stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 Is it just me or is Minnesota's new green jersey one of the coolest jersey's in the league? I love it - this needs to be their new main and they need to scrap the old logo and jerseys and just do a green version for home and a white version for away... very classy, simple... perfect. Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 I can't believe anyone would like those horrlbe wordmarked jerseys. This isn't college.
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) I can't believe anyone would like those horrlbe wordmarked jerseys. This isn't college. I like a clean basic/simple look. While the Red Wings jersey doesn't have any lettering on it, they have as basic of a jersey as it gets. What about the Rangers jersey? An original six "traditional" team? Their jersey is even more basic with lettering. Simple and effective. Do you hate theirs as well? Edited October 27, 2009 by SouthernWingsFan

I'm not a fan, but they used lettering a lot back in the day, and since they have kept it so for so long, it isn't as bad as a tacky third jersey design to sell merchandise. The Rags are the only team that have used a script as a logo for an extended period of time. Everything else with script as a primary has looked absolutely awful. Also consider the design aspect. The rags use a very original design with the script, while the Wild jersey is similar to many college jerseys. I don't mind the rest of the jersey, but DESIGN A GOOD LOGO. Cern 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 (edited) I can't believe anyone would like those horrlbe wordmarked jerseys. This isn't college. I'd actually say that wordmark jerseys are a great make-or-break test of design. It's really easy to make a horrible wordmark jersey (see Atlanta, Dallas, TB, Ottawa), but when they're done right I think they look fantastic. Besides, even if most teams don't adopt a script for a logo, a good number of them do virtually the exact same thing by stamping a letter onto the jersey anyway. Why is a stylized letter fine but a stylized word not? Edited October 27, 2009 by Cern

MabusIncarnate 5,359 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 I like the new look a lot, the cream on green is much better than the christmas-like green with red. I do like the logo of their previous jerseys, but wasn't too crazy about their circle logo jerseys.
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 Well, yes, they have had a script as their primary design, but I wouldn't quite call it an extended period of time. The Duckies have been in that sweater since 2006. 3+ years isn't quite what I would call extended. Though, for a team that goes through jersey designs like socks, maybe 3+ years really IS an "extended period"... But compared to the Rags? Since 1926 they have only had 3 years where their current script logo (or subtle variations thereof) hasn't been used. Regarding the Minnesota jersey... Meh. I like the design of the sweater, kinda nostalgic & heritage styled. But I'm not a fan of the script logo. As Doc mentioned earlier, it looks too much like a Spartans jersey. Cern 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 You really don't understand the difference? A logo normally "represents" something. A wordmark normally "describes" something. What does the Flames' logo 'represent'? It's a big C with some wavy lines added to it. That's it.
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 What does the Flames' logo 'represent'? It's a big C with some wavy lines added to it. That's it. The flames represent the team name. The C represents calgary (as did the A when it was the Atlanta flames). That is a logo. Just because it is a logo doesn't make it good. It doesn't have to be complex either to be good. But putting in a wordscript because you cannot make a logo to represent the team you are designing it for just seems lazy, and the design they used was just bad. It reeks of College Hockey jerseys which is why I hate it.
Cern 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 The flames represent the team name. The C represents calgary (as did the A when it was the Atlanta flames). That is a logo. So it in fact 'represents' nothing whatsoever beyond the team's name. It has the EXACT same effect as a wordmark, just because you need two braincells to figure it out instead of one dosen't change that. Just because it is a logo doesn't make it good. Yeah, if you just slap the team name onto the chest in some featureless Impact-esque font it's going to suck - there are plenty of third jerseys that prove that. Placing Minnesota's jersey into that category is asinine though, it's a wordmark but it's clear that they actually put some effort into making it visually interesting. It has the EXACT same effect as a wordmark, just because you need two braincells to figure it out instead of one dosen't change that. A logo is a representation whether you think it is simple and stupid or not. And that is a logo. For the record the little thing that goes in front of the jersey is meant to perform the same task. Both logos and wordmarks are meant to tell the viewer what the team is. They do it in different ways. This is why things like fonts and visual embellishments are important. It is a professional team's hockey jersey, yet it looks like a college word mark. Try to make the effort into creating a logo that can represent the team well and compliment the jersey. Don't be lazy and put the team name and location and then add some asthetics to it to make it seem like you "did your best to make it look interesting." It isn't good. It looks bad. Calgary's logo looks like a piece of clip art and represents nothing, where's the professionalism in that? Minn's third looks eons better than most regular jerseys in the league as-is, let alone most other 3rd jerseys. Edited October 28, 2009 by Cern

Minn's third looks eons better than most regular jerseys in the league as-is, let alone most other 3rd jerseys. The crappiness of Calgary's logo isn't the issue. It is a very similar logo, and is very reminiscent of college wordmarks in general. That is why I think it is a piece of crap.
