If Holmstrom resigned for $1M, we retain one of Williams/Bertuzzi for even a mild increase to $1.7 and then we pay Helm and Abdelkader 800k each we'd be left with $11.75M to resign Lidstrom, two more forwards and lose whatever cap space is to be lost with the decrease in the cap.

not sure if that's sarcasm or not but I wasnt saying that guarenteed Eaves would be on the roster beyond this year. I'm just saying that as an RFA Detroit coudl retain his rights, put him in GR, or trade him away. I doubt they'd walk away from him even if he doesnt work out at all on the NHL roster

It wasn't sarcasm. I honestly didn't know he will be an RFA after this year. Good move by Holland. If he ends up developing back into his former self and some other team swoops in and invests in him, at least the Wings will be compensated for their work on him in draft picks.

No way Helm costs 1.5M. 1M is more realistic for him, but I wouldn't be surprised if Holland got him for 900k.

I agree. I was using the OP's numbers.

Lucic and Keith would never, ever get traded at the deadline-- their parent clubs aren't sellers.

I'm just dreaming, I know it won't happen. Notice how I was mentioning the possibility of a cap-free situation, which I think will happen within the next 10 years, but that's a different argument. Anyways, those estimates of 1.5 for Helm and Abby are just rough estimates, and its usually better to overestimate in those types of situations. It is likely that those two sign deals closer to 1 million than 1.5, but it still is within the realm of possibility.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Helm play on a regular basis, as well as Leino. Abby would be better off spending a full season in GR, but I'm sure we'll see him up a decent part of the season relieving injured players.

As for Holmstrom, I'm pretty sure this is his last year. I really can't see him coming back next year, but wouldn't be opposed to him coming back at all. My cousin lives close to him and was telling me that he occasionally sees him taking out the trash to the end of his driveway, and he tells me that Homer was struggling doing that. I'm not sure how much more punishment he can take and I'm gonna miss the guy once he's gone, as he's one of my favorite players. I'm sure most of it will depend on his health this upcoming season....hopefully he can stay relatively healthy.

One thing for sure is that he will be leading the NHL in goals at the end of the first week. He always seems to start the season with a bunch of goals...

Its no secret that the Wings have some wiggle room next season in regards to the cap, and its quite possible that the remnants of the 1990's Detroit Red Wings will be be only a memory. It's likely that Maltby and Holmstrom will be playing their last season in 09 and we could see a very different roster next season. Anyways, for some reason I can't help but wonder about the lineup to the 10-11 season, even though we haven't started the 09-10 season. I'm quite the patient fellow, eh? Anyways, I'd like to hear what you guys think about this...

FORWARDS

Pavel Datsyuk - $6,700,000

Henrik Zetterberg - $6,083,333

Johan Franzen - $3,954,545

Valtteri Filppula - $3,000,000

Daniel Cleary - $2,800,000

Kris Draper - $1,583,333

Ville Leino - $800,000

DEFENSEMEN

Brian Rafalski - $6,000,000

Brad Stuart - $3,750,000

Niklas Kronwall - $3,000,000

Jonathan Ericsson - $900,000

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood - $1,416,666

Jimmy Howard - $716,666

TOTALS

ROSTER SIZE 13

PAYROLL $40,704,543

Likely Re-signings:

+ Forwards

Darren Helm - Est. $1,500,000

Justin Abdelkader - Est. $1,500,000

+ Defense

Nick Lidstrom - Est. $5,000,000-$6,000,000

It's also possible that Homer and Maltby come back for another season, but I wouldn't bet on it. This is also assuming that Bert, Williams, and Eaves all bounce after their one year deals, which I think is likely.

So with 9 forwards signed (including Helm and Abdelkader) and 5 defenseman including Lidstrom.

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Cleary

Franzen-Filppula-?

Abdelkader-Helm-Leino

?-Draper-?

?

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Ericcson-?

?

Ozzie

Howard

Those are just sample lines, and I realize at this point its nothing but a crapshoot, but its somewhat realistic. Something I notice is the glare in our top 6. Not that it isn't strong, but it would be nice to add someone that is a pure goal scorer or someone of high caliber. Leino might be able to jump up to the 2nd line and be effective, but we won't know that for a bit. Also, our bottom line would need to be filled out. Abby might see some time here, but that would just open up slots in another line. We would also need to round out our defense...

Therefore I am looking at these possible additions:

FORWARDS

Player Age - Team - Pos - 09/10 Cap - 09/10 Salary

Kovalchuk, Ilya 27 ATL L UFA 6.400 7.500

Janssen, Cam 26 STL R RFA 0.550 0.550

DEFENSE

Player Age - Team - Pos - 09/10 Cap - 09/10 Salary

Coburn, Braydon 25 PHI D RFA 1.300 1.400

Letang, Kris 23 PIT D RFA 0.835 0.625

Quincey, Kyle 24 LAK D RFA 0.525 0.550

Thornton, Shawn 32 BOS R UFA 0.517 0.550

Some possibilities and there's some other FA's that I haven't included. A mix of top players and role players. Some of them aren't very realistic, but that was also said about Hossa. Lots of good names out there, and I would probably give my left nut to get Kovalchuck here, but I'm not sure we can offer what Atlanta would be wanting for him at the trade dealine... Should be interesting, and I'm sure Holland has been thinking about this for a long time...

I just hope that we go out and sign some big tough Canadian kids. I am sick and tired of all these soft figure skating Europeans.

Can we get Bertuzzi AND Joe Thorton? How bout Tootoo or Laraque? Is Grorge Parros available?

I would take Tootoo in a second, as well.

Frolov would be a great acquisition as well.

Defense and goaltending may be a priority at that time, however.

Nick will sign a 1-2 year deal before 2009 is up most likely. I think Holmstrom will retire after this year. While Draper won't go anywhere if there's no way to get rid of the cap hit, if they are able to get any relief by buying him out (I don't know the rules for it), I think they will do so and he will retire and Maltby will retire with him. If Draper fulfills the contract though, I think Maltby will sign on for 1 more year for whatever the league minimum is for a guy his age in order to finish with Draper. Realistically, Maltby's got a lot more left in his tank than Draper who in my mind has become almost completely useless. Maltby's not the guy he was in the 90's but he's more effective to have around than people give him credit for.

If the Wings have offensive holes still as the season goes on or if they just want to make a splash while dropping some cap space, look for Flip to be moved at the deadline for a bigger-named offensive rental. While this certainly won't happen if he is on pace for 60 points like some suggest, I think it's more likely that he'll float right around the 35-40 point pace at best and he may even drop points as he likely won't be racking up as many assists because we're most likely not going to be scoring as many goals this year as last. He's not a goal-scorer and he's certainly no Datsyuk, so again, if he only maintains the 35-40 pace or shows a decline in production, look for the Wings to move him. He'd give the most cap relief as well as bring the best return of any of our guys that have any potential of being moved which is why I think it could happen. The $3 million cap hit was a good-faith gesture hoping he would continue to improve, but I don't think we're going to see that.

Once the off-season hits, the fate of Eaves, Bertuzzi and Williams will depend on how this season goes. If Williams and Bertuzzi play well and will play for similar money, I could definitely see the Wings signing Bertuzzi up for another year and Williams for 2-3. If I had to guess though, I think Bert's most likely to sign another deal with us as he'll probably keep it cheap and it seems like he'd enjoy retiring as a Wing. It'd be a good end for him and I've got a feeling he'll win a lot of people over this year. It won't be the Bert of old, but for $1.5 million, he'll look like a bargain. He'll probably put up 10 or more points than Flip including scoring probably twice as many goals, again, at $1.5 million. And again, this is why I think Flip's days as a Wing may be numbered despite what many think or fantasize about.

Eaves is a wild-card. I'm actually most excited to watch him as I think he has a lot of potential to surprise people. He's got the skills and he's still just 25. Leino's 25 and this is going to be his rookie year. I think the Wings will do all they can to get Eaves thinking of this as another shot at a rookie year and another shot to prove himself now with more experience and a great supporting cast of players, coaches and management. If he flourishes, I'm sure the Wings will try to sign him to a deal of decent length and hopefully he'd sign for "Red Wing" money as he seems like a hockey-first guy from a hockey-first family. But maybe he wants a payday...

For all the other UFA's, I've got a funny feeling that we might see Paul Kariya become a Wing. He's making $6 million now but likely won't be getting that kind of money next go around as he's getting older and last season was a wash because of injury and the likelihood of the cap crunching contracts down a bit. Plus, he'd likely only sign here if he's looking to buy into the Wings dollar system. If the price was right, it'd be a good signing as the guy can still really put up points. Before the injury he was over a point per game pace, I think 15 points in 10 or 11 games. He just seems like a guy the Wings would go for. I've always thought that he'd sign with the Wings at some point in his career, but we'll see. St. Louis is a real up and coming organization and they'll only be better if Kariya stays healthy.

Other than that, who knows. I think Kariya would be the only bigger name we'd be likely to get or go after. We love our veterans...

Major turbo out there long-shot: Hossa dealt to Wings in off-season to clear cap space. We could afford the $5.2 million hit after this year. Something crazy is going to go down in Chicago next summer and I don't see either Toews or Kane being the odd guy out. Not sure if Hossa has a no trade clause, but if he does, it gives him the power to say, "Detroit," and I have little doubt that the Wings wouldn't still be interested in his services. Hey, I didn't call it a major turbo out there long-shot for nothing...

Oh and I doubt Eaves leaves. He'll be an RFA and at worst I think he'd get resigned to a 500k deal. One year isn't always enough to fully turn it around. Look at Cleary's first year here

I'm extremely confident Eaves will have a successful season and be a Red Wing for a long, long time.
