"Gordie Howe hat trick"

Non-idiots know and understand that the term "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" came to be not because Howe racked up tons of GHHTs, but because Howe was a tough, physical (and often dirty) player who could score with the best of them. The term does not mislead or decieve and ought not be called "fallacious".

I think most people are aware he didn't have a pile of them himself.

It's still an appropriate name, as micah suggested.

We're not going to start calling them "Shanahan Hat Tricks". Sorry.

The other thing is they were not as liberal with calling fighting majors back then - and most ended up being called as roughing.

You won't find too many players back in the Original 6 Era that had more than a handful of "fights" a year.

This. The fact is that Gordie probably had tons of Gordie Howe Hatties, hence the name. However, the officiating was simply a lot different back then.

You mean it was consistent? :hehe:

Gordie was great at scoring, but was also tough enough and brave enough to fight.

Considering that he is best known for his scoring prowess, I think it makes sense that the GHHT has 2 parts scoring and 1 part toughness.

I also think that it is an honour to have something like that named after him.

Funny I actually do call them Shanahan hat tricks to myself. I wish he was still a Red Wing.
