Gnredwing 10 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Lots of people including myself were upset when the Wings got Williams instead of other avaliable free agents. But he has looked very good so far in the 1st 3 games and has made some very nice moves handling the pucks, anyone agree??
The Mule 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Yes, I do. Williams has been great for us.
topsideplaya 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I like him and think he is a nice player. Offensively he is an upgrade over Sammy so that's a plus. If he has a nice year I wouldnt mind seeing him re-siged for another year or two. Having a player who can provide some offense with a right handed shot has been hard to come by for the Wings the last few seasons.
Trapt1307 81 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Never really understood why he was so hated before, never really stood out to me as a liability.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 He's looked more or less like what I expected. Not awful, but not really any kind of gambreaker out there.
Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Williams is better than Sammuelsson. Faster.
Statts 4 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I dont like him playing the point on the PP, but as astopsideplaya said, he is a right handed shot.
skyphoenix 153 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I dont mind him, but I didnt mind them getting him over the summer. He was pretty cheap and serves his purpose. Hes a pretty good role player.
clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 We'll see how things play out, but perhaps JW has matured as an NHL player. I suspect he was brought in as a "shooter" to replace Sammies role. The upside is that he probly can do more than hit the goalies chest, and will make some plays in the offensive zone. The downside may be his neutral zone and defensive zone play. We all know he rocks in shoot-outs.

We all know he rocks in shoot-outs. And he rocks on the penalty kill. How many shorties did he get against us? He has the speed to take that risk near the blueline and is almost a sure slam dunk on the shot.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 Typically with the case of a scapegoat player, the majority are going to overreact towards that athlete any chance they get, whether it's logical/illiogical, relevant or not, whatever. This is no exception either. Williams hasn't done anything overly extravagent IMO these first 3 games, but has done nothing even close for people to obnoxiously get on his case either. You need to call a spade a spade at some point, but it's hard to have these threads after such a small sample of games though. You could say the same thing about a majority of the players on the team right now, not being all that great but not terrible either.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 For me the biggest thing seems to be his attitude, both off the ice in things I've read and how he carries himself on the ice. I really believe he has matured as a player since his last tenure with the Wings. He seems more team oriented and as though he has bought into the system thus far. I remember kind of a snotty player that thought he was going to turn into a 100 pt player the last time JW was in Detroit and now I see a very strong role player who understands his limits and has been using his strengths as best he can. He'll get his points and anchor our second PP unit and I think he's content with that. So far I've been impressed with his play and attitude as i wasn't sure what we were going to get when we signed him.
Mors 201 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I'll give him credit, he's definitely trying to step up his game this time around (as he should).
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 he's looked solid and although I'd prefer to see Ericsson on the 2nd PP, he's looker WORLDS better back there than Sammy, better shots, better decisions and WAY better at keeping the puck in...

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I was definately upset when they signed him. Especially when they signed bertuzzi, the Williams deal just seemed like it shouldnt have happened. After seeing him in the preseason and the first few games, I am happy to admit that I was wrong about my doubts. I'm impressed with his speed, but most impressed with his stick handling ability. Superman54 91 Report post Posted October 9, 2009 I dont have a problem with Williams, I just don't see why we needed to add another player like him. If we signed more gritty players, Detroit would have been a very balanced team this year. I know the wings have proved they don't need a fighter, but after two grueling seasons itd have made more sense to bring in a player with some jump, and toughness.
