2010 Winter Olympics - Russia vs Latvia

The officiating in that game was absurd. As if Russia needed any help to beat Latvia, they got 3 completely bogus powerplays and Kovalchuk was able to maul guys to the ice with the free hand at will. Add a couple missed high sticking calls, blatant uncalled trips and a clear boarding by Skrastins and I'd say the refs botched this one pretty good.

On another note: does anybody know why Bykov isn't using Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Semin, Malkin or Kovalchuk on the powerplay? I understand him wanting to use a group with some chemistry, but their powerplay was like 1 for 8 wasn't it? I'm hoping for Canada's sake that foolish pride is causing Bykov to try to prove a point about the KHL by giving Morozov, Radulov, etc all the prime minutes. In a tourney format where goal differential matters I just can't fathom the reason to have all that firepower on the bench.

because it was a meaningless game. Just like the other two played today. These games are much more impiortant to establish some chemistry rather than run up the score a little bit.

Meanwhile I do not see any problem with Bykov giving considerable amount of time to Morozov and Radulov. After all, Radulov was solid first liner for Nashville just one season ago. Once he jumped to KHL I see so many "try to prove a point about the KHL by giving Morozov, Radulov, etc all the prime minutes". Consider it a bit differently: Bykov gives some solid minutes to legitimate first line winger of mediocre NHL franchise just like Babcock gives some valuable time to Rick Nash or Patrice Bergeron.

I'm a Wing fan, I know horrid officiating when I see it, and you're right. It was bad. All in all the games today, all of the mens games at least, have been called pretty poorly.

Wow, is it ******* impossible to see highlights from other teams besides Canada? The only person with the Russian game won't let me view it because I'm not American. This coverage is ******* garbage.

After 30 minutes, I've found it..

Not American. Misread that one. Well, for those Americans that want to see it.

I wish CBC won the bid for Canadian coverage over CTV. I get CBC since I am close to the border and they actually showed events live, unlike NBC. There is no Olympic coverage worse than NBC's.

I have to be honest, there were moments where even Latvia was making Russia's defense look quite weak, and for all the boasting of their stacked offense Russia's PP was terrible in this game for all their chances. Could really end up haunting them when they start playing better teams - wouldn't be the first time a Russian team that's looked unstoppable on paper came up short in the Olympics.

Pics from the Russian practice before the Olympics

Pavel to Nabokov: "Shall I do a penalty shot on you?" "No thanks, Pasha, the entire Youtube community is already going LULZ over some of the stuff you did on me".

1166633_img_1970.jpg

"I have to do a penalty shot on somebody" thought Datsyuk to himself.

The real captain for Team Russia is also a good spokesman. Glad to see you again, Sergei.
