Shoulder to head, much like Richards shoulder to the head of Booth earlier this season. A definite blindside, but not against the rules i guess.

What happens at the end of the video always makes me chuckle.

There are major differences between this and the Richards hit on Booth.

Modano is receiving the pass, while Booth was passing the puck. Modano is looking directly away from Messier receiving the puck while Booth was more aware of his surroundings.

Booth saw Richards coming and was attempting to avoid Richards, but could not get fully out of the way. The left-handed Modano had no idea Messier was there.

Messier cut in and hit Modano shoulder-to-head without anything 'accidental' about it. It wasn't like Messier was just trying to hit him and missed; he targeted his head. Messier also leaves his left skate on the hit. Before you start in with the "Well, Messier is a big guy and he just hit Modano in the head because of size" remember that Modano is two inches taller.

It's funny because it's almost like you're trying to convince us that Richards' blatant shot to Booth's head was justifiable. As if there's an appropriate time to gleefully drill a man's skull into last week. I love hitting in hockey. But this game is nothing if the men who play it don't at least kind of respect their opponent enough not to make potentially career ending hits to the brain. I've seen tons of players let up on a check because their opponent was in a vulnerable position. Tons of players will pull up a bit and try not to hit the other guy in the frigging skull. Other guys just don't care. It's not about removing hitting it's about inserting a bit of fricking respect.

Why would a decent person deliberately put someone's brain and spinal cord in such danger?

Richards' hit wasn't a blatant shot to Booth's head. Had Booth not suddenly stopped his forward movement, it would have been a crushing shoulder-to-shoulder hit. The problem is, Booth stopped and got his body out of the way, but not his head. Richards had already committed to hitting Booth and it's not like he could suddenly not hit him. Physics don't work that way.

Man where has the respect between the players gone in today's game?

Yeah, there were as many dirty players then as there are now. I mean, not to disparage Mr. Hockey or Terrible Ted, but how many people are running around these boards with sigs bearing quotes about their nasty elbows and attitude? Not saying there shouldn't be rules changes to punish blindside hits, but the histrionics over the lack or respect in today's players is annoying.

Yeah, there will always be dirty plays and dirty players. Just need to change the rules to adapt to the change of speed, equipment and strength with today's players.

WTF. Worst. Medics. Ever.

Looks like a pretty vicious hit by mess. Like you said, not necessarily against the rules, but he should still know better. The EMT personel are the real badguys here.

If I didn't know better, I would have thought that was a WWE bit the way it happened.

Saying things as if they're true doesn't make them so.

You seriously need to watch the video of the hit again. He stopped and got his body out of the way???

He makes the slightest move with his feet like he's starting a turn, but hardly changes speed. He didn't even start to hockey stop or jump out of the way because he never saw the hit coming.

As for the Modano video, I cringe everytime they drop him. You'd think the NHL would have better guys on standby than those clowns. Good thing he didn't have a neck injury.

Messier was capable of being a cheap player, except that late in his career everyone forgot that because he became so respected.

Don't know what he had against Madonna, but there was no reason for that play. I'm surprised no one on Dallas's roster tried to do anything about it.

So true. Mess was famous for exacting his revenge if a player did something he didn't approve of. Often with his elbows.

Didn't he end his career on a two game suspension along with an injury?

I think Messier had as many suspensions as Pronger has... thanks so much for posting that clip, as yet again I am pissed off thinking of the 'Messier Leadership Award' and how the hell if they were really dying to have a pretty much impossible to measure award (at least on a year-to-year basis), why was it not named after Jean Beliveau? Messier was a hell of a player and was a good leader (at times), but he is one of the most overrated players of all time.
