What happened to the glamour?

I've never found Zetterberg to be overly impressive in the shootout. In fact, when he does manage to put the puck in the net, more often than not it's when goalies are silly enough to fall for the Forsberg deke.

As I watched tonight myself and Booster313 wondered in the shoot out? Where was Datsyuk's dekeing ability? What about Z's signiture goal? What do you guys think?

I think that's the problem. You don't want to be known for a move in the shootout, because when you aren't going to do that move, it's pretty obvious. You want to keep the goalie guessing, and Khabibulin definitely knew what was coming from those two tonight.

The fact that you can use "glamour" to describe the shootout is a good example of why I don't like as a part of hockey. :P

Harold I completely agree! I actually think we have discussed it before. I highly dislike the shoot out! I have been against it from the get-go, unfortunately it is costing us points and we need to be better in it. I thought both Dats and Z were weak in it tonight. I hate that a point comes down to it but it does. This is our third we have dropped in the SO and I might be wrong but I don't even remember us scoring even once yet.

I honestly don't know what to think when Williams is arguably 1 of our best performers in the shoot-out.

That said I knew Hank was gonna blow it...Not bashing him, nor am I placing the loss upon his shoulders, but I haven't been overly impressed with his success ratio...Please correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Hudler about as good in these shoot-outs as Williams - I mean damn near guaranteed to score

Despite his inability to score tonight, Willy has always been a reliable option in the shootout.

I don't get why everyone's getting on Dats' and Zetterberg's case for shooting instead of deking. They approached their turn the right way I thought after Bulin's poor play in net late in the game. My only concern has to be why didn't they shoot high on him instead of 5 hole (maybe because of Bulin's size?). Datsyuk should've definitely went high with his disguisable release and Zetterberg should've came in with more speed; he was the most predictable IMO even though he thought he was gonna outsmart Bulin by going the same route Datsyuk did.

The Wings have never been a great shootout team, I always dread it when a game comes to that. Don't they listen to Mickey? The corners don't move. All three of our shootout players hit Khabibulin with their shot, he didn't really have to do anything. Datsyuk looked ike he just wanted to get it over with and Zetterberg looked half asleep. Williams, Leino and Bertuzzi should be our shootout performers. Yes, Bertuzzi. He could just shoot it into the goalies chest and then bowl him over, that seems legal in todays NHL.

Yeah even though I was disappointed with their efforts, they need to mix it up and shoot from time to time.

But then again I think Pavel has had weak SO attempts for a while now. Almost ever since that awesome deke against Minnesota last year. Not sure if he has scored on the SO since then, but it feels like he hasn't.

And I think I'd rather see Bertuzzi or Leino in the SO than Zetterberg.

Well, Williams has a decent record.

Hudler was pretty good, but I swear that he almost always used that deke-to-the-backhand-and-roof-it move. I would like to see Bertuzzi get a shot, he has decent hands. Leino would be interesting too.

Also, it's not the Forsberg move, Nilsson did it first...

either you shoot, or you deke. When a player shoots, it doesn't look like he's "trying" because it isn't very creative. But it can be successful. And I'm sure they were trying.

If the average shooter is successful on about 1/3 of his shootout attempts, about 30% of the time by random occurrance your team will not have any of their 3 shooters score. you'll get 1 goal about 44% of the time, 2 goals 22%, and have all 3 score in the shootout about 4% of the time.

Getting shutout on the shootouts isn't that rare. Actually, I kind of liked that they didn't luck their way into a free 2nd point... maybe they can use it as a teaching point to give effort ALL game long so they can actually get 2 points!

I honestly prefer the shoot-out over watching both teams playing "not to lose" hockey for an additional 5 minutes just so they can each get 1 point, and call it a night <_<

Feel free to have your opinion, but if you come away with the idea that the Oilers deserved to win or the Wings deserved to lose a 65 minute hockey game because of something analgous to a free throw/slam dunk competition, I can't help you.

4-on-4 OT hockey is some of the most entertaining hockey there is. Why give a point to the losing team? Expand it to 10 minutes (which would probably be completed in less time than it takes them to resurface part of the ice and go 3 or more rounds in a shootout anyway). Heck, make it so that it's 3 on 3 following any stoppage after the 5:00 mark.

I refuse to accept that teams wouldn't be interested in winning when the difference between losing and winning is 2 points instead of 1. Also, it's a heck of a lot different to try and play for a tie holding out for 10 minutes, as opposed to 5. The shootout is a joke, and the fact that some of the best scorers in the NHL are some of the worst shootout takers (including Ovechkin, I believe, who is extremely ordinary at it) tells you all you need to know. Nobody ever watched a NBA 3-point contest and concluded that Mark Price was the best player in the NBA.

I think it was a s***ty showing by the Wings in the shootout. Datsyuk looked like he didn't even give a rat's ass whether he got one through or not.

I guess the city of Edmonton will do that to you, though.

Edit: spelling

Yeah, thats it. Pavel just didn't care, the sonafabitch.
