newfy 695 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Okay if this was true it would be amazing and I doubt Abs will ever be the fighter Mac was but he will definitly be able to match him in the goal scoring department. While watching the game today the commentator made a comment that Babcock was telling Abdelkader to fight more, this combined with May giving him some lessons had me thinking. Does anyone think Abdelakder has what it takes to maybe be a solid fighter and point produer in the future or is he not that good with the fists?
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I dont believe so. He is a heck of a hitter, but he isnt very agressive with the rough stuff. For god sakes, he destroys Pat Kane and then Toews sits on him and he gets up and does nothing. He should've grabbed Toews and started feeding him if Toews wanted some. I think he's more in the Marty Lapointe mold, just a LH shot.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Babs said that? Abdelkader could easily become a decent fighter. He just needs lessons and to actually fight alot.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 (edited) I hope he's not the next McCarty. He has the skill and potential to be much more than Mac was. EDIT: Mac was a 10-15 goal, 30 point player average over his career and a 15-20 goal, 40-point player at his best. Abby should be much better than that. jollymania 162 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 (edited) I liked his hit today, he is definitely a great hitter, hopefully he takes to dropping the gloves and scoring as well. Edited December 21, 2009 by jollymania

The commentator said something about Babs teling him to fight more and that Babs told him he's allowed to punish guys in fights now in the NHL. And eva yeah he has potential to score more then Mac I see him as maybe a 50 point season type guy, I just meant next Mccarty in the sense that he can produce and still fight when called on. From what I've read he had a few fights with the Griffs last year and beat a couple guys up pretty good. Lately he's seemed more apt to the rough stuff after whistles and stuff

Then Toews comes in with the might and fury of an anemic kitten and Abs just takes it like a pedo on his first day of prison? WTF?
Miller Brew 0 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Does anyone have the Abby hit on Kane? That was a thing of beauty. In another play Malby decimated some Hawky... after the hit the Hawky p*ssy flopped around like a rag doll. Their team is f'in soft! Glad to see Griffins made of fool of them physically. It caused me to revisit some Vladi, Kocur, McCarty memories.

Yeah I get frustrated how in games liek that guys who have shown they can fight like Abdelkader get a perfect excuse to tee off on a division rival's star player's head and our team just sits there and acts like nothing happened. Plays like that can really set the tone for playoffs and so on, the wings have capable scrappers, May is just the only one doing it.
Guest micah Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I like Abs quite a bit. I predict he'll never have either 10 fights or 50 points in a single NHL season. I hope I'm wrong on both. I don't think I will be.
Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Seems more like he would become a less douchebaggy Maltby (on the ice that is).

I don't think I will be. Seems to me like he has all the tools to be a 10 fight a year guy if he can't hack it as a goal scorer. Big body, strong, plays physical. Either way I thik he should listen to Babcocka nd start fighting more

If a teams underachieving captain engages you, a 3rd line center who is rough and tumble, you absolutely have to get him off the ice and get him in the chin a couple times. He'll learn, but should the situation arise on Wednesday he better get after Toews.

When you're a plug and an opponent's star player wants to fight you, you do your best and take your lumps with pride. While, ideally you'd deliver the lumps, but still. If we were playing Boston, what better a contribution could Lebda make than getting into a scrap with Chara?

AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I did not watch the game (thankfully) but just watched "the hit" on the NHL link. Seriously? We are calling that a major hit, comparing him to McCarty? HE BASICALLY PUSHED HIM OVER. The hit on Zetterberg was a hit. A Kronwalling of Havlat is a hit. That was nothing. I'd be shocked if he got 50+ points in a season. There hasn't been much to suggest he'll be a huge scorer. Edit: Obviously outside of some decent AHL scoring. But as we've all seen, scoring in the AHL doesn't necessarily mean that much. Edited December 21, 2009 by Zetts

Is it bad that I immediately thought of Hatcher-Tootoo? ...And kinda want it to be reversed if the Chara-Lebda thing ever went down? canadian wings fan 305 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I believe Abdelkader can be our next Steve Yzerman with the proper coaching and guidance. He has all the tools to be the teams future leader with an offensive upside of 130-150 pts a year....from what i've seen from him so far this season, I expect him to go on a 45 game point streak and finish with around 70-75 points. I would be surprised if he didn't crack 120 points next year and win the rocket richard and hart trophies.
