Chris Chelios retired. We knew that he would retire, it was time."
REDHASEK 0 Report post Posted July 24, 2009 (edited) f*** all of you haters. You could have said the same thing about Yzerman if you think about it. Quite a disrespectful bunch here. I'm glad he's not on the roster, either, but I certainly don't think he's done, and I wish him the very best... in the East. Steve Yzerman is a God Compared to Cheli......Yzerman know when to hang them up........Cheli....doesn't....Cheil has to realize....that the Game is meant for guys like him anymore... Yzerman would probably have played longer if not for the eye injury. He could have very well still been on the roster. Thats not a testament to his ability but more to the loyalty of the franchise. egroen 384 Report post Posted July 25, 2009 I don't like Chris Chelios. Never have. I don't deny his tallent, and most of me thinks he's the best Defenceman I've ever seen play. Yes, better than Lidstrom. Not at his peak for as long as Lidstrom, but when Cheli was at his peak, I think he was better. The only thing holding me back from saying with certainty that Cheli was better than Lids ever was is Cheli's penchant for 2 minute minors, sometimes at inoportune times. Otherwise, he could scor e like Lids, he could position himself like Lids, and he could hit without putting himself out of position like Lids can't. There's a part of me that says "Cheli - if you had retired 5 or even 10 years ago, people would be mentioning your name with Orr's." That said, there's also a part of me that admires him for saying pretty much "screw my legacy, screw loyalty to any given team, screw money, screw everything and everybody, I just want to play hockey as long as I can and that's what I'm going to do." That's cool. Decent points, but I wouldn't go that far... Chelios will be underrated by the younger crowd for quite a while because they associate him with the player he is now, but he'll ultimately be remembered as a top 10 defensemen of all-time, the greatest American born player ever and easily amongst the strongest of defenders in their own zone, but still make a hell of a difference offensively. Not like Orr though.
egroen 384 Report post Posted July 25, 2009 And that, my friends, sums up Chris Chelios and why I like him. He's playing for the love of the game. And why he should be the Masterton Trophy winner every year until he finally retires.

And who are we to tell people that they should stop doing what they want to do? Chelios now is obviously not the same as he was in his 20s or 30s but if HE feels that HE can still be effective in whatever capacity now and another club thinks HE can be as well, more power to him. I'd like to see him do it.
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted July 27, 2009 I don't doubt he can do it. He'd be excellent veteran presence to a young team and I'd be suprised if he didn't wind up as a defensive coach when he finally does call it quits.

I would love to see Cheli as a D coach somewhere... after he's done playing of course. I'm happy that we're not done talking about him yet.

Not like Orr though. No way I'd put Chelios over Lidstrom or Orr. Anyone who thinks Chelios was ever better than Lidstrom is likely not seeing the subtle perfection of Lidstrom. Chelios was flashier than Lidstrom. Lidstrom was better. There's no shame in that. The only guy I'd put over Lidstrom is Orr.

I'd prefer to see Chelios working within the Wings organization somewhere. His commitment, passion and dedication to his physical training is an example every one of the young prospects in the system should have a chance to emulate. Chelios may be done as an impact hockey player, but I don't think he has to be done making an impact in the game of hockey.
