Mike Danton Set to Return to Hockey

One of the most bizarre hockey stories in its history is starting a new chapter. Apparently Danton is ready to return to the ice and play for St. Mary's University once the courts settle his terms of parole. It'll be very interesting to see if he'll be able to make it back to the NHL given how long he's been away from the game and that he's 29 already.

It appears that former NHL player Mike Danton is preparing to make a return to the ice.

Danton has been cleared by the president of St. Mary's University to enroll at the school, and when that process is complete, the forward is expected to play hockey for the university.

The school tells TSN that the only details still to be worked out before his admission is complete surround the conditions of his parole, which should be settled either Monday or Tuesday this week.

I'm confused... how is he college eligible if he's already played professionally?

Isn't against NCAA rules for any player who has competed professionally to play at the college level?

On any note, good luck to him, everyone deserves a second chance

St. Mary's University = CIS hockey, in Halifax. Their rules are a little less stringent about "professionals" playing the game.

Without getting caught up in what happened, I agree. This guy spent a long time in prison for what he did, so hopefully he makes the best of his opportunity.

Interesting. I did see something during an intermission to some random NHL game I was watching between Christmas and New Year's regarding his potential return to hockey, but I wasn't paying much attention.

This caught my attention now mostly because he'll be playing at my old school.....which shoudl be obvious enough if you look to your left.

this guy should not be on the ice anywhere, under any circumstance, ever.

Why? He served his time and got his life together. I don't who else so his interview with Kypreos but he is a completely different person know. He admits it wasn't Frost he wanted dead but his father. He knows it was a mistake and he handled it wrong.

Let him play. He also mentioned that prior to the interview he had been on the ice and has not lost his speed. For someone who has been away from the game as long as he has to not have lost a step is pretty impressive.

I hope he makes the best of it.

From Toronto Star :

Brad Smith scored in overtime to lead the No. 3 Saint Mary's Huskies to a 3-2 win over the top-seeded Alberta Golden Bears in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men's hockey final on Sunday night.

...

...

Former NHLer and convicted felon Mike Danton, who spent five years in prison for conspiring to try to kill his former agent, was kept off the score sheet.

...

The CIS is similar to the NCAA, except for the free cars given to players.

good article in si about him. hes really has changed his life around, he has a 4.0 and is trying to get a phd. It doesnt change what he did, but is good to see there is a success story coming out of the prison system once in a while.

Just watched a clip on him last night and when came to the realization he would not be able to play hockey again, he took a towel that was given to him, made strips, made a noose, and put it around his neck
