Not even 100% gold? What a ripp off. It's the Olympics...one of the oldest living sporting events ever and they dont even have real gold medals. Sheesh...

It's actually THE oldest sporting event.

Not the Winter Olympics, of course, but the Olympics in general.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough. Sorry. I don't like the wavy design of them, even knowing what it represents. I think it's too regional, which is something that tends to happen in Canada all too often. I'm saying they could have had some designs inlaid instead of changing to whole shape of them. I realize also that putting the Rockies on may be considered regional, but it's something most Canadians can relate to. I'm not saying I could have done better, by the way, because I'm no artist. It's all west coast imagery, nothing about the prairies or Ontario/Quebec, or the Maritimes.

And my knowledge of Canada's history is just fine. I just don't like everything being about Aboriginals.

So wait, putting the rockies on them is something that all Canadians can relate to (even the Canadians that live in Quebec and Ontario, who live NOWHERE NEAR the Rockies), and making the medals wavy like water or the region that the Olympics are held in isn't something that they can relate to, yet the Rockies are?

I'm facepalming so effing hard right now.

Just go watch hockey and keep drooling. Don't worry, we'll continue to discuss the medals without your circular logic.

Like I said, even though the Rockies may seem too regional, most can relate to them. The whole landmark thing. I don't like the wavy design just because it looks cheesy (earlier post). It's okay, I should have known my thoughts wouldn't come across very clear. I'm finding it difficult to put in here what I'm trying to say without being too offensive, and starting a firestorm...oops.

No need to facepalm too hard, I don't want you to bruise yourself.

Are these Olympic boats you're talking about? The Aboriginals did many things. I am aware of this. I just don't think symbols for Aboriginals need to be everywhere for the Olympics. JMHO.

Uh, they aren't. The mascots for one look like they came out of a children's anime and there's plenty of 'traditional' Canadian imagery in the new Canada hockey logos. It isn't nearly as prevalent as people are whining about; in fact these medals (and the bastardized imagery in the hockey jerseys) are the first examples of anything genuinely related to Pacific-Coast native art I've seen this entire pre-Olympic run.

So did an abi design the Nucks logo?

Very doubtful. I actually tried researching it for an assignment in my NW Coast Native Art class last year but didn't find a whole lot about where exactly the logo came from beyond Orca Bay.

I think both are awesome, the paralympic ones could have had circle shapes too though.

I haven't checked for awhile but I don't think i remember seeing anything like a beaver, a loon, a maple leaf or any of our other national symbols on it, although I do enjoy the Orca/Abi business.

I'm gonna get a bit political, but it's the Olympics, and it's not like this thread is about hockey anyways.

I don't like the way Canada has handled the politics of the Olympics.

First off, prohibiting protesting during the event is just wrong, and HAS been done via law specific to the Olympics.

Second, Canada has given the Olympic Committee exclusive use rights (like trademarks, except they wrote it in law special for the Olympics) on words such as "Olympics", "Winter", "Games", "Vancouver", "2010", etc... VERY generic names that basically allow the IOC to sue and do whatever they please legally.

Medals are cool I guess.
