Why do players still go to KHL

Have any of you guys ever been to Russia?

Seems like you've heard too many stories about the danger of living there. Detroit is more dangerous than any city in Russia that I know of.

That's what it's like to be on only one side of propaganda.

With all these generalisations it seems like in NA it's tough inside the rink and soft outside the rink while in Russia it's the other way round.

I had several good acquaintances of mine try to set up vineyard/winery operations in Russia a few years ago. First, every person at every level of every governmental or quasi-govermental organization they encountered required bribes every time they were encountered. Secondly, every contract they made with Russians was in no way ever honored, only used as a blueprint to extort a better next-generation contract, ad infinitum. Business contracts and property rights were in no way enforced or respected, only used to extort more bribes and ever more contracts favorable to the Russkies. Equipment and labor purchases were not provided as they were held up by individuals requiring bribes before passed on to other individuals requiring bribes. After several dedicated years of trying to legally set up vineyards/wineries (Russia has the potential for some excellent, world-class wine production, all of which is unrealized) they abandoned the project several hundreds of thousands of dollars poorer and with a substantial distaste for all things Russian. My impression as an observer was that the Russians have no historical will to engage in legitimate business, and any money sent or spent there is advancing the cause of Soviet corruption.

Good luck playing hockey for a living there...

That was your choice... Is there a chain around your ankle?

Public Universities do wonders also.

That is until Nov '08... now they're flooded w/ no money to accept.

Many have closed their doors to new students.

It's the same with everything, there's good and bad apples.

I'm not complaining. I'm just stating that 700 a credit hour is incredibly expensive no matter who you are.

Also there are very few public universities that are as accredited as the one I'm going to for my specific major.

In other words, just stuff it Nancy.

Unfortunately, for decades, most of the aspiring, creative entrepeneurs in Russia had nowhere to turn to than crime syndicates and the black market.

A successful, completely legite, russian friend of mine made a killing in russia as a young man by running an 'illegal' passport scam.

Not personally, but I have been studying Russian history my college life from 11th century of Russian History to the modernization of Russia. Couple that with studying the language I would say I have an above average understanding of Russia and it's history from the Serfs to the emancipation of the Nobels and to be honest, most of the stories shared in this thread are true as bribes to the nobelmen and Tsar of the past are quite apparent in modern Russia today. Just like racism is still alive in the US today because of our past, the past of Russia also haunts the present Russia.

Things are definitely different there, but it's not like you can't walk the streets without being afraid for your life.

It's a different world, but every country has their own quirks. Russia is better than most places, that's for sure.

It's like most countries, there are the safe parts, the corrupt parts, the deadly parts, the (fill in the blank) parts...When talking about how many countries there are in the world, as a whole, Russia is definately one of the better places, but in reality, that's not really saying much. I know I may seem I'm bias, but I plan on living in Russia in the next half decade or so.

What propaganda? I base what I know of going to Russia to make money on the experiences of colleagues who have gone to Russia in hopes of making money. They aren't exactly chest-thumping United states nationalists. What I know of foreigners coming to the States to sell their expertise is based off the expiriences of those I know who have come here to do so, mostly from India and China. Only one group complains of extortion and veiled threats, and it isn't the group that's coming to the states to work.
