NHL GM's upset at Phaneuf trade

NHL GMs feel they could've given Flames more for Phaneuf

By ERIC FRANCIS, QMI Agency

While both the Maple Leafs and the Flames accomplished plenty in the seven-player trade involving Dion Phaneuf last week, obviously not every-one's happy about it.

Amongst those critical of the deal are a number of GMs around the league who were unaware Phaneuf was available and wished they'd been given a chance to offer up more than the Leafs did.

The general feeling amongst these executives is Flames GM Darryl Sutter didn't come close to maximizing his returns on a deal that brought four players to Calgary.

Either way, such criticism points to how quickly and quietly Sutter moved Phaneuf from untouchable status to logical trade bait.

Now more notes, quotes and anecdotes from a sports world wondering what Flames fans plan on doing now with the thousands of mounted Phaneuf prints given as season-ticket holder gifts last month.

GM's upset that they weren't doing their jobs would be a more appropriate title.

Agreed.

Seems like some whining on these phantom GM's part.

Here's how it's done:

If you want Phaneuf, you make an inquiry.

Your inquiry is either rebuffed*, or met with "Make me an offer."

You make an offer.**

Offer is either accepted or denied***.

Upon approval, trade is consumated.

* sometimes, no does not mean no.

** NOTE TO GMs: you sometimes have to give, to get. sometimes more, sometimes less.

*** Try harder if you want the player. Include a bag of pucks.

Although, I think we all would if we could have somehow swapped Lebda//Leino/Kindl/pick for Phaneuf.

Sutter would have been nuts to turn a deal like that down.

Would Fil have fit into Calgary's playing style?

Not sure about that one... I'm leaning towards no, but Jokinnen wasn't exactly a tough guy - they also shipped his butt out of town. I think Flips has the upside that would make him attractive in a trade. You could also throw Ericcson into that category. They are probably our most valuable trade options for other teams.

I wouldn't want Phaneuf here unless we gave up very little for him. All I've heard is he is a lockerroom cancer and plus he is a terrible defensmen. We have plenty of only offensive minded D-Man on this team. Would rather we trade for a stay at home shut down physical D-Man.

....and plus he is a terrible defensmen.

Terrible? I know his game is offense, but I never thought he was that bad on D. Is he?

We're not producing much offense, though. ;)

If other GM's didnt know about it then Sutter didn't do HIS JOB either. If Kenny ever trades an assest, I want the Deal that helps us most.
