technically by your argument Russia would be #1

population of 141,800,000 with hockey a close 2nd in popularity to soccer...

Yep. I never said US was no. 1... I said US > Canada by numbers. There's a reason all those KHL players are earning mad money.

yep, plus the tax rates are much lower than Canada and United States, so $1m in Russia could be worth more than $1.5M in United States since you are not giving up half of your salary to the gov't, wich is why Hudler bailed...

Canada just let their game become one of America's games.

Uhh, how? The only thing you have proven is that there are more people in the United States than in Canada, so in return there should be more people that like hockey. We have already showed the percentages and house league players point towards Canada too. And about 2/3 of the posts in this thread.

Your entire argument is ridiculous.. there wouldn't even be an NHL if it weren't for Canada. Half of the league is made of Canadians, the USA contributes 21 percent of the players to the NHL (half of which are crap).

On the flip side, America contributes well over half the $ that keeps the league rolling. Canada has the middle management, America has the supervisors.

But really... Canada. There's no debate.

Canada, by far, without question, shouldn't even be a THOUGHT about a debate. Hockey is to most Canadians what football is to a lot of Americans... what baseball used to be to so many Americans... what sand is to the desert. PRETTY IMPORTANT.

Watch a little TSN Sports Centre.... 25 minutes of hockey followed by 10 minutes of "everything else" followed by another 25 minutes of hockey. ESPN's Sports Center? "What's hockey?"

Every little town in Canada has a rink, and it's the busiest place in town, except maybe the church on Sunday... and even that's debatable. Plenty of bigger cities, suburbs, towns, etc. in the US don't have access to a rink within miles.

Also, realize that "hockey" extends far beyond just the NHL.

Are you trying to bash Finland, Czech Republic and Slovakia by leaving them out of the list?

Don't know which games you've been watching but I've seen USA get beaten by Finland quite many times.

Also, if you say USA is the #1 because of NHL, that's just stupid. USA is a bigger country overall, has more money and more people living in it. Of course it has a bigger league. Finland's population is only about 5 million and still we have some pretty good players.

Those are definately hockey countries. Although I think the point of the thread was to decide on the best hockey country out of those that are most well-known. No bashing on Finland, you guys have produced some fantastic players.

Canada.

Not just saying that because I am Canadian, it's because it's true.

U.S.A is next, Sweden & Russia tied for 3rd spot.

If hockey is soooooooooooo big in Canada, then why are there only 6 teams out of a 30 team league there? Canada is losing its grip. More and more players are developing in different countries and then playing professionally in the USA.

You answered this yourself many times already. Because the USA has a higher population, thus making it more attractive for NHL teams.

You are right, more and more players are developing in other countries and then playing on teams all over the world, many of which are in the United States - But, that does not mean Canada is 'losing its grip'. While the sport is becoming popular in other countries, it still remains the most important sport in Canada, and everyone knows its Canada's game. Look at the responses thus far to your question. The responses are nearly unanimous, and they aren't just answers from Canadians.

Just because the sport is growing doesn't mean Canada is losing its grip on the sport.

You just lost all credibility with this statement. This thread is dead to me now.

Money makes the world go round. Has little to do with ice-hockey itself.
