Realistically, how much will Lidstrom re-sign for?

If Lidstrom decides to resign how much will get? Ken and Mickey suggested it'd be a 2 year deal. Would it be around $3 - $3.5 million? I know Lidstrom is the greatest defenseman in the game but he is aging (pushing 40) and I think his elbow tendinitis is rending his scoring. Should be make more significantly more than Stuart and Kronwall?

I think he'll sign a ~4 mil/year deal for 1-2 years.

I thought he had surgery on the tendinitis planned for the last offseason?

I would be surprised if it's under 4 million. I'm expecting a 5 million dollar deal for one season if his numbers are about the same as last year. If his numbers dip significantly I'd expect a 4 million dollar deal, maybe even 3.5 if he's feeling really generous and his stats are really low.

No doubt he'll sign for less than 6 million, though, as he know's he's in the the twilight of his career (twilight referring to near the end not to poorly written teen fiction).

I guess we're in a wait and see mode. I definitely don't think he'll re-sign before the Olympic break.

True if he were to shop his services on the open market - however if he stays in Detroit me thinks he'll get $4 to $5 million per year for 2 years.

He will probably get the same as Yzerman did, which was about 5-6 million a year. The term depends on Lidstrom. He could go year by year, or try a 2-3 year deal.

Like the Hossa signing, Lidstrom WILL be the highest paid player on the team.

That said, He'll make no less than 6.7 million.

I strongly disagree. Lids is a smart guy, and if he wants to play and WIN for the last year or two of his career, he will re-sign somewhere in the 3.5-4.5 million dollar range, enabling the Wings to have some offseason cash to make themselves a contender again.

Also, look at it from Hollands perspective. Why would he want to re-sign him to a contract thats going to handcuff him for two years. Lidstrom is a great great player, but the truth is he is slowing down. He is going to do whats right in order to be a champion in his last couple of years and he will take a pay cut.

Either that or sign him to a 2 year deal, first year at 7 mill, second at 1, and then have him retire :P

With any luck, Nick will take note of the poor play around here and resign for as little as possible. If we can shed a few million here and there, and plug in some useful bodies, we could be a great team once again.

I could be wrong, and I don't feel like looking it up, but isn't there a rule that if you sign a contract and you're over 35 that you can't retire during it and have the $ come off the cap? I believe it's one of the safeguards they put in place for the cap era with just that kind of logic in mind.

This could be true...I was partly kidding anyways, but that rule would make a whole lots of sense.

Lidstrom will sign a four year deal for:

1st year - 6.5 mil

2nd year - 6.5 mil

3rd year - 1 mil

4th year - 1 mil

*****FOR a $3.75 mil cap figure. ******

DO it before the new CBA eliminates these "front-loaded" contracts.

I see either a 1 year deal at 4.5 mil, or a 2 year deal at 3.5 mil per year with probably 4 in the first year and 3 in the next.

Cant do that in this CBA either, you cant have a 50% drop over a year.

It's my understanding that in the current CBA if a player is over 35 and signs a contract that cap hit counts for the duration of the contract regardless of any possible retirement. Therefore, if Lidstrom were to sign a two year deal for $8M as you mentioned and retires after one year we get a cap hit of $4M the next year regardless. If that rule wasnt in place everyone would sign deals like that.

Personally I dont even think it's a guarentee Lidstrom comes back at this point. It's early in the year, the team is struggling, and with the Olympics he is going to be realyl tired come next summer (even without a deep playoff run).

If he does come back my guess would be $4-4.5M on a one year deal. I can't see him signing anything but one year deals. There's just no advantage to him or to the team.

I thought all Swedes play for free once they hit the twilight years, no?

Seriously, if Lids wants to play again, I doubt he will want to play anywhere else other than the Wings. He is also all class so I think he will sign for a reasonable amount between 3.5-4 mill so that there will be some cap space freed up to get some other 'pieces of the puzzle' so to say.

I'm sure Lidstrom would want to go out with a bang. If we win the cup this year he'll likely retire. If not, I hope resigns a 1 year deal so low that we can afford key players that can help this team to the cup...

How about this.... Lidstrom signs a 1 year deal for $1.5 million and Illich can give Lidstrom a birthday gift of $4 million cold cash in USD funds. One can hope.... :)

That's not true..... Zetterberg's salary drops from $7 mil to 3.35 mil in 2018.... unless rule was changed .... don't see how.

NO big deal anway.... here's another:

1st year - 6.5 mil

2nd year - 6 mil

3rd year -3.1 mil

4th year - 1.6 mil

5th year - .850 mil

Salary cap hit per year = $3.61 mil
