Carman 387 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 I'm really excited about Eaves, hopefully he can get comfortable and actually reach the potential he had early in his career.
miller76 463 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) Finally. I keep saying this every game with him. He is just a pylon skating in circles, getting beat to pucks, not doing anything when he does have the puck. I have consistently bit my tongue all last season, off season, and pre-season. So many on here have been so high on him, when he has shown mediocrity at best. I hope a game off will spark something in him to be a more complete player. 10 Minute Misconduct 104 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Another player who was comming into the season, completely over-rated on these boards.
zettie85 106 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Lieno is scratched for not playing the role Babs wants him to play. He was a one hit wonder in the Finnish league, brought here to be a goal scorer. Well sorry to tell you that it's not going to be full of multi goal games or Richard trophies. He is a fourth or third line checker at best. In my opinion he plays that role and eats minutes well for what he is capable of in the big leagues.
Motown4013 350 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Another player who was comming into the season, completely over-rated on these boards. Well said and finally Babcock does something to say to the guys who aren't working and aren't producing...play 60 minutes or you can sit. I really like this move. it will be interesting how Ville responds-it will show alot about his character
cjm502 165 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Im very happy with this. It is sending a message, and big time. Babs is proving a point, and even more so now that we have so many injuries. As for Eaves I was very impressed with him, he was not invisible last night like he normally is. I went as far as voting him player of the game last night, his overall play was excellent. Broken 16 381 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 I just fear that Leino isn't a kinda player who plays better with that kinda coaching. He hasn't been that good (not the only one in the team), but that decision may just make things worse. Unless, he's changed (from the years in Finland) and gets a boost from that, which I really hope. I hope he's not expected Babcock and Co. to coddle him. He's in for a rude awakening. Pskov Wings Fan 71 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 I am not sure how to read Leino's quote. “I haven’t really been able to play my game, doing the things I want,'' Leino said. “I want to go and play and have fun and not really think all the time what to do. It was slowing me down.’’ He is either not happy with his own play or with the system, which does not allow him to do the things he want to do. I hope it is the former. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 I am not sure how to read Leino's quote. He is either not happy with his own play or with the system, which does not allow him to do the things he want to do. I hope it is the former. Sounds like the system. He wants not to think about things and "feel" for the game. He should be allowed to do so to a degree, but he can't neglect "thinking" to play defensively. Carman 387 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Eww, really don't like that quote from him. I'm not going to hang him for that, but he isn't winning points from me saying things like that. Hopefully he didn't mean it.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 I started to get the same feeling in an early summer thread about Leino coming up full-time. He said something along the lines of "it was the NHL or nothing" and "he didn't come here to play in the AHL" and I thought that wasn't the type of attitude or work ethic the Wings support. I was then proceeded to get tore up in the thread for calling him out. He got paid way more in Europe. He put in a year in the AHL to get into the Wings org. He's 25 years old man, what else do you expect? How long do you take the significantly lower paying job in hopes of getting your dream job before you go home to your family and take the next best thing? He tore it up in the AHL and deserves his NHL roster spot. The Wings consider him an important piece. A quote in a press clipping about wanting to play in the NHL is hardly a comment on his work ethic. If he were drafted at the standard age of 18 he'd have already put in 7 years in the minors. 25 year old prospects say s*** like that all the time.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Every so often, an athlete, regardless of sport needs that kind of message sent. Scratch an NHLer. Punch a boxer in the face when their guard is down in a spar. Something. I agree 100%. This should light a fire under Leino's ass for sure.

Pucks 66 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Fil goes down with injury, so we scratch one of our goal scorers? Put the guy with someone who can get him the puck in scoring position and that will get him going. If the coach wants to send a message to someone he should sit Brian "I make more ridiculous passes than Lang" Rafalski.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 I have not been impressed with Leino either. He should have buried that pass from Datsyuk last night. Sad thing is, we need a guy like Leino to step up even more with Mule and Fil out and he has shown no signs of filling that offensive production. Every passing game makes me want Jiri Hudler back more and more...
ManLuv4Clears 7 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) He got paid way more in Europe. Great, apparantly he doesn't like working hard or cash. He tore it up in the AHL and deserves his NHL roster spot. That's a matter of opinion, there's lots of guys in the AHL that perform well that can't do s*** in the big leagues. The Wings consider him an important piece. If so, I hope that he understands that and this lights a fire under his ass. A quote in a press clipping about wanting to play in the NHL is hardly a comment on his work ethic. Niether one of us can prove or dis-prove his work ethic, we can only have opinions on it based off what we see on the ice. LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Kenny, get Fedorov back here NOW! J/K! What would a thread be without the mention of Fedorov? anyhow, this team needs a shake up or a wake up or frickin something!!!!! We need EVERYTHING, our offense isn't going, our defense is blowing and our goalies are...well they just both suck!
RusDRW 155 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 Not a bad move by Babcock, hopefully Leino can come back strong. I have no doubt he will. and even less doubts you have ragarding Staal responding and Talbot too! You know they are the bst andwe just don't know how good chams are? Is it exactle what you had to say?
skyphoenix 153 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) Okay so babcock said that Filppulas line was the best line in the first few games but now leino isn't gelling with anyone? What do you guys expect? 40 goals? He isn't franzen. Furthermore if were going to scratch players half the defense should be out because of how bad they're playing. What do you guys expect? 40 goals? He isn't franzen. No one expected 40 goals, but I did expect better production then he's had. You have very little argument considering the guy who coaches the team thinks Leino hasn't been playing well. He's shown how good he can be, it's just a matter of him putting it forth every night. zettie85 106 Report post Posted October 31, 2009 You're not exactly an astute evaluator of talent. When Leino emerges as a 30+ goal scorer in the best league in the world, then come talk to me. Until then keep your smart ass comments to yourself. He is a very good hockey player but to live up to his expectations is unrealistic. The only way he reaches the expectation is if he plays with Dats all year but that still does not prove his natural ability. Holmstrom is proof. If breaks out and does wrack up the points then good for him, I'll take my comments back. One question for you.....When did you become a scout yourself? So you concede he's a very good player but you said he won't live up to expectations. Who expected him to be more than a very good player!? What expectations do you think I had? As far as scouting goes-- I like to rely on actual scouts through the power of reading.

His expectations are higher then what he can accomplish. He will be good to add some depth scoring for the Wing'sbut to expect anything more is unrealistic. Scouts are right 20% of the time on long shot picks. I don't think there is anyone out there that could not have predicted Crosby's potential. Most scouting is common sense. The idea that "Pro" scouts know so much about hockey is a misconception. They know systems and they know how to pick players to fit systems.
