Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 This is what I'm thinking...If Kovalchuk, and Dats mesh well in the Olympics - might that be enough for Kovalchuk to sign with Detroit this summer? Only catch to fit him on the Wings payroll would probably be Lidstrom's retirement (or a serious paycut for next season), along with others not coming back. Actually I think its possible to have both Lids and Kovy under the cap for respectable amounts, at least it was last time I checked. That is unless Kovy really is asking 12M or some ridiculous number. By respectable I mean around 7M.

I could see getting him for mil but really he has to be in for the long haul. I don't want anymore stars for 1 year anymore. king_malice 17 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 its not going to take kronwall flip helm and howard thats crazy why do you think LA is the top runner right now for him tons of young players and draft picks and the other rumor is bruins might be willing to move chara so dont be surprised if he goes and one of those first round picks from the leafs go to i think i good offer from the wins realisticly would be flip,abdelkader/meech/lebda,first round pick this year and a pick for next year. your not gonna find to many other teams that could offer a guy like flip easily a 1st liner on other teams but goes anywhere from 1st -3rd when the wings are healthy. thrashers want young guys and picks theyre not looking for a 1 for 1 trade i doubt like the canes might move stall i cant see them doing that probably gonna go young and rebuild franzen-datsyuk-kovalchuck williams-zetterberg-bertuzzi lieno-helm-cleary miller-draper-maltby lidstrom-rafalski kronwall-ericcson stuart-janik thats moving or without in the lineup holmstrom(free agent at the end of season) lebda, meech, flip that clears up about 6.4million and kovalchuks cap hit for the 09-10 season is 6.4million now if you move holstrom, lebda, meech, flip and possible picks i know seems like alot but imagine the wings with a "PURE" goal scorer playing with datsyuk the wings have plenty of young guys coming up......just a thought but still an amazing line setup ^ with kovy
Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 Quick question: does Abby have any minor league options next year or is he required to be in the NHL?
Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 (edited) NHL10 is reality baby. Don't you forget it You're damn right it is... the problem is that Kovy wants like 9 million in the next season In all seriousness, though, it would take a lot to land him. We'd have to pick a solid prospect, and NHL calibre player and picks, as some have suggested. It's hard to give up someone Tatar or, and draft picks are so valuable these days. But in return you'd be getting a bona fide sniper to play on Datsyuk's wing. Zetterberg could then be split up and placed with Franzen to form two very solid lines. If the cap number and length were right I'd give almost anyone up outside of our core players and a few select prospects. mmamolo 287 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 It would be a tough bargain, but I'd give up E_S_A_D and/or mindfly so this team can get Kovalchuk. hell, I'd even throw in Carman just for the hell of it...although that might nix the deal from Atlanta's perspective...as he'd be a salary dump from our forum

king_malice 17 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 see i have heard different stories about kovy there was an interview with him sayin he has enough money its not about the money he wants long term and then ive heard he wants like 10yrs/10mill which i think is just to bust atlantas balls like f*** you im not signing type of thing but if the wings pulled it off i cant see him turning down like a 7yr-7mill contract to play on a contender every year and the chance to play with other type guys in the league i think if he had that choice he'd be all over it

Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 lol you actually think he will go to a team like leafs because its those kinda teams that can afford it for 8mill instead of the wings at 7mill!!?!?!? lol Nope, Kovalchuk doesn't want to play for a Canadian team, anyhow. 8m on the Bolts or another team like that on the way up? I could see that. Kovalchuk - Lecavalier - St Louis Malone - Stamkos - Downie Ouch. That would make the SE as seriously more competitive division (and epic lol if Kovalchuk goes to a division rival besides. Oh, the booing would be glorious...) If it were more like $7-8 million, I'd feel better about it. A little more cap space to work with... Also hard to swallow is that Lidstrom is not on this list. I think if we lose Lidstrom we definitely need an upgrade with our 6-7 d-men in Meech and Lebda. (Janik rates higher than either) These two do not need to/should not be resigned... and that's where the smaller cap number for Kovy would work nicely. Also, if there is no re-signing of Holmstrom, I do not think there needs to be a re-signing of Maltby. All in all, going after Kovy as a free agent is the only way I can see the Wings getting him. (...and I really don't think it's gonna happen) As we do not have the luxury of cap space like we did for the Hossa signing, I cannot fathom Holland giving up home-grown, system developed talent to go after a star forward that won't immediately fit in our system. Sure, Kovy's offense would certainly help in shoring up a playoff spot and in the playoffs themselves, but that's a moot point when factoring in the price the Wings would pay in depth to get him. On top of that, while it seems silly at this point, Atlanta seems to think that there will be no extension negotiations to possible rental suitors. That's a deal-breaker... EDIT: Clarity. e_prime 1,936 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 Chicago. Like everyone else in the league, Atlanta doesn't want the Campbell or Huet contracts if that's what you're suggesting... but they are going to have to dump some salary, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them make a decent offer to get Kovy as a rental for the playoffs. king_malice 17 Report post Posted January 15, 2010 ya chicago could do it but they would be worse off then detriot they would need to move sharp versteeg, sopel and baker or another guy just to make the room but could never afford to resign him next season so it would be dumb for them to move out those guys for one season. the wings on the other hand could move flip, holmstrom, lebda, meech and it wouldnt matter 3 are free agents at the end of the year anyway and if lidstrom retires we have an easier time resignin kovy or lidtrom signs a 1yr-1mill
