The rule of thumb is 3 seconds, he had the whistle in his mouth but was giving it time in case it was loose.

Three seconds is quite a long time.

Anyway, the call could have easily went either way. Should the ref had blown the whistle I don't think my opinion would change much, but I am happy about the call simply because the Wings seemed like the better team tonight and deserved the two points. I would look at this whole situation much more differently had San Jose dominated the game but still only managed to get one goal on us.

Okay, I'm no referee but there's no way that can be true. I've never in my life seen a ref wait 3 secs to blow the whistle when the puck is out of sight.

Can someone please confirm this is crap? Three seconds???

Im not 100% sure on it either its just what i heard was the norm, it is always around that if the ref knows the puck is in the goalies glove he will blow the whistle right away but if there is a chance it may be loose even if out of sight i think the 3 sec rule applies, but again not 100% sure and it may vary ref to ref game to game.

It's too late to look through, but does the rulebook not say the ref should blow the whistle as soon as he loses sight of the puck? This was always what I thought it was.

With some of the scrums in front of nets, i dont believe that, the refs dont want to blow the whistle too early but if the goalie is getting pushed in and chopped at it is a different story.

Make up for Hossa's no-goal last year.

So f*** THAT.

And for Homer's 234 goals being called off for no reason. And for Bert's goal against Edmonton being waived off in the 2nd period for no reason. And for Edmonton's fifth goal during which the whistle should've blown being counted.

what do you guys think of leino tonight?

idkkk i can see him being scratched alot when may comes back if he doesnt step it up alil more

He looked good but didn't get much puck-luck. In terms of offensive chances created he was definitely one of our top six forwards-- he's just snake-bit right now... a lot like Bertuzzi, actually. Part of it is he doesn't really have much to work with in the way of linemates and isn't on the PP much anymore, but he's got to earn it and I'm sure he will with time. He's a rookie with minimal experience at the NHL level so he's still feeling everything out.

AND, kids - the Penguins are losing 4-2 to the Kings with about 2:25 left to go in the 3rd.

I hope it holds. I can't keep my eyes open so I'm going to bed.

OK, I lied. It's now 5-2. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

Yeah. I don't give a s*** really. My boys won. A bad call benefitted us (finally). I'd just be annoyed if I were a Sharks fan. Just as we have been in the past.

Meh - them's the breaks. I think the Wings outplayed the Sharks for a lot of the game, but the Sharks played a solid road game - especially considering it was the second in a row. A goal that shouldn't have been allowed was. It happens. Regardless, it was a fun game to watch. I imagine the rest of the games in the season series will be prettier, but that one was good all the way around.

I think Nabby's a better goalie than Ozzie, but he needs to be. The Wings play a solid defensive game, and it's hard to get a shot through. In a funny way, I think this might even make Ozzie look bad sometimes, when he's not quite in the game because he hasn't had anything to do for long stretches.

And every time I watch a game at the Joe on the TV, it's painful to see all of the empty seats. Not because it takes anything away from the team at all, but because I can't imagine people missing out on seeing this team.

Detroit is still the team for the Sharks to measure themselves against.

So did anyone miss Brad May tonight????

I didn't think so.

Oh wait.... maybe Jody Shelley!!! LOL...

Last year when the Wings really needed a tough guy they didn't have one. This year they really don't need one but they have one who takes up space for a good skater.

The third and fourth lines were the best skaters on the ice tonight.... love the speed and forechecking.

Notes:

+ The Red Wings notched their first shootout victory of the season in a 2-1 win.

+ Detroit remained perfect on the penalty kill thwarting all four opportunities.

+ Chris Osgood continued his strong play stopping 33 of the 34 shots he faced.

+ Todd Bertuzzi led all Red Wings with a team-high 5 shots on goal.

Add to which Chicago, Nashville and StLouis all lost. We're still 10th :ranting: but only 1 point behind Columbus, and 3rd place.

I think Zetterberg is going to put up career numbers this year if he can stay healthy. With how he is performing right now, I could see him get around 90+. Also, I thought Leino looked really good tonight, on top of the puck a lot and creating chances but once again nothing went in so no one cares  He really is not catching any breaks and hes getting knocked around everywhere.

Interesting note, lidstrom has had up towards 28mins of icetime the past three games, when they played good defensively.. early this season he was more 23-25mins....

While I always find myself wanting to see Dats deke (and Z for that matter) simply due to the effectiveness those shots have proven to be (especially for Dats), they really can't do it every single shot. Goalies at the NHL level are too sound and film is too readily available for them to note shooters' tendencies. If they don't switch it up, the success rate of those dekes *will* go down.

Of course you must change it, probably every shoot-out but there are millions of dekes you can do, and they can handle them, skilled players like these two must take advantage of that, no need to shoot it, williams could do that.. (anyone know why williams got the 2nd opportunity instead of bertuzzi? too snakebitten?)

If a goaltender knows a player is going to deke all they have to do is wait out the shooter. Of course its not as easy as I just made it sound but as I said, a goalie at the NHL level is good enough to lower the success rate of their dekes if they know its coming. Just like its not as simple to wait out a shooter making a deke, its not as simple as you stating "there are millions of dekes you can do". Again, all the goaltender has to do is wait you out which is 10-times easier to do when *you know* a player is going to make a move.

Williams is in the normal rotation with Dats and Z. That being said, he did go second which Z normally does, but I'm assuming it had to do with Z missing his last few attempts in that slot. Perhaps Babs wanted to give him a different look and it worked.
