cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted February 11, 2010 From ctv olympics dot ca: In an emotional interview with Pierre McGuire during Wednesday night's NHL on TSN broadcast, Team Canada head coach Mike Babcock discussed Canada's chances at the upcoming Vancouver Olympic Games. Babcock stressed the importance of teamwork and how players would have to set aside their egos for the greater good in order to capture gold. The man who led the Detroit Red Wings to the Stanley Cup just two years ago doesn't believe that personal agendas will be a problem. "Every guy I've talked to, and I've talked to them all now, has said to a man: 'I'll do whatever you want,'" Babcock told McGuire. "That's pretty straight forward to me." ... titanium2 867 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 i dont know Olympic hockey has never been popular in USA minus the miracle on ice team. Oh yeah, I forgot that the US is in the tournament too. With the way that the luck has been this year, Kronwall will probably go for an open ice hit on Datsyuk for a big collision that injures them both. Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Zetterberg and Franzen all skate to their aid and then trip over each other; tearing up each of their knees. Meanwhile in the USA versus Finland match up, Filppula will probably take a shot that hits Rafalski right in the jaw and then bounce back directly into Fil's previously injured wrist. And just so the luck remains thorough, Sergei Kolosov will probably go for a big hit and then end up limping off the ice like Chris Pronger did when he tried to hit Stevie. Oh, and Team Canada will tune out Babcock for his inability to make wise decisions.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted February 16, 2010 From Toronto Star : Let the second guessing begin. This time, it's not about who has been selected to play for the Canadian men's hockey team at these 2010 Winter Olympics, but rather the way in which those selected are being deployed. For months, hordes of pundits, analysts and insiders have been chewing over the Canadian roster, subjecting the choices facing coach Mike Babcock to the same scrutiny one might expect for a national political campaign. Still, Babcock produced two intriguing surprises yesterday that nobody saw coming and immediately sparked debate. First, Roberto Luongo will get the opening-day start against Norway in the rink that he calls home during the NHL season, albeit one renamed Canada Hockey Place for the purposes of this enormously hyped tournament. ... ... The second surprise unveiled by Babcock on Monday was having Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, a player who wasn't even invited to the summer camp in Calgary, skating alongside centre Sidney Crosby and Rick Nash on what is expected to be Canada's top line. ... Guest zackmorris Report post Posted February 16, 2010 I have no doubt that he gives Canada their best chance to win as a coach. He's just what they need-no bulls***, no games, just do your damn job. He's perfect for keeping a group of egos in check. I'd love to see Sid go whining and get chewed out.
cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted February 23, 2010 Now, Coach Babcock has got himself in a huge situation regarding the goaltending; from Toronto Star : ... Not only did Babcock call out Brodeur for his play in a 5-3 loss to the United States on Sunday, he then told Roberto Luongo he would be in goal for the qualification match against Germany a few hours after the game but waited to deliver the news to Brodeur, the winningest goalie in the history of the sport, until before practice on Monday. ... ... So it's gold or bust with the Vancouver Canucks netminder, a sizeable risk given that outside of some fine work at the world championships the 30-year-old has never defined himself as a winner. ... And, the most interesting observation: ... Anytime Babcock has had success – the 1997 world juniors, the 2002 Stanley Cup final with the Anaheim Ducks, the 2008 and '09 Cup finals with Detroit – he has identified a starting goalie and rode him hard. He didn't pull Marc Denis in '97 when that team struggled, or J.S. Giguere in '02, or Chris Osgood in either of the past two playoff seasons. But with Team Canada, he's gone to a different playbook. It had better work.

titanium2 867 Report post Posted February 24, 2010 If he pulls this off and wins the Gold then that I don't think any of us should expect anything less when he gets back to work for the Wings. Is that unfair?

Hasek was identified as the starter for the 2008 playoffs and was pulled in favor of Osgood when things went south. This is almost the same thing with Brodeur and Luongo.
