Ovekchin vs Downie fight... almost

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I found it pretty funny that Bradley pretty much beelines it from the bench to Steve Downie like that. However, I was curious to finally see how AO would do in a fight.

Anyway, what do you guys think about Bradley racing over and jumpin in like that? I like Ovechkin but at some point, with his style of play he'll need to answer the bell (which he appeared willing to do).

*damn it, spelled his name wrong in the title!!

I saw it. Earlier in the game, Ovy was punching Downey in the head but it was broken up quick. Ovy's a big enough, strong enough guy that he should be able to handle a Downie. Good on him for his willingness, good on his teammate for jumping in and protecting his teams' star player frompossible injury. Good on Downie for getting Ovy in the mood for a scrap - unlike Holmstrom, Downie knows that when you can take the other team's best player off the ice for 5, you do it.

Of course Micah brings up Holmstrom in a thread completely unrelated to him.

Made sense for Bradley to jump in instead of Ovie (six minutes left and without your star player for five of those six your chances are very slim to win) but at the same time they were down by three and Ovechkin doesn't need to score for the team to dominate offensively.

This awsome both because Ovie was willing and that Bradley stepped in. This is where another issue with Phaneuf pops up. Iggy fights all Dion's battles. It should be the other way around seeing how Dion is the big tough guy on the Flame's. Phaneuf should take a page out of Bradley's book.

You make it sound like I bring up Holmstrom in most threads. I just checked. I don't.

Holmstrom's activity - or rather, his lack thereof, is entirely related this thread, silly. Downie did the right thing - even though it was a meaningls reg season game. Homer didn't do the right thing in the playoffs against the Ducks...more than once. He should watch this clip. If the topic of the thread was "great save followed by goaltender holding puck over head in triumph", it wouldn't be off-topic to say "See Patrick Roy, *that's* how you do it.

<smooch>

***** move by Bradley as part of one code, but brilliant move by Bradley as another code. OV looked like he want to throw down, good thing he didn't, Downie would have killed him. Bradley is a teammate I'd like on this team, willing to get a third man in and suspension to protect the team's number one asset. Plus, it was an entertaining fight!

Good job on everyones part. AO gets points for manning up when he's the reigning league MVP, good job by Downie trying to get the former league MVP off the ice for 5 and tremendous job by Bradley not letting a decent middleweight fighter take on one of the greatest players in the game today.

Props all around

I don't think he got a 3rd man in. He only got a 10 minute misconduct instead of a game. I don't think he should've gotten a 3MI either, as the fight hadn't really started.

I kinda wanted to see ovie fight personally, I think he could handle himself pretty well. i know people will say " but he might break a hand or something", well this is hockey and sometimes star players have to step up too

Good post.

Yeah but thats also the entire of having a person that can fight on the team, to stick up for guys like OV. I'm sure Braley would've been in huge s*** since he is a capable fighter if he just let a meathead scrub like Downie fight his captain. I wouldn't have minded seeing Oveckin fight but Bradley did the right thin.

I find it funny Ovechkin needs protection. Freaking Euro can't fight his own battles...

Crosby would of fought instead of having someone fight for him...

I hope you are being sarcastic. While Crosby does fight on occasion, he is smart enough to avoid Downey.

I can't believe Ovechkin was actually going to throw down with Downey, he likely would have gotten his ass kicked in his first NHL fight.

why does everyone think downie is so tough? i haven't seen a lot of his fights but I think ovechkin could smash that bum. Im pretty sure downie is just a punching bag

Downie isn't that bad of a fighter. He's a douchebag not a punching bag. He usually has around 10 fights a season which is a respectable number and has had 16 in one before. He can fight, Ovechkin hasn't been in a fight, he was close once with Richards but it got broken up so yeah Downie most likely would have tuned him.

Not too mention Ovechkin is European and Downie is North American haha.

Ovechkin has about 4-5 inches and 40+ pounds on Steve Downie. Perhaps you are getting him confused with Aaron Downey.

Downie tends to be a willing fighter, but he normally gets his ass kicked.

Ovechkin has never fought before, and probably doesn't know any fighting strategy. Downey on the other hand knows how to scrap. Downey would have worked Ovechkin.

He usually has around 10 fights a year? This is his 3 year in the NHL, so firstly, its hard to throw out a comment like "usual" and secondly, he had 5 fights last year and 5 fights the year before. He has 7 fights so far this year and in his career total of 17 fights, I think if you went through them, he might have won 3 of them.

His 16 fight year was in juniors.

Yeah, Downie is a s***ty fighter. He's famous because he agitates well and is a cheapshotting prick.

Ovechkin is strong, but fighting in hockey involves knowing how to balance, and it's different than fighting in real life while not on skates.

Hell, Fedor Emilianenko would probably get his ass kicked in a hockey fight, if he doesn't know how to balance properly and get a good grip.
