Trading Kronwall?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Okay, first off I am not advocating this but want to get peoples reactions to this. Should the Red Wings trade Kronwall? With our cap struggles, is Kronwall untouchable? My reasoning is that if Kronwall was traded for a younger defenseman with skill would you do it? The only reason I pose this question is the frequency in which Kronwall seems to injure himself. Would it perhaps be wise to trade him while his value is quite high? Hypothetically, say trade Kronwall for Drew Doughty. Would you do it?

Again, I reiterate, not advocating it, just asking for people's reactions. I know some feel that he is the heir apparent to Nick Lidstrom. But, I don't think that he has the durability to be counted on in the same way Lidstrom has been counted on. His skill level is quite high but not quite Lidstrom level (I can agree that it is possibly no one will ever be on Lidstrom's level). His defensive play and effectiveness rely on him playing a bit of a reckless style which has been detrimental to his health. And his hockey sense and hockey IQ are maybe slightly above average.

So please, weigh in, and tell me what you think.

I love kronwall... But.

Kronwall for Doughty oh yes but it's not possible.. it's like Kronwall+Filppula+1st round pick.. considering his potential,, current upside and his young age.

I just threw out Doughty as an example. I know it wouldn't be a straight one for one swap. I'm just saying Kronwall + ? for young talented d-man + ? And having Kronwall and the other young defenseman as core pieces of a trade

i don't think we should trade kroner big nick and rafalski are coming to the end of there roads and lil nick is going to be our guy. It's hard to find a guy that can put up points like he did last season 51PTS in 80GP and that was on the second pairing. Also a guy that can put the fear into the other teams with his big hits. I would much rather move stuart over kronwall just my opinion.

no i like him too much, plus the swedish spirit would be gone, doughty wouldnt have it. i would rather create our own young players than get them from another club, also if you notice usually young talents are not traded, only middle age and older. maybe this summer will be a change as nicklas backstrom is now a free agent maybe!

Strange this is brought up. Last night I dreamt that the Wings traded Kronner to Florida for Ballard and Vokoun. Don't know what that was all about.

EDIT: Nothing like taking on 10 million dollars in salary, eh?

Kronwall will be good for two more seasons atleast, i'm sure he will demand around phaneuf money or just under that when his current contract is up...that's how it works, right now he has an awesome contract perhaps underpaid but it's all good for us right :)

I doubt it. This organization is one thing, sometimes to a fault, and that is loyal. Rafi, Stuart, and Kronwall's contracts all expire in the same year. I suspect that Kronwall will be the centerpiece of the D corps the following season, unless Lidstrom is still playing at a high level. Depending on the salary cap at that time, I think Kronner will receive a raise, somewhere in th 5 mill range on his next contract. I could also see one of two scenarios. He either signs a Z or Mule type deal or signs a deal that puts him at the age of 34 when it is up so they aren't tied to a cap hit if he retires later. Of course, who knows what the CBA will look like in 2 years...it could be completely different.

I can't see kronwall asking for that much of a raise maybe to 5 max, ive noticed that guys that are drafted and brought up in the orginization usually aren't greedy its the ones we trade/sign that are the ones that typically ask for way more then they should get. But the guys that have been in the system darfted and what not like the system and want to stay.

I really think Kronwall is grossly under appreciated here. If we can get a young star player (like Kovalchuk caliber), I'd be willing to send him as part of the package. But unless we're getting something really good in return, he's essential to our success, both now and more importantly in the future.
