitely better, I really believe that. I didn't think he'd have as much of an impact as he did, but there it is. The fact that we can put both Lidstrom and Rafalski on the ice, separately or together, to run this system, should make other teams openly weep at their misfortune. Snazzy 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 Gonchar is good for what he is. But he would be on our 3rd man at best... but that wouldn't be an upgrade, since Stuart and Kronwall are absolute beasts in the playoffs. I'll take Stuart and Kronwall over a powder puff QB (since we have Lids and Ralfi).

DYags 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 I think this might be one of those times that a lot of people are showing their blantant biased against a Pens player. Gonchar is a top notch player even though he's more O than D. If he ever played for the Wings he'd be a stud as a second line D-man. He doesn't shut people down the way Stuart or Kronner, but I feel like that's the result of their system. The team doesn't commit to playing defense the way teams in the Western Conference do. If he played in the West it'd be a different story; esp. if he played for the Wings.
PenaltyShot 96 521 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 He plays a tiny man's game. He's one of the reasons I laugh when people get on Mule's case for being "soft." Also, I'm 6'4. So just about everyone's tiny to me. You certainly showed up Dale in your avatar...
Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 I believe the OP was implying that Gonchar would "play for us" the same way Campbell is "playing for us" right now. Or at least that's what I got out of it, which made me laugh. Remember kids, there is no D in Gonchar. Did you steal that from me? But it's true. If he was actually on the Wings he'd be our 3rd D-Man, at least Raf plays a little defense. Gonchar puts up some sick amount of points.
Cern 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 I just don't see Gonchar as a defenseman so much as a PP quarterback who happens to be on the blue line. In any case, he still dosen't look 100% after that hit to his knee.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 Irregardless of size the guy isn't physically imposing in any way. And I wouldn't take him over any D we have right now. Not even Lebda. The guy doesn't play D, he's a PP quarterback more or less. Really? He'd make our 2nd PP absolutely killer. Like crazy awesome. Gonchar puts up similar numbers to Lids on the PP. I'm aware of his horrible defensive issues, but hey, we had Schnieder here and all that...

Marty Midnight 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2009 Gonchar has his brain holes now and then. At his best he's #2, when he's off he's more like #4. The Pens future is Letang, but he is still simmering.
