The Mule 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 More than confident in Leino to pick up the slack, assuming he is given proper ice time and linemates to work with. With that said, I would much rather replace Hudler's 20 odd goals or so with a gritty 10 goal forward to fill out the 3rd or 4th line. The problem last year was not scoring goals. We scored more than enough goals. The problem was how many goals we allowed the opposition to score. With improved defensive, and an effective line out to wear down the opposition, we will be just fine. This is where the likes of Travis Moen or someone similar comes in. AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) The boards behind the net in Joe Louis are happy because they won't have as many pucks fired into them on power plays anymore. I liked the guy, but, man, did he miss the net a lot. And now they will have to find another pretend tough guy! Edited July 3, 2009 by AtomicPunk

Glubki 17 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 Does it make you feel big and strong to act mean in the internet? Samuelsson was a Red Wing and I can never hate a Red Wing. Does that include Uwe Krupp?

MidMichSteve 1,115 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) I don't think there was any Red Wing that had more profanities thrown their way from this forum. We never had to yell "Shoot the f****** puck" though. When I think of Sammy I recall the first two goals scored in game 1 against the Pens last year. That wraparound was amazing! Best of luck to him. A.T.Hun 0 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 Sammy scored some big goals, but it's not like he is irreplaceable. If the $2.5 per figure is correct, there's no way Kenny should have/could have matched it. This is in keeping with his strategy: identify your core players (Zetts, Datsyuk, Lids, Mule) and build around them.
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 Does that include Uwe Krupp? For me to hate I need a proper reason. No hockey player has ever done anything to me. Samuelsson I like. I think he was a very good third liner with a minimal salary and some great top-corner goals. He wasn't that bad on the powerplay either. Claiming so is just a stupid habit in LGW. He was no Rafalski, but do you think that Stuart or Ericsson have his offensive skills? Sure he missed the goal at times with his shot or shot straight at the goalie. He had a hard shot and was told to shoot often by coaches. He was better shooter than a stick handler or passer so why not? It's not like Zetterberg or Datsyuk never miss the goal or shoot at the goalie.
wingnut40 176 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 He was clutch when he needed to be, even though he made some dumb mistakes. I'm really gonna miss him, but wish him luck in Vancouver.

rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 Sammy had some CLUTCH moments as a Wing. 1. 2 goal game vs San Jose, Game 6, 2007 WCSF 2. 2 goal game vs Pitts, Game 1, 2008 SCF 3. OT winner this year vs Hawks Lang was clutch too, but was easily replaced. Either way, best of luck Sammy, thanks for the memories.

It will be hard/impossible to find a player to contribute as much at the salary he was paid. I've disliked the way a lot of Wings have played in the past but the only one who I wouldn't shake hands with is Krupp.

Hank Dats 'N Homer 81 Report post Posted July 3, 2009 (edited) i would have resigned Sammy in heart beat....at 1.2 million, especially after losing Hossa, but 2.5 million for a guy who has never done ANYTHING outside of Detroit is just a ridiculous contract. Hes only put up numbers while in a wings uniform. Only had 1 20 goal campaign, and that of course was in a wings jersey. I just dont know how well this guy is going to play outside of the wings orginization. He seems to be a product of our system like many have already said. He does have value with the fact that hes a right handed shot that can play the point on the power play, and we all know he has a decent shot when hes not aiming directly for the goalies chest. I just dont know how well he will perform in Vancouver. I wish him the best of luck. I was not a Sammy fan by any means, but i was content with his play most of the time. Lots of turnovers, but ALOT of timley goals especially in the playoffs. Good luck sammy, hope it all works out, glad you got paid and lucky for you, you get to play some swedes still. Thanks and good luck. Edited July 3, 2009 by Hank Dats 'N Homer

Damn, if those stats are right, he definetly was a product of our system. The only thing i could see in his favor is the fact that Vancouver management and coaching staff has been watching how the wings play sammy for the past 5 years. If they are smart they will use him on the 2nd and 3rd line and put him on the 2nd PP line just like the Wings did. Then again, he doesnt really have the staff playingwith him that he had here in Detroit so it might not work out or him. With that said, i hope he has a few 20 goal campaigns and scores some timely goals in the playoffs just like he did here....as long as they arent against the wings. The bad thing is, Sammy seems like one of those players who will play BEST against his former team, so we might see him burn us once or twice over the next 3 years...
