Brodeur has sucked in the playoffs ever since the Devils won their last cup in 2003. He's been outplayed by Ray Emery and Cam Ward, and was taken off his game by Sean Avery of all people.

Doesn't that sound like an overrated performer?

A Cup-winning goalie, by default, has a 1/3 chance of winning the Conn Smythe.

In Brodeur's three wins, he lost the Conn Smythe to Scott Stevens, Claude Lemieux and the losing goaltender.

Ouch.

Unbelievably overrated goalie... many believe him to be the best ever.

I don't. I'd easily put Tretiak and Roy ahead of him.

This is the era of the goalie in the NHL as far as I'm concerned. And like I said, Brodeur has done nothing in the playoffs in at least 5 years, while lesser goalies (Giguere, Kiprusoff, Roloson) have carried their teams to the Finals singlehandedly.

Look how he did compared to his backups this past year (they always do about as well as he does):

Brodeur: 19-9-3, 2.42, .916, 28.8 SA/60

Backups: 32-18-1, 2.40, .918, 29.3 SA/60

He's a very good goalie, but does not come close to approaching the top 5 ever, let alone the best.

When was the last time Nick pissed away our teams playoffs with horrible play in the clutch?

Yeah. That's what I thought.

Marty is a sham. Play on NJ long enough and you're bound to win a few cups. Nick on the other hand is about as close to perfect as it gets.

This isn't even close.

I think that poll needs to be ripped up and shredded to bits. Absolutely stupid.

Exactly. Cripes, finally someone sane.

I wouldn't even put Marty top 5. I'd well take Hasek(any era), Tretiak, Roy, Cujo and even Belfour(who are both stupidly underrated) before him.

He's a completely coddled product of the most defensive system ever and probably one of the most underrated offensive systems, too. did you know the 2003 Devils had a more productive offense than our beloved 2002 Wings?

So where is the guy from that thread the other day who was arguing that Jagr was the best player of the last decade?

I tried to talk some sense in him but he wouldn't hear any of it. Guess I'm not the only one who thinks both Brodeur and Lidstrom have been better in the last 10 years.

And of course I think Lidstrom deserves this honor. He's been way more consistant and he has dominated the position of defenseman more than Brodeur has dominated the goaltender position.

It should be an easy choice --

Lidstrom has 6 Norrises and a Conn Smythe while Brodeur has 4 Vezinas.

7 1st Team All-Star slections and a 2nd Team vs. 3 1st Team 2 2nd Team selections.

Lidstrom has also led defensemen in scoring, while being a defensive d-man first, more than Brodeur has led goalies in any category short of wins and games played (both are iron men). In the most teling individual stat for goalies, save percentage, Brodeur has only finished 3rd and 8th this decade.... that's it.

Lidstrom's game is underappreciated. Always has been. Plus he's European. Even if the truth is that he is a better player of the decade, there's no way the casual fan will see it.

This looks like it is one of those very rare times when the casual fan gets it right. Though he is still horribly overrated but it feels like a small few people start to realize this all the time.

Sadly once he retires and the media does nothing but sing his praises, all his negatives will be wiped away with history, and all his positives will get two coats of wax (not just one) ;)

For example....not many casual fans remember Patrick Roy completing s***ting the bed during his last few seasons in the playoffs.

OMG! Wings fans doing everything the can to slam Brodeur, including not only bumping him from discussion as the best ever, which most, if not all hockey pundits put him.....but now we're knocking him out of the top 5. What's next, he'll be bumped down to somewhere around 25th?

This is getting ******* stupid. Brodeur's a product of the system and yadda, yadda.

You know what, it could be argued that Nick Lidstrom has benefited from having played with more of the most elite players in the game for the past 20 years. It could be said that Nick has benefited by playing with more Hall of Famers and future Hall of Famers than any player in the world.

Quit being a bunch of ******* crybabies. Lidstrom is great and deserves to be considered in the discussion as the best dman ever. Brodeur is great and deserves to be considered in the discussion as the best goalie ever.

Comparing them is dumb IMO.

What's even dumber are people who think comparing them is dumb and then go on ripping Brodeur for everything.

Quit making ******* excuses for how Brodeur is overrated. How ******* old is he now? He's not going to be as good as he was in his prime so who the f*** cares how his backups did last year.

Here are the facts

Most Wins

2nd most regular season shutouts

Most combined shutouts

3 STANLEY Cups

4 Vezinas

Made the playoffs every year of his career but one

4 Jennings

10 time All Star

Rookie of the Year

Olympic Gold Medal

World Cup Champion

Most consecutive 30 and 35 win seasons

Most 40 win seasons

believe it or not, there are actually even more accolades but i'm tired of typing.

Lidstrom = great defenseman

Brodeur = great goalie

The fact that LGWers are so threatened by things like this they feel the need to tear down one of the greatest netminders ever = pathetic.

by the way, this rant isn't merely directed at you Egroen, but to everybody (and they know who they are).....but seriously, you're way too bright to be pulling this bulls***.

Congratulations. That is quite the list of accomplishments.

Now does it make him the greatest goalie ever?

Does it make him better than Nicklas Lidstrom?

Does it make him even a top 5 goalie in the 100 year history of the NHL?

Did you even bother to compare Brodeur's accomplishments to some of the other greats, as well Lidstrom's?

Or do you just blow a gasket any time someone dares praise a Red Wing?

Lidstrom does not deserve to be in the discussion for best defenseman ever. That distinction belongs to Orr and Orr alone. Are you utterly retarded to suggest otherwise? Or just plain ignorant? Lidstrom might not even be the greatest Red Wing defenseman ever (though I believe he is), but you don't have a ******* clue about that either do you?

I'll be more than happy to get into this further, but I am going to bed. To be continued....

Well I figured one of you would be around sooner or later.

I highly suggest you check out brodeurisafraud.blogspot.com. It's one of the most informative blogs on the goalie position, which a lot of people reject but you'd be smart to take note. I really hope you're not one of his automatic defenders with a closed mind, not open to the fact Brodeur may be overrated.

Which is most certainly is. It shows how his play has been behind the system and under pressure, he's not nearly as good as most think. Most of his accolades are highly team oriented.
