Ville Leino signs a 2 year extension

Maltby has 4 rings and is a proven commodity. Just saying.

yes but he has been steadily declining for a number of years. leino is only likely to get better and better and given a full season and more minutes he is almost certain to be worth more than 800k in 2 years time.

there is no way a young player with his offensive potential is gonna sign a 4 or 5 year contract for peanuts.

Oh and I don't think he would have signed a 4 year deal at that number, that likely would have been one year and eventually leading up to around 1.6.

I don't think his rookie year he deserves more than Malts.

I am skeptical of this source, not that the wings have signed him but the value, I wouldn't be surprised if it is 1.6 a year!

That's what my husband said, but you think he would be signed for $1.6 for 2yrs when Huds was only making $1.015..if that's the case I can totally understand why he would file for arbitration.....

Still looking for confirmation....!

No I don't but that is the more than likely correct part of that deal, or maybe the years, but I don't think that contract is legal at that value? I am pretty sure he was due a mandatory raise?

ROSTER SIZE 21

SALARY CAP $56,800,000

TOTALS $55,120,653 $

CAP SPACE $1,679,347

Leino on roster (but shaded, not in bold such as everyone else including Abby)

but if $1.6 is cap space.....how is that enough for Huds & another??? and then that would make 23 b/c Abby is on there.....

confused??? me too!

Don't know if this helps. But it's for everybody.

It's safe to think of rosters that don't include Abby. If they could, they'd rather have him play another year in GR. Plus, Kenny already said that he plans to trade one defenseman. There's a whole lot of factors going into how much cap space the Wings have.

He actually makes 50K less than Chelios guys... think about it :P

This is great.

Maybe he agreed to make "only" 800k if he got promised to stay on the team and not being sent down to GR

Grey cap hit indicates estimation.

Doesn't make sense. I can tell you right now, we have a bit more 3 mil in cap space, 3.5 tops.

I'll take that source, but how did they get away without giving him a raise.....does the CBA have waivers for players to sign in case of a contract deal??? Does anyone have a website link for the CBA....I'd like to learn more about it! Thanks!

And so is a legal roster 22 or 23???

I'm still learning the "technicalities" of the game...the "off the ice" portion of the NHL...so sorry if my questions are silly!

As previous articles have mentioned, Holland might have informed both Leino and Huds of the cap situation and guaranteed a longer contract and higher payout in the long run to take a cut now.

Oh yeah, I completely understand that, I'm one to have mentioned the idea as well....I was just wondering what the rules were for the mandatory raise and such because if it IS mandatory then he should get a little under $1.8M for the next two years....unless in contract there is something like....." if you take a cut now, in 10/11 your salary will be renegotiated for your due raise when we have more cap room to play with".......or something to that effect.......

I don't know, as I said before, I'm still learning, all your comments are greatly appreciated! My husband likes that I can ask you all instead of asking him every 5 minutes! :P

The CBA says that Leino's salary ($875 000) is in the range of RFA's whose qualifying offers need to be a 5% increase (so $919 000).... Maybe Holland didn't qualify him and just re-signed him as a UFA ???

In any event, great deal

I don't think so. It was reported on MLive that he was sent a qualifying offer.

Holland did make qualifying offers to restricted free agents Jiri Hudler and Ville Leino.

Had Leino gone UFA he would have been gone from Detroit. I guarantee you there are teams out there with the cap space to pay Leino more than the Wings would have.

For those of you wondering why his salary is only 800K instead of the 850K or more, it's because when you're on a 2 way contract like he was last season, he wasn't getting paid 850K while in the minors. He gets his AHL salary, then when he's called up, he's put on the 850K salary paid out normally. And don't forget, players don't get paid in the playoffs. He was essentially getting paid his AHL contract all last season except for like 4 weeks of the season when he saw a big bump up to his 850K salary.

Now that he'll be on the roster full time, he'll be getting at least double what he made last year, all through out the season, which he should be very happy about.

Red Wings sign Ville Leino to two-year deal

by Ansar Khan

Monday July 06, 2009, 2:33 PM

The Red Wings have signed forward Ville Leino to a two-year contract worth $800,000 a season.

The club is counting on the skilled Finnish forward to help compensate for some of the offense it lost with the departures of Marian Hossa and Mikael Samuelsson.

Leino, 25, had five goals and four assists in 13 games for Detroit during the regular season. He spent most of the season in Grand Rapids due to a lack of salary-cap space.

"We like his hockey sense, his ability to protect the puck in the offensive zone,'' general manager Ken Holland said. "He's got a scoring touch and he goes to the hard areas.

"He just needs to adjust to the pace of the game.''

Leino's contract is a one-way deal, meaning he'll get paid that amount whether he is in the NHL or the AHL. But the Wings have no intention of sending him to Grand Rapids. He is their 10th forward signed to a one-way deal. They need at least two more and they don't have much cap space -- roughly $2.5 to $3 million.

Holland is continuing talks with left wing Jiri Hudler, saying that he is not close to a deal. But he is hoping to avoid an arbitration hearing, the date for which should be set within the next couple of days.

Exactly, money wasn't important. The one-way deal was. Like Ville said all along.

Wow! I'm pretty impressed Holland managed to get the cap hit down below the one year minimum salary for Leino. Under the CBA he had to get a 5% raise above his salary the year before (making the minimum just under $920,000), so Holland must've set it up so he gets less in year 2 to make the average cap hit 800k. That or the CBA rule I'm thinking of doesn't apply to Leino because he didn't play a rookie season yet (he'd have to go over 25 games, and only hit 13 last year).

The CBA says that Leino's salary ($875 000) is in the range of RFA's whose qualifying offers need to be a 5% increase (so $919 000).... Maybe Holland didn't qualify him and just re-signed him as a UFA ???

Nope, both he and Hudler received the standard qualifying offers a few weeks ago.
