toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I don't think this guy gets nearly enough credit. I think people need to start acknowledging that part of Ovechkin's production can be attributed to this guy, sure it may be more the other way around, but there is no doubt Ovechkin benefits from this guy. Anyone that watches that team play knows how good this guy is. All the talk I've heard so far this year is how Ovechkin has been tearing it up and is on pace for 300pts or something.....haven't heard a peep about Backstrom.....guess what, he's the leading scorer on that team right now. It won't end up that way, but that doesn't mean he's not a special player as well.
Carman 387 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Him and Semin are great players and very underrated at least last season. Ovechkin is the main guy certainly, but they are about as good complimentary players as you can get. They might be the most talented line in a long long time. hankzet40 233 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Semin may be good but he will always be remembered more for his percussion skills.
hak 21 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Agreed.. 10 points in 4 games so far. 2 goals tonight while ovechkin were held pointless I think he will reach 95+ points this season
The Mule 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I selected Backs 4th overall in my hockey pool last month. Needless to say, thus far, I am pleased with my decision. If it ain't us, I sure as s*** wouldn't mind seeing the Caps hoist the Cup this season.
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I stole Semin late in my fantasy draft. He's tearing it up for me.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Surprisingly he was a sleeper on my fantasy team. He is proving to be a real winner, however I think centering Ovechkin is a big part of him doing so well.

That seems to be the consensus, but he managed to score twice tonight without any help from Ovechkin, so I'm beginning to believe otherwise.

AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Playing on #8's line might give him just a little more room since defenses watch Ovechkin so much. Just sayin'. But yes, I like them all very much.
dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 (edited) When he was first hailed as "The Next Forsberg" in swedish media I was laughing. I saw a talented kid who didn't have the physical strenght or speed to really become a star in the NHL. He's still not as complete a player as Forsberg was, but he's taken some giant leaps during his short time in the NHL. What I'm most impressed by is that he never, ever seems to run out of time with the puck. He never looks stressed and never needs to just throw away a puck. He's amazing at creating time and space for himself, which is why he's done so well without having blazing speed or being a very physical guy (though he's improving in both those regards). He might actually be the best playmaker in the league. I know people are going to disagree with me on that, but he's definitely up there. And his defensive play is coming along. Compared to Ovechkin and Semin he is in another league in that regard. All he needs to do is develop more of a scoring touch and he could win the Art Ross. I don't think he will ever be as good as forsberg because I don't think he has nor will learn the physical grit/nastiness which forsberg had. He will never be able to run through opponents with pure force and determination like forsberg. I wouldnt say he is the best playmaker in the league but I do think he is the perfect center for Ovechkin/semin and will have multiple 95+ seasons. His play style should minimize injuries too so he will probably have a long and healthy career

Doggy 130 Report post Posted October 10, 2009 Aftonbladet article, Ovie: "Most don't realise how good he is." Auto-translated: Ovechkin to Sportbladet about the secret of the NHL's hottest duo PHILADELPHIA. They were inspired when they went to the basketball together and saw how NBA stars were in the happy moments. So now even my friends are celebrating Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Bäckström each victory with a common hope - and a höftbump. - We have a lot of fun together. That is why it is so good for us, "explains" Ovie "when Sportbladet hits the NHL's two points kings. NHL season has not lasted more than a week and only three rounds are complete. But now it seems more or less assumed that the radar pair Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Bäckström towards a completely sensational year. Common sense of humor "Ovie" is number one in the scoring leaders with five goals and four assists - and "Bäckis" runner-up with eight assists. As if that were not enough, is the third link in Washington's super-chain, Alexander Semin, third with four goals and three assists. Explanation? Yes, as the Lord himself revealed the secret of the picture next door - the one on which his best friends do höftbump. The joy that can be seen there, the camaraderie and the common sense of humor in such a show-piece holds, is the very basic tenet of the Washington Capital's success in recent years. - It must be fun to perform and we have really, "says superstar Alexander Ovechkin and the lighthouses of its patented, semi-toothless grin and irresistible when we meet him in the dressing room before yesterday's 5-6-loss against sworn enemy Flyers in Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. "Like to socialize" - Our entire team is based on the idea. There are a lot of laughter and smiles here. But yes, I and "Nick" is perhaps the most fun. We thrive very well together, both when we play and when we do other things. The picture is confirmed by "Bäckis". - Yes, it's a great atmosphere throughout the team but just the two of us have been right near each other. We like to hang out and have a lot of common interests. Basketball, for example. And so it was during a NBA game at home in the Verizon Center, which also houses the Washington Wizards, the duo found their victory gesture. - We saw that some of the guys did the thing at times and thought it looked a bit cool out. So we took after. Though it is only when we win we do it, after the final whistle. "Löjlar us" When the coils are on the case forward - which of course is almost evenly - it becomes more public uproar. - Yes, when vetifan what we do. We just löjlar us, "said Nicky with a wry smile. Well, Washington's wild - and controversial - måljubel well just another manifestation of the fruit the same joy in the squad. - Fixed it doing so well now is that even if we begin to know each other very well on the ice, out "Bäckis". "Great Center" - We are in our chain has basically been playing together for three seasons now. This will take some things as well as of himself. Then they involved decently talented too, so to speak. It would, however, they do not talk so much about - unless you ask one of them comment on the other. Then they become all the more happy talk. - Oh, "said Ovechkin, and lit up again," Nick "was a good center is already past. Now he is a great centers. I do not think any really understood how good he is. And so may it continue. It is good when the opponents do not get it, ha ha. "Bäckis' description of" Ovie "is no less lyrical. - He can do incredible things. But we are on the team are not surprised anymore. We see him every day and know he is fantastic. The question is how long companion spirit, joy and talent lead. Screeners at the Stanley Cup It RUMOR some quarters already on the Caps are predestined to win the Stanley Cup this spring, - He he, it is perhaps to take in. One of the reasons we started so well this year is that we were tired of the slow start had the previous seasons. Last year we were just lazy. There we decided to change. Fixed ... yes, of course we are aiming to go as far as possible. We do not want it to end as early as last year, according to Backstrom. His Russian friends are on the same line. - I've been training extra hard this summer and put on me a few more pounds. And I have done to win. I'm hungry, "said Ovechkin. Maybe one of the Swedes can tidy up the translation a little.
