WpgMikos 17 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 Interesting article I was reading on a SenSay (a Sens blog) although the material obviously applies to all teams. Haven't yet looked at the numbers to verify, but if it holds up, basically suggests that by sometime in November you are either in the playoffs or not, and rest of the season is jockying for position. Interesting. If you look over the past few years, the first 8 teams in a conference to book 38 pts., make the post season. Entire article, click here. And let's hope the Wings get rolling towards 38 (and beyond) with 2 points in Phoenix. I bet the N.Y. Mets wished this applied in baseball, so their end of season collapses wouldn't be so costly. Jaymister 71 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 You don't have to look back very far to see this is not always the case. Although i will agree it is much harder to make the playoffs if you have a poor start. St.Louis was in the basement of the Western Conference for much of the first three quarters of the last season and finished in 6th place. Phoenix was in a playoff spot last season at the allstar break and finished well outside the top 8. Ottawa is prime example that great starts don't mean all that much come April. Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 Were the Pens in the playoffs then? I know they weren't in the playoffs for at least a month last year, I think it was for longer than a month.

I would love to be better than 3-3-2 right now but it is far from a backbreaker to start that way when a season is over 80 games long.
Gordie Howe hat trick 110 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 It is amazing how everyone around here flips out if we hit a rough patch...Hang them! Hang Lebda, Meech, and Osgood...while we are at it crucify Howard for no apperent reason as well!!! Christ people...
Guest CaliWingsNut Report post Posted October 23, 2009 I don't agree with the 8 to 38 at all... Just a coincidence to the fact that good teams play good games throughout the season, while the lesser teams sometimes struggle a bit more. A good trade, a new coach, a bad stadium display, who knows what really will happen. However feel free to place your bets in Vegas on those odds if you'd like. It is amazing how everyone around here flips out if we hit a rough patch...Hang them! Hang Lebda, Meech, and Osgood...while we are at it crucify Howard for no apperent reason as well!!! Christ people... J Howard has had it coming for a while. He has yet to show why he's on the team, especially over Conklin. The team put themselves in a position where they were stuck taking him this year or throwing out his last several years of development. Just because your knowledge of him is limited to this past 2 months doesn't mean ours is.....
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 we have 8pts in 8 games... i am pretty sure that batting 500 is pretty damn good. no point in exherting yourself if you are just going to get tuckered out in the finals. Maybe they learned their lessen... work less in the regular season and have more energy in the post season.

Maybe they learned their lessen... work less in the regular season and have more energy in the post season. 8 pts in 8 games is not pretty damn good, it's okay and certainly nothing to worry about yet, but if they keep up that same pace for the whole year and finish with 82 points in 82 games, they will be a long, long way from a playoff spot (that would likely leave them as one of the bottom 3 or 4 teams in the conference). I have plenty of knowledge on Howard, I think that it is shameful how people on this board think that he isn't worth a damn when he is young, will make his mistakes, and has a promising future ahead of him. Things take time, I think the problem is we are all stuck in the rut of gratification first. And forget most players take time to get up to their potential. gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 Listen, if the playoffs started today, Colorado would be first in the West followed by Phoenix. This is reason enough to chill the *beep out for awhile and wait for the season to level out. It WILL happen.
Free_Candy 38 Report post Posted October 23, 2009 (edited) Were the Pens in the playoffs then? I know they weren't in the playoffs for at least a month last year, I think it was for longer than a month. At that time, they were. Pens did well in October and November (at least on record, but they were showing signs of impending trouble and weren't playing 60 minutes of hockey very consistently). The s*** hit the fan in early December, and from then until February it was putrid. I think they slipped out of the playoff picture around mid January until mid February when they fired Therrien. It's an interesting theory, but I don't know if 8 to 38 really holds a lot of water. For a while in the east, it was Boston/Washington/New Jersey/Philly as safe bets, but for the other 4 slots it was one big happy horse racin' crapshoot between several teams, it could have gone a lot of different ways. Jaymister 71 Report post Posted October 24, 2009 All it takes to make into the playoffs is stay within ten points of that 8th spot and get red hot the last quarter of the season. Pittsburgh and St.Louis proved that last year.

Pittsburgh and St.Louis proved that last year. Not the most ideal way to do things, but obviously possible as proven. Would love to be better than 3-4-2 right now but it's a long ways away from anything to be decided.

Excellent would have been 16points 8 games and Horrific would have been 0 points in 8 games. now that we have 8pts in 9 games we are just doing pretty good (removing the 'damn' as we are not getting a point per game anymore)

Didn't you get the memo... the Uppers said this is what you are to expect from now on... So its the perfect start for the new improved lower expectations team. enjoy How stupid people will feel in this thread bitching if they win out the rest of the games and end in first once again. its NINE games in boys and girls.... the Win/Loss curve is skewed with only 11% of the decisions in for the season. You can start your panic when 80% or more of the decisions are in and we are still in 12th place... until then quit your bitching... save it up Edited October 27, 2009 by OsGOD
