pavel datsyuk completely bombing this season

I don't know. I try not to be too hard on players, especially Datsyuk and Zetterberg who we all love, but I don't know how they can both be so mediocre this year. THey were world class for a couple years now and then suddenly both disappear at the same time for an entire season? It defies any explanation. It can't be injuries, it can't be their linemates, they should be good enough to score with anyone on their wing, that's what was said about them the past few years.

They don't even have chemistry with each other anymore, it just disappeared. We can only hope they get it together for playoffs and we can forget about why they suddenly joined the average class.

Zetterberg had 2 assists tonight and looked pretty good to me. He had a stretch of games before getting injured when he was amazing imo, despite not putting up huge numbers.

Datsyuk is really underperforming though. Tonight he looked completely out of it. A game here and there where he looks great makes it difficult for me to say it's a nagging injury or something like that. I think it's just in his head, he doesn't have that "fire" this year. Maybe he's focusing on the Olympics.

Also I have to mention that a guy like Malkin only has 43 points in 42 games. Yes it's better than Pavel but not by much, especially if you look at all the things Pav does to be useful even when he's not scoring. Even superstars underperform sometimes..

whole team is struggling not just him. one person cant carry the team themself

True, but you hope your star players can step up and carry a big part of the load. Dats was the regular season MVP last year for the Wings, and they need him now badly. He has his moments, but just hasn't looked himself most games.

34 points is completely bombing?

oh jeez

c'mon, this is LGW. Either someone is the greatest player of all time or they suck worse than anyone has ever sucked in the history of sucking. :P

But after two 97 point seasons, and two 87 point seasons before those, he's on pace for about 60. That's a sizeable drop in one year.

For a guy who - IIRC - most on here expected to put up 100 pts this year? Yup.

Datysuk gets paid to rack up points. Not play well. Draper and Maltby get paid to play well. Big difference. Would anyone say Heatley or Ovechkin played well if they didn't score any points? No. These high paid forwards get paid to score. Datysuk isn't scoring, and thus, isn't playing well. Doesn't matter if he wins 100% of his draws, and has 5 take aways. Scoring is what matters, and for guys like Datysuk and Zetterberg, if you don't get points, you aren't playing well.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, but 1: Datsyuk is getting points (just not as many as we'd like) and 2: Datsyuk does a hell of a lot more good when not scoring points than Ovechking or Heatley does.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the last 2 seasons were the best you will ever see of Pavel Datsyuk. He has peaked. Players in general Peak in 27-31 age, and he is going according to the Norm. Thats not to say he isn't capable of more than this season, as he definatly is but I cant see Dats ever breaking 95 points again, maybe 90. With that being said I still expect him to eventually bounce back and be a great ppg player who is great defensivily, but physically he just seems run down. I am sure his supposed problems with his wife takes a toll also. He'll come around eventually, but we will never see the 2008 Datsyuk (I.E. most complete player in the world) ever again.

If you are right, then I am going to be very upset. :(.

Superstars are supposed to put a team on their back in times of trouble.

That's what separates good players from superstar players.

This season, Datsyuk and Zetterberg have shown that they're no longer playing like superstar players.

They're not in the same class as a Malkin, Crosby or Ovechkin as others have claimed in the past. Those guys can carry a team.

I hate to say it, but prior to this season I was thinking Z and D were in the same class as the Big 3. I hate to say it but I think I was wrong. :(.
