Assuming the 5% pay raise for Leino is correct, Hudler could conceivably get $2.9 mil..... and that is also assuming Lilja starts the season on LTIR.... Wings obviously are not going to be able to trade a player with a head injury. Although, at the start of the season the Wings must be cap compliant. Lilja on LTIR does NOT give them cap space ..... it gives them cap RELIEF. I don't know if cap RELIEF at the START of the year can make them cap compliant.... if it can then someone would have to be traded once Lilja comes off LTIR.

Hudler, Jiri $2,900,000

Datsyuk, Pavel $6,700,000

Darren Helm $599,444

Cleary, Dan $2,800,000

Zetterberg, Henrik $6,080,000

Holmstrom, Tomas $2,250,000

Draper, Kris $1,583,333

Abdelkader, Justin $740,000

Maltby, Kirk $883,333

Franzen, Johan $3,950,000

Leino, Ville $920,000

Filppula, Val $3,000,000

Lidstrom, Nicklas $7,450,000

Rafalski, Brian $6,000,000

Stuart, Brad $3,750,000

Kronwall, Niklas $3,000,000

Ericsson, J $900,000

Lilja, Andreas LTIR

Meech, Derek $483,333

Lebda, Brett $650,000

Osgood, Chris $1,416,667

Howard,Jimmy $716,667

TOTAL is $56,772,777.00 without Lilja's salary. Frankly, I think the Wings will trade Hudler..... and get someone like Moen or Malhotra or Bonk.

If I were Kenny this is how i would go about the offseason.

1. Re-Sign Leino

2. Try and convince Hudler to stay for 2.5 million. He has said he'd stay for less. If he wants to try and get 3-3.5 in arbitration, then why would you even say that sh!t and good bye.

3. Trade Lilja (He's grown on me but business decsion)

4. Buyout Holmstroms contract. It's the obvious move. It would save us 1.5 million towards the cap. However in reality, once again, our loyalty towards useless aging veterans will probably cost us a 25 year old, 70 point scorer.

This roster gives us 21 players with 1.2 million in cap space, which gives us Hudler and a little room to maneuver at the deadline.

Pavel Datsyuk $6,700,000

Henrik Zetterberg $6,083,333

Johan Franzen $3,954,545

Valtteri Filppula $3,000,000

Daniel Cleary $2,800,000

* Jiri Hudler $2,500,000

Kris Draper $1,583,333

* Ville Leino $950,000

Kirk Maltby $883,333

Justin Abdelkader $850,000

* Holmstrom Buyout $750,000

Darren Helm $599,444

* Aaron Downey $500,000

DEFENSEMEN

Nicklas Lidstrom $7,450,000

Brian Rafalaski $6,000,000

Brad Stuart $3,750,000

Niklas Kronwall $3,000,000

Jonathan Ericsson $900,000

Brett Lebda $650,000

Derek Meech $483,333

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood $1,416,666

Jimmy Howard $716,666

ROSTER SIZE 22

SALARY CAP $56,800,000

PAYROLL $55,520,653

BONUS MONEY (ESTIMATED) (0.2% of cap) $110,000

CAP ROOM $1,279,347

So why are we spending $1.25m on Aaron Downey when we have the extra million and then some to keep Homer around? Don't even think of telling me that Downey contributes even a fraction of what Homer does, even as old as Homer is. This is just ridiculous.

When you figure out where you saw Downey making 1.25, then you let me know.

I think this site should be moved to www.STUARTHASANOTRADECLAUSE.com, and www.letsgowings.com should redirect people to the new site.

Stuart might be convinced to waive the NTC to head back to California. I hear LA has plenty of cap space.

The point being that we've been concentrating on the prospect of trading a lower tier defenseman, when trading a higher level player makes more sense "cap-wise".

All-in-all, I trust Kenny to do what's best for the team, but the speculation is fun.....

I see your point, but I don't see it happening. Kenny isn't the type to send the message that the Wings don't honor NTCs with no questions asked. I think you're going to see a whole lot less of them being handed out, as many GM's are finding their hands tied by them in the new cap world. The Zetterbergs and Datsyuks of the world deserve their NTCs, but outside of that, I don't think many people should have them.

I think your calculations include Abby's 850k so if we signed hudler to say 2.5 million a year along with your above Leino salary of 850k we would just send Abby down and things would be okay. When I imput that scenario we have 2000 dollars left in cap space. Holland has already said that we are going to trade a defencemen so when that happens we will be able to sign a 4th line player like Downey who makes 500k.

Prove it.

Downey's salary plus Homer's buyout cap hit.

Given the fact that there's still plenty of cap room after that if you don't buy Homer out and replace him with Downey, it's clear you did that because you prefer Downey to Homer. So, my question remains; why pay Downey $1.25m?

Alright, I get how your thinking but you're missing the big picture.

A. I think a lot of people throw Downey into scenerios just because he makes .500, and thats exactly what I did. No matter how the offseason plays out we will probably need to add one or two players for the league minimum to fill out a complete roster. Whether it be Downey or someone else, I dont really care.

B. The Homer buyout saves 1.5 million towards the cap. Under the scenerio I gave we would be 1.2 million under going into the season, which is necessary because we would have flexibility to add a player or two or even three at the deadline. If we didnt buy-out Homer, we would have absolutely no flexibility whatsoever.

I'm not objecting to buying out Homer; it was the fact that it was buying out Homer to put Downey on the roster. Buying Homer out might be the best way to cut the cap hit.

Oulahen? McGrath? Either of thse two would be a nice fit if you needed someone to fill a final forward spot after buying Homer out.

Or, and I don't recall if this is allowed under the CBA, buy Homer out and then re-sign him at $500k, for a total cap hit of $1.25k for Homer after the buyout.

ahhh the beauty of a salary cap. we have easily the best front office in the sport. we take time and develope our draft picks, we dont go throwing out this wild contracts, in fact every big name on this team is underpaid, we have players that said publicly they wanted to stay here yet we still couldnt afford them, and now were probably going to lose our RFAs too. and why? because OTHER gms and teams dont know how to run a franchise or increase revenue. this makes no sense. why was there a lockout? and how is this CBA better than the last one?

If the lockout hadn't happened, the top-end players would be getting in the area of $15 million (or more) per year.

haha i was gonna write stuart has the ntc in all caps until i saw that you put this, nicely done it gave me a chuckle. I don't think the wings will ask stuart to waive either, UNLESS the only way i can see it is if the wings get an offer for him that benefits both parties. like going to LA (that is if stuart wants to get back to cali). But i'm all for dumping lilja and i agree homer looked really poor in the playoffs, i say give him up to the deadline and if he hasn't done well TRY and move him

The Wings currently have just under $2.5m in cap space free. What this means is: trade or waive Lilja, and the Wings can afford to sign Leino for ~$1m and Hudler for ~$2.5m with about $265k in cap space free. Anything more expensive, and they have to make more room or give up one or both of Leino and Hudler. Edited by eva unit zero

Well then we agree. I wouldnt be for buying out Homer just to put Downey on the roster. Im for buying out homer for capspace.

Yup, Lilja is done as a Wing, it's near certain. Neither Meech nor Lebda make enough cash to be worth moving. One thing I'd like to mention about this: Lebda improved by leaps and bounds last year. He went from a 7th, to a solid 6th, 5th on a good day. I don't have a problem with him being in the lineup full time.

Remember that it's okay to be over the cap before opening day. It is likely that Hudler will be signed before Lilja is moved.

Hudler will be resigned, mark my words. It's more than a money issue, at this point. The Wings run the risk of losing their style of play, if they let another one go.

I'm a bit scared though, about who our 20th man will be. After Hudler signs, we need one more forward. I'd hate to see Abdelkader's development harmed, by him playing 3 minutes / night in the bigs. I'd much rather see him having at least another half season of first line duty in the A.

I agree. Im just hoping Hudler will agree to 2.5 million so we have enough left over to fill out our roster, and keep Leino.

First off if you buy a contract out you can't resign the player you bought out...

Trade Meech has no cap benefit, $483,000 cap hit is about as low as a cap hit could be, so if he is traded you actually have to free up some room for a replacement #7 blueliner...

Lebda makes about 1/2 what Lilja makes as comparable players... If you need cap room once again Lebda at 650k doesn't really free any up...

So that leaves Homer at 2.25 vs Hudler at what he signs for... I think the point being made is that 1 of these 2 might have to be moved... Flip, Mule are almost as untouchable Zetts and Datsyuk... Honestly looks like Holland wants to keep Hudler and someone else has to go... I am not saying it is Homer, he just makes the most sens cap wise...
