bonan78 1 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 (edited) This topic was being debated on all of the ESPN shows this morning. Scotty needs to be ahead of everyone on this list except John Wooden. What that man did in college sports, where you are guaranteed to have a player for no more than 4 years, to have had the dynasty he built and the championship run spanning over 2 decades (10 in 12 years from '64 to '75), that will never be done again. That being said, Scotty did something no other coach has ever done: he has won championships with 3 different teams (MTL, PIT, and DET), and he won multiple championships with each team. That puts him ahead of Lombardi (5 championships), Bryant (6 championships), Shula (2 championships), tied with Auerbach (9 championships), and one behind Phil Jackson, who won his 10th this year. I still say he's better coach than Phil, who rode his superstars to glory, unlike Scotty who had a system that he pounded into the heads of his star players and got more out of his role players than anyone else could. I demand a recount!! Edited July 30, 2009 by bonan78

QFT Though if they are going to throw out college coaches, they might want to look into Jim Steen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Steen Steen's teams have won more NCAA championships than any other team in any division or any sport. The Lords have won 30 consecutive NCAA Division III championships (record in all of sports), the first having been in 1980, while the Ladies have won 23 (nonconsecutive) titles. In his 30 years at Kenyon, Coach Steen has developed over 150 NCAA champions and over 300 All-Americans. He has coached several Olympic Trial qualifiers, Division I All-Americans, and been voted NCAA Division III Coach-of-the-year twelve times. He has also produced more post-graduate scholars than any other coach in any division, and places high importance on students' academic performance as well as athletic success. Guest ZetterbergFourty Report post Posted July 30, 2009 He is undoubtably the best hockey coach of all-time. As far as this list goes, he def. needs to be bumped up about 4 spaces into the top 3. He has won 9 championships as a coach with 3 different teams. The Canadiens (1973, 1976, 1977, 1978, and 1979), The Penguins (1992) and The Red Wings (1997, 1998, and 2002). As we all know, the Stanley Cup is the hardest pro sports trophy to win. He's awesome.
xtrememachine1 795 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 Not only has Scotty coached three separate teams to championships, he's built some of the greatest teams in the history of his sport. No other coach in sports can claim that.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 30, 2009 I think the top ten of the list is pretty close to accurate. Wooden is definitely the easy choice for number one. My only minor complaints would be I think Bowman and Rockne should be a little higher in the top ten.

T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Good points, all of you. But it doesn't matter a whit. Hockey isn't important enough to the people who made this list. Yep, just another case of hockey getting the short end of the stick....
jollymania 162 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Bowman is easily #1, aalthough college is kind of impressive cause the kids are all young.
jollymania 162 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 also its much harder to coach hockey or football (granted its a s*** sport) than basketball, and i think a guy like lombardi's on there for his personality and iconic nature
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Is...is it bad that I have no idea who that Wooden guy is? I'm at least somewhat familiar with all the other names on the list, even if just having heard them at some point in time (except for Shula).
Manoir 70 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 What has always hurt Bowman is his stint in Buffalo. Some people are of the belief that Bowman was lucky to be coach of very talented teams and the one place where he coached that was not a powerhouse he couldn't lead them to success. That may have been a reason for not being ranked higher.

I'm at least somewhat familiar with all the other names on the list, even if just having heard them at some point in time (except for Shula). Dude, he coached UCLA basketball to an insane amount of consecutive champtionships and consecutive wins. He's 1 or 2, no doubt.
BigWillieStyle 662 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Considering the source, I'm surprised that they even included a hockey coach. Or for that matter even know that there is a sport called hockey. Notice that you have to go all the way down to #37 to find Toe Blake, the next hockey coach they chose to include. And not a single college hockey coach? What a joke. Oh yeah, I forgot, look at the source.
BigWillieStyle 662 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Is...is it bad that I have no idea who that Wooden guy is? Yes it is. Unless you are younger than 10, lived a VERY sheltered life, Or are a true hockey fan and don't realize that there are other sports out there. Those would be the only exceptions that I can think of. He would probably be my #1 pick also, and I'm not much of a basketball fan. The sport is just too Canadian, and I never got into Canadian sports.
Nev 1,085 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 Typically narrow minded American list - because we all know team sports aren't played outside of North America, right? How about Sir Alex Ferguson or Fabio Capello?
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted July 31, 2009 I never cease to be amazed at how big college sports is in the US.. 2 college coaches in the top 3? And I agree with Nev. But the list is obviously North-American sports/coaches only.

I must fall under the "very sheltered/true hockey fan" then, because I'm almost 30. I've never paid any attention to college sports at all though, so that's likely why. bonan78 1 Report post Posted August 1, 2009 Here is the list of people that helped them creat that list Is it just me, or is Scotty the only hockey coach they picked to be on the list of "Experts", looks like half of the list is made up of football coaches, and there are some pretty bad ones on there.
