Wow, I had no idea the difference would be so huge.

In all fairness, I do think last night's goal skewed things a bit, but it looks like the consensus is that Lebda has to go.

I think they have about the same value to a team roster-wise, small defensemen that have moderate offensive potential, Lebda has better speed but tends to pinch and play out of position, Meech more of a positional player, but for a team trying to shed salary, the player making more money for the same role is more expendable.

That being said, I'd prefer to have Janik called up as the 7th Dman and deal Lebda AND Meech, but I don't see that happening either.

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Stuart-Kronwall

Lilja-Ericsson

Janik

Looks like a playoff-caliber defensive corps.

EDIT:

Which would you prefer to stay as the 7th d-man once Lilja is back?

Brett Lebda [ 1 ] ** [7.14%]

Derek Meech [ 13 ] ** [92.86%]

Total Votes: 15

Good old LGW knows how to add about as well as these two know how to play.

Pretty sure it counts the null votes as votes.

Meech's goal yesterday will probably skew this poll

Meech's talent level being above Lebda's is what skews this poll.

While Lebda has the big-game experience, Meech seems to be more consistent *when he's played consistently.* If he gets shuffled in and out of the lineup its a wash IMO. When they both play regularly, Meech is more consistent....and has more upside.

Meech is terrible, but to a lesser extent than Lebda. Meech always seems to be trying really hard out there, even if his skillset is low. Last night's goal was pretty flukey but he worked hard for it. There have been at least a few games this year where I thought Meech looked quite good.

Statistical comparison:

Lebda gives slightly more hits and blocks per ATOI (however, its so close as to almost not matter)

Lebda commits less giveaways with greater TOI

Over the course of 3 seasons, Lebda provides more offense per TOI

Meech takes less penalties and less dumb penalties per TOI

Meech can act as a reserve forward

Meech looks more comfortable on the powerplay

Lebda (amazingly) has consistently higher +/-

Meech has possibly more upside and offensive consistency with consistent playing time

Lebda makes (slightly) more

Kinda a wash, but seeing as both of these guys are backup with a full roster, I'll take Meech with his greater versatility and less taking of dumb penalties. It's close, though. Lebda probably has more trade value to teams going for a cup, so that adds another reason to keep Meech. Basically a wash, though.

Edit: Even though I take Meech, I'm voting Lebda just to make it the closer poll that it should be.

I would like Lebda to leave... I don't think either of them are as quality as they need to be, so my choice was made because I hate Notre Dame and Lebda came from there :)

haha.

I voted Meech > Lebda for the reasons that this will be Lebda's 5th season with the big club playing at least 46 games each season and there's really not been a heck of a lot of improvement (imo), this is Meech's 3rd season playing 30-41 games and may very well still have an undiscovered upside.

That and Meech is cheaper.

I agree that Meech is a better and slightly cheaper option but playing 15 less games and less TOI is not good when they have basically (although 23% worse) the same +/-. With more games and more ice time the trend is that Meech's +/- would be worse than it is.

meech's +/- is that low because of one really bad game

I voted for Lebda but the bottom line is that we are talking about probably the most insignificant position on an NHL team in a 7th defenseman and when it comes down to it they should probably take Meech because he is cheaper...neither one of them is going to be counted on for much other then not screwing up so i guess take Meech for the slight gain in cap room....all in all i wish we could go back and keep Quincey, obviously

Meech should stay. Lebda should go. I think if Meech was given the run in the team that Lebda has had, he would prove more valuable.

The fact that Lebda has played so many games, including playoff games might give him some sort of trade value (*2* bags of pucks please!).

Trade Lebda, Leino and waive May. I know some people want to give Leino another chance, but his 800k salary makes my mind up, especially considering the job Eaves and Miller have been doing on just 500k.

Back on topic, keep Meech.

:siren:

except you might run into a stumbling block there. 2 bags worth is an okay quantity, but that second bag to carry them in might be the deal breaker.

just being realistic...

Lebda's god awful play last night just further cemented this sentiment... don't get me wrong, Meech's wasn't a lot better, or the team as a whole... but there were several times he got in WAY to deep on the play and Dats or Z had to bail him out back checking that stuck out like sore thumbs...
