b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted February 9, 2010 He wanted more money and term than the Wings or any other team were willing to give him so he went back to Russia. I liked him in his short stint with the Wings, good stay-at-home presence and decently physical, still wouldn't have given him what he was asking for at the time, I think somewhere around $4mil a season if I remember right? Rick Zombos Ghost 82 Report post Posted February 9, 2010 (edited) he got paid a ton to play in Russia. stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted February 9, 2010 I would rather have him for $4M then Raf for $6M so you'd give up a cup in 08? because without Raffi, we don't have that cup. period. He isn't having his best year, but he is still a damn good offensive dman - they are different styles, so the comparison is pretty moot anyway

AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted February 9, 2010 When is everyone going to get off Rafalski? He got paid what was a good amount at the time, he was a free agent, took a discount to come here, could have made more somewhere else. That was pre-cap money. He got paid what was a good amount at the time, he was a free agent, took a discount to come here, could have made more somewhere else. That was pre-cap money. It wasn't, he was signed in '08, but in any event, he was paid fairly. Defensemen that can play 25 minutes a night and put up 55-60 points make the money Rafalski makes. People just have an unrealistic idea of what a big money Dman is supposed to be from watching Lidstrom all these years.

RedWingAbner 13 Report post Posted February 9, 2010 How much would a defenseman earn if he put up 60 points with Nick Lidstrom....and didn't have the physical presence of a goldfish....and understood what "fronting" someone in your own end meant.....and wasn't remarkably lazy when clearing pucks/playing the powerplay? Brian Rafalski is the most overpaid player on this team, bar none.

What discount did he take? He got $30M over 5 years during the salary cap era. He was a knee-jerk reaction to Schneider leaving; most people realize now why New Jersey let him go. Put Lebda with Lidstrom during the prime years and we'd be talking about how Lebda's 50 point seasons were awesome, but we wish he'd be better defensively. Brian Rafalski=Brett Lebda. At least Lebda makes absolutely nothing. I'd keep Lebda over Rafalski, and I HATE Brett Lebda as a hockey player.
