Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted January 22, 2010 Keep in mind JJ is only 23. He would still be in Grand Rapids developing if he was part of the Wings system. Cleary was already around 26 when he came to the Wings and had played parts of 7 NHL seasons. They're very different situations. I wouldn't call JJ a fully developed player yet by any means. He still has a ton of time to mature and live up to hype and potential. And he still has a ton of time to flop. The Wings don't need a gamble like him. The Wings, if Lidstrom retires, will have the money to find a much better defenseman.
Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted January 22, 2010 (edited) at first when i read the link, i was like WOW, who the hell does this Lombardi guy think he is. but then i went to the source, and read the entire article. Lombardi justified his statements, and since I don't know Jack Johnson personally, all I can say is, you listen to your boss. You listen to the guy who has been made chief, in a business that you work, in the freaking NHL! I don't know how it went down, but when it comes to young "superstars" you probably have to show him tape, and be patient with the kid. Show him examples of what he did wrong, and what he did right. Hell, give him the tapes of our captian, good ol #5 and say... try to do what he does, then show him tape of Konstatinov and say try to do what he does. Mix in your own stuff, and there you go. but you can't just blast a kid in the media and expect him change his ways, which i don't think Lombardi did. growing pains, reminds me of when Bowman came to town and had to show Stevie the "light". holler back. Tony I did the same and agree. Everyone in this thread should do the same. After reading it it doesn't sound like Lombardi wants to get rid of him at all. http://frozenroyalty.net/2010/01/20/dean-l...raft-belatedly/ Edited January 22, 2010 by Howard He Do It?! Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted January 22, 2010 If a trade can be done for cheap the Wing's would be fools not to do it. He is still young and has tons of upside, and a deal would most likely be low risk, potentially high reward, I.E. a Kenny Holland Special. eklund (hockeybuzz) has this as e4 .. johnson to wings God damn it, and I thought we actually had a decent chance to get him too ... ******* eklund. It's hilarious reading stuff like this when many people on this board aren't willing to give Ericsson even one season to get adjusted to the NHL game. Johnson's had more than 150 games to get accustomed to the NHL and he's still struggling. Just imagine how fast he'd become a whipping boy on LGW...

I would not trade Ericsson or Stuart either, though. I'm impressed that you understand that 23 is young. It must seem ancient to you.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 I don't see it happening but would do it if the price is right obviously. I don't trade Stuart, one doesn't he have a NTC, and he's been our best D-man for most of the year. it would take roster player(s) to get him probably and thinking ahead to next year, I wouldn't want to. redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 I dunno, I guess Im one of the few who thinks johnson could still be great player. By the replies it seems like most are writing him off. I think eric is a bit overrated on this board.... but I still love the guy, and no I wouldn't trade stewie he's been our best this year I forgot about him somehow

StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 kindl would probably be involved I could probably live with that, depending on whatelse was involved of course. I don't want a current roster player but especially a d-man cause I have a feeling Lidstrom might retire so if they could get Johnson and not lose anyone currently on D then next year if Lids retired any combo of Kronwall - Stuart Johnson - Rafalski Ericsson - ?? redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 Wings could turn this guy around easily... Exactly, thats why I would welcome him with open arms. Stewie bounced around, never lived up to his hype, but he has been great since he came to the wings and has found a home here
Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted January 22, 2010 If you read my post you'd see I said "IF", as in IF Lombardi would put him on the trade block, Ken Holland should give him a call. I understand that. I am just saying that Johnson is not on the block and probably won't be. I also state that for the others reading this thread, Lombardi speaks very highly of Johnson and believes that he can develop into a top defenseman.
McAwesome 754 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 (edited) I can realistically see Jack Johnson developing into the same kind of defenseman as Brad Stuart, albeit with more offensive upside. He has all the physical tools, and he's young enough that he could be taught to play defense in the NHL. If there was a serious offer made that wouldn't cost too much, I would be pleased to bring JMFJ on board. That being said, I was very surprised to read Lombardi's comments about the Michigan program and Red Berenson in particular. His observations about individual players aside, to throw an entire program (and one of the most respected coaches in college hockey) under the bus because one of your players has had problems with on-ice IQ is a questionable move. Pride aside, Jack was right to respond the way he did, and if this exchange ends up souring his relationship with Kings brass, then maybe it's for the best. Let him get moved to an organization where he will be allowed to develop and learn to play the position without having his boss pull this kind of stunt. edit: spelling Edited January 22, 2010 by McAwesome

Johnson-Rafalski would be a disaster. Although Rafalski has been better on defense lately, he is not the strongest defender in the world. Same goes for Johnson. The Wings should take their time and develop Ericsson before they turn to another defenseman needing re-tooling. Edited January 22, 2010 by Howard He Do It?!
