hockey&beer 16 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 From THN 9. Sept: Derek Boogaard and Pavel Datsyuk are two intimidating players, but in very different ways. This summer, Boogaard was invited to not only take part in Datsyuk's hockey school in Russia, but also train with the gifted Red Wing. "Anytime you get to skate or even just be around a player of that caliber, you can't pass that up," Boogaard said. " You should have seen how he treated the kids. I was expecting a cockier guy, but Pav's a really good guy." Most of the kids didn't know who Boogaard was. "Once they started pulling up the YouTube clips, they got more intimidated," Boogaard laughed. "I can't wait to go back next summer. -So is Pav getting some tips from Boogey, you know, to toughen up those soft Euro hands? Actually I bring this up to re-enforce that fact that the Lady Byng can be something respected by everyone. Boogaard has his place in the league and everyone knows what that is, yet Pav seeks him oot to invite him to his personal camp which seems the anti-thesis of his style. I think it's dumb. I do respect Pavel Datsyuk greatly - he has sick moves, he's probably among the top 5 offensive forwards in the league, and his deffense is amazing. I wonder if Boogie invited Pavel help teach at the fight camp he put on with his brother.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 yeah, gentlemanly play has no place in professional sports. they should award those who scrum after whistles and face-wash, you know, REAL hockey players. Oh the irony.
GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 Pavel should have convinced Holland to trade for him. Boogaard wearing a Wings jersey. I wonder how that would look?

Guest micah Report post Posted September 16, 2009 yeah, gentlemanly play has no place in professional sports. they should award those who scrum after whistles and face-wash, you know, REAL hockey players. you're an idiot. There seems to be some sort of disconnect here, I have never promoted scrums or fcewashes. Sorry to burn down your strawman. Also, I posted that I think an award is dumb, and you react by insulting me personally. Not very "gentlemanly". You make good men like Pavel sad:(

GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 (edited) Who thinks this will turn into an enforcer thread? I do. The way I look at it, Datsyuk clearly wants Boogaard to join this team, which is why he invited him to camp. Why else would he invite a guy he didn't even know who he has nothing in common with? Datsyuk understands the need that this team has for a tough guy in the lineup, so what does he do about it? He invites the best enforcer in the league to his camp. Marvelous. There's more to this invitation than meets the eye folks. Boogaard will wear that number 24 in Detroit soon, much like Probert did decades earlier. Also, I posted that I think an award is dumb, and you react by insulting me personally. Not very "gentlemanly". You make good men like Pavel sad:( Nice reference! But to only include one premise to your conclusion, there are assumptions that need to be made as to why you think the award is dumb. You say you don't respect the award, but don't give a reason why. So one assumption is that you don't agree with hockey players that play within the rules and are non-aggressive. As invalid as that assumption may be, you did leave yourself open. Personally, I like the award, because i feel if your play is of high caliber, and you do so without taking many penalties, it shows a sense of personal responsibility that is not seen very often in this sport. Go Wings!

Much better explanation is that he wants to show to those kids that there is another side of the hockey and Boodard is one of the best at that.

skacore 2 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 Datsyuk knows it will be a year with no protection or respect from his opponents so he's going to befriend every tough guy in the league on a personal level, 1 by 1. Good thinking.

Kira 451 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 Interesting invite. And two points for the record...one, Pasha doesn't have a cocky bone in his body...never has had one. Two, with all due respect, micah, maybe Derek needs to pound some sense into your head. The Lady Byng is one of the oldest and most respected awards given in the league. Winning it is an honor, nothing to be ashamed of. Pasha is in some pretty good company on the list of previous winners. Read your NHL history and you might learn something. But if he acknowledges that there is some value in a gentlemanly style of play then it will skew his whole worldview that life is a zero-sum game and you can either hit or get hit. Good thinking. Ding ding ding! Pavel's no dummy. Ironically, also invited to the summer camp were, Georges Laraque, Eric Godard, Mitch Fritz, and Cam Janssen. Skacore, we did too get protection for Pavel! We signed Eaves, duhhhh.... Tonight against Philly may be a rough day for the Wings, keep their heads up. uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted September 16, 2009 Why would he worry about guys that will never be on the ice when he is? Detroit 5-0 up in the 3rd with 10 minutes to go. Then there is every chance one of those guys will be out on the ice at the same time as Dats. Times like that, the powerplay doesnt work as en enforcer. (Not making this an enforcer debate, anyone but Heaton who replies to this I'll ignore)
