I am quite certain the proverbail hockey "facewash" is contributing to the spread of this virus. Will the NHL have the guts to stop facewashing? What's next, no more communal gatorade bottles on the bench? I never thought about this, but from a microscopic point of view hockey is a very "rich" sports environment.

The Capitals are worried now that Laing was diagnosed:

The Caps are taking steps to prevent the spread of swine flu. Smith held a meeting with the players and coaches before today's practice to outline the symptoms -- fever over 101 degrees, body aches, sore throat and congestion and coughing -- and urged them to see the team's medical staff immediately if they begin to feel unwell.

Seems to be quite the polarizing issue. Wonder why its suddenly become so prevelant in the news? Hasn't swine flu been around since 76?

On the Beat: Plenty of injury news including Predators Dan Hamhuis writing about his injury and Roberto Luongo out a week, Don't play Bouleas with Andreas Lilja, H1N1 news, Halak for 5th game in a row, Ducks can blame porous defence for poor start.

lol swine flu, like it is going to affect an nhl player adversely, out 2 games max

If their immune system is like most of ours, than it will kick their ass, probably lose weight and be drained physically for about a week.

From Toronto Star :

...

The Washington Capitals confirmed Wednesday that forward Quintin Laing is being treated for H1N1, making him at least the fourth NHL player to be diagnosed with it.

...

...

"We have been regularly providing our clubs with updated information and recommendations as they become available," the NHL said in a statement. "We have not mandated specific precautions or courses of action. The league is monitoring the progression of the flu, but have (sic) implemented no specific `contingency plans' at this point in time. However, we will be prepared to do so should it become necessary."

...

One of the steps taken by Edmonton: each player now has their own water bottle.

I don't know if you guys read all the stuff Piet Van Zant said about the team preventing it, but it was pretty funny. He made it sound like the team runs around rubbing their noses on doorknobs (click the link in the signature for a pretty humerous picture of Kronner to accompany this image). Let's hope the Wings can make it out of Edmonton healthy. I'm crossing my fingers.

From TSN :

The Alberta government has launched an investigation into how members of the Calgary Flames and their families scored swine flu shots at a special clinic as thousands of people waited in line for the vaccine or were turned away.

Premier Ed Stelmach said Alberta Health Services is looking into what happened.

"I can't speculate on what happened, but we will have a full report very shortly."

Ken King, president of the NHL club, said the players and their families received their shots on Friday at a private location. He said the organization contacted Alberta Health Services and requested the clinic based on the guidelines available at the time.

I wanna know how they can confirm that it's Swine Flu since the strand of Swine Flu and the Regular Flu are just about identical??

We swab for flu A and flu B. If flu A is positive it's most likely H1N1. If you've had symptoms for less than 72 hours, CDC recommends treatment with Tamiflu. Although that will only decrease length of symptoms by 0.2 days.
