Red Wings' Tomas Holmstrom leaves practice early, questionable for Tuesday; Niklas Kronwall still out

DETROIT -- Update from Monday's Detroit Red Wings practice:

Forward Tomas Holmstrom (bruised left knee) was on the ice briefly at the start of practice but couldn't push off, so he left. He said he will skate Tuesday morning in St. Louis before a decision is made on whether he can play against the Blues.

“I couldn’t really push away hard,'' Holmstrom said. "It’s better, for sure, so day-to-day.’’

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall (left knee) practiced but said he won't play Tuesday. He is waiting for a new knee brace to arrive, one that will better support his MCL. He said aiming to return Thursday against San Jose.

“I felt pretty good out there, really good actually,'' Kronwall said. "The new (brace) hopefully will make the MCL even more solid.’’

Forward Drew Miller (bruised ankle) will play Tuesday. Forward Patrick Eaves (sprained ankle) did not practice and won't play. He is listed as day-to-day.

Forward Johan Franzen is set to return to the lineup Tuesday. He has been out since Oct. 8, when he suffered a torn left ACL.

Here are the lines they skated with in practice, though coach Mike Babcock said this isn't necessarily what he'll do in the game. And it won't be, if Holmstrom plays:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen

Bertuzzi-Filppula-Cleary

Draper-Helm-May

Maltby-Miller-Williams

Jimmy Howard will start in goal.

Also, newly acquired defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen cleared waivers and was assigned to Grand Rapids (AHL).

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Franzen

Just seeing that line in print makes me excited. I know Mule isn't going to step in and score hat-tricks and dominate games, but still, that line will scare opponents more than any other line we've been able to ice all season.

Here come the real Detroit Red Wings, this team is gonna destroy everyone come March, I'm calling it now, there is no way the Wings are gonna miss the playoffs.

hmm. yeah m gonna have to go ahead sort of...disagree with you there. one player returning will not turn this entire team into a goal scoring force. Even if he scores at least a ppg for the rest of the way (which is unlikely).

ding ding - 2 points for you!

One of the best shows on TV right now... pure brilliance...

Love that show.

And staying on topic, let's hope Franzen can spark the offense...because if he doesn't, we're sunk.

Draper-Helm-May???

lol I thought the same thing when i saw that, think it will probably be draper/helm/williams eventually at some point in the game

In other news good to see tolly pass through waivers. Hopefully one of lebda/meech or both are gone by the end of the week to make lilja and tolly 6th/7th d men.

well... long term, yes, over the next couple weeks, no - we can't expect him to just come back and dominate after almost 5 months off...

I actually think Lilja's return will have a greater impact than Franzen's, because of the way it will shore up our third pairing, and lessen the load on the top 2 pairings... ESPECIALLY the PK

I would imagine if anything, they'll keep Meech and he'll be number 7 - less cap hit and he already knows the system... plus, Tollefsen would need to pas through re-entries and THEN we could lose him and STILL be on the hook for some of his cap... no thanks... there are at least 2 other guys I would bring up before him...

good point, last thing wings need is for someone to claim tolly on re-entry waivers have to pay for some of that remaining 600K contract... Last things the wings need is to have salary go up with all these people coming back lol

tolly still an upgrade over meech IMO

Skill alone, I agree, but the learning curve of our system and the cap hit make Meech more valuable on the active roster in my mind...

I hope they can re-sign Tollefsen in the offseason with the mindset that he will spend another year in GR and then have a chance to earn a spot on the roster in camp...

this is what i am hoping, also can't he be called up once the rosters expand for the playoffs? (if we make it that is) be a good insurance policy to have if someone gets injured or lilja has a set back

Once the rosters are expanded, my understanding is that we can bring him up, but he'd still be exposed to waivers, however, the cap is already accounted for by that point - so we wouldn't be on the hook for any cap space
