I wish I could get paid on potential. I think we all do.

I'm not going to rehash any arguments here, but the thing that I am really wanting to see is 2 1/2 years from now when this contract is up.......we'll see then if it was worth it. (I know that some of you feel this way now).

At the risk of getting flamed, I'd like to know why certin people think Filppula is redundant on this team. In the system that the Red Wings plae, the center is a playmaker in the offensive zone, and essentially a 3rd defenseman in the defensive zone, and whether he plays on the 2nd or 3rd line, he fills that role quite well. I am not saying I would like to see him score more goals, of course I would, he is my favorite current Red Wing, but I do not think 3 Million is overpaying for what he brings to this team and more importantly, what he can bring to the team if he continues to perform at his current level, goals being the ONLY exception.

theres a huge difference between the past and the future: One has been done, while the other might be done. see the difference?

That only goes so far though, Gordie Howe put up 103 points in 76 games back in 1968-69 but even though he has done it in the past I wouldn't pay him like a 103 point player in the present. The might be done is incredibly relevant in determining a players salary. For example on the list was Mike Modano (who I have always liked) but his what has been done in the past is not very likely to be replicated in what he will do in the future. Modano has had many 80+ point seasons and even one 90+ season but it is incredibly unlikely that he will have anything like that in the future. Flip is playing well (more PPG than guys like Modano) and was signed in anticipation that he will continue to improve, Kenny thought it was a good gamble. I think so far he is right, Flip was playing great before he got hurt and has played well since returning and he has the probability of continued improvement rather than regression.

We do with specific-OTJ training and specialized training. They're investing their future in you to produce and not leave ;).

And you don't need to rehash any of your arguments because the majority don't agree with you and it's not even close.

Every player in every sport is paid, at least in part, on potential. Players have to sign contracts before they can play. That means they are paid for what they are expected to do. Those expectations may be based on past performance, or expert analysis of potential, or a combination thereof. Neither is a guarantee of future success.

The answer for me is Yes. The guy just seems like he is not all there yet in terms of his game.

And he can't finish. There's that.

He's not being paid to be a great finisher...the people who say he's overpaid (by the way you are in the minority) act like he should be netting 25 goals a year or something, guess what, guys who consistently put up goal numbers like that at his age are making a hell of a lot more than 3 million...in the offensive zone he is a SET UP man meaning he is best at setting up others for goals...just look at the magic he worked last year in the playoffs when he had bona fide talent playing with him..here's a thought, put him with one of our top goal scorers (like any other team in the NHL would do) such as Z Dats or Franzen for a season and then make a judgement....he just hasn't been used nearly effectively as he could have been, it's like an NFL team signing Peyton Manning and then running the Wing-T offense. As far as defense goes he more than holds his own, so lay off!

2 more overpaid assists for Val.

Only two points tonight? What a slacker.

HES NOT A 3 PPG PLAYER, OBVIOUSLY WE'RE OVERPAYING HIM

Wait, how many points did Datsyuk have? Lidstrom? Oh yeah, less than Fil. My bad.

But those passes weren't anything special, Brett freaking Lebda could've made those passes blindfolded. Flip is never going to score 40 goals in a season so he's worthless and redundant. :sarcasm: (sarcasm smiley)
