Sick of hearing Sidney Crosby's name

Last night on NBC they showed a video on Ovechkin highlighting how intense and outwardly emotional he is with his goal celebrations etc. After the video NBC moron #1 asked NBC moron #2 what other player he would compare to Ovechkin in that regard, without hesitation #2 said "CROSBY!" Then Jeremy Roenick (yes Jeremy freaking Roenick was the voice of reason here) tried to point out that that response made no sense because Crosby isn't known for that all and #2 just rambles on about how Crosby in beating Ovechkin 1-0 in stanley cups and thats all that matters and therefore Crosby is superior.

I think my point is that NBC acts like they are the only two hockey players in the world. In that example he could have picked any current or former player from the NHL and he goes with Crosby. IMO they talk about both of them way too much.

They are indisputably the best two hockey players in the world right now. Not such a stretch for the media to focus their attention on two players who are as dominant as they are.

It's NBC so are we really surprised. I turned on my TV in the middle of the second intermission last night after I got home and the third word I hear is Crosby. NBC loves to suck Crosby's balls, and the NHL loves to suck NBC's balls. Therefore the NHL also likes to suck Crosby's balls.

I mean, what is every single game of the week on NBC? It's either:

-Big Bad Old Red Wings vs. Pens

-Pens vs. Caps (Will Ovechkin ever beat Crosby?)

-Pens vs. Flyers (Division rivals that are just NEVER good enough to beat the Pens at anything important)

-Red Wings vs. Blackhawks (NBC's second favorite team and backup plan in case the Pens don't make it far in the playoffs)

and then occasionally they will throw in the Rangers.

I know there are new Crosby threads like every week here, but I don't get why people are getting so mad about it. Isn't the point of an internet forum to vent your frustrations and share opinions? No one pointed a gun at anyone's head and forced them to read it. Some of you guys act like what people say on the internet is a huge deal and the end of the world.

It's also not much of a stretch to request to talk about other players just as good/nearly as good on a somewhat consist basis. Thornton, Getzlaf, Hossa, Lidstrom, etc. You would think there are 12 Sidney Crosbys out on the ice with the attention he gets. The Kid gets mentioned so much I'm now often wondering if my last name is Crosby. If I played a drinking game revolved around taking a shot every time Crosby's name gets mentioned, I'd be dead by now from overdose. It's absurd.

So everyone knows how many teams play on NBC this year:

Red Wings: 5

Penguins: 5

Flyers: 5 (Including Winter Classic)

Blackhawks: 4

Bruins: 4 (Including Winter Classic)

Washington: 3

Rangers: 2

Hurricanes: 2

Colorado: 1

Buffalo: 1

Tampa Bay: 1

Dallas: 1

The bias isn't towards a specific team, but it is towards American teams located in the Eastern side of the country. The Wings and Pens are focused more because of their large fanbase and the Stanley Cup "rivalry" between the two (they had the same number of NBC games last year as well). No Sharks games. No Ducks games. No Kings games. Few sunbelt expansion teams (Thrashers being the exception with a game against Pittsburgh and Lightning also playing against Pittsburgh. Carolina with two games, one against Buffalo). No Jackets games. No Wild games.

The bias is in favor of the heavily marketed east for a reason. I don't like it but from a business standpoint it makes sense.

SWF: I don't notice them talking about Crosby much (Camera pans to him on the bench or on the ice 80% of the time between plays however) but I wasn't really paying much attention to the game anyway.

Chelios didn't shake hands with any of the Ducks players in '07 while Crosby at least shook with about half of the Wings....just saying

Big difference. Cheli's team lost. I'm not excusing it but it's a hell of a lot easier to be a gracious winner than it is to be a gracious loser.

Crosby shook hands after the interview he had.

He didn't flat out refuse or just skate away when the Wings were lining up. He was already talking in an interview and immediately went to the handshake line after it was over. He is a young captain enjoying winning the Stanley Cup and was asked questions about it. Says more about the media than it does about Crosby.

Ok. I'll dispute that. They are the most hyped up two guys but according to TSN Ovie is the best player RIGHT NOW. Sid is 8th. So no, this is not indisputable. NBC has people brain washed even to the point of thinking that Ovie and Crosby are the 2 best players in the league.

If we don't play the Pen's in back to back SCF nobody on this board gives 2 f***s about Crosby and how he is being marketed.

Anyways, I hated him but now I'm passed it. I got over it. We aren't playing him in the finals this year.

Am I the only one that doesn't quite understand this "face of the NHL" thing? Everyone talks about it like it's a fact and he's listed as such. I doesn't understand it at all, because I don't see anyone really being the face of the league. Maybe it's different in the US than here in Canada, but from a media perspective, I don't see more mention of Crosby than other players, in fact, I see a lot more of Ovechkin than I do of Crosby.

Take yesterday as a clear example. Just before the start of the Canada game, yes, you would have saw stuff on Crosby, but also on several other players. The Russia game, they mentioned, coming up, would be Ovechkin and the rest of team Russia against Latvia and then after the commercial, they show a quick video of him and no mention or even photos of anyone else on the team.

Fast forward to this morning and reading the game recaps. On TSN, the headline from the Canada game was something like: Opening Salvo and the rest of the recap mentions chemistry and Crosby's line, along with a few of the other lines, etc., but makes no mention at of Crosby's 3 assists, didn't even mention that he had any points. The Russia game recap on the other hand, the headline was "Ovechkin scores twice....blah, blah" - this, while 4 or 5 other teammates also had 2 points in the game and another guy on the team also had 2 goals.

Not sure I'm seeing how Crosby is shoved down people's throats anymore than someone like Ovechkin.

toby91 makes a very good point. Watching on CTV yesterday it was definitely about the team as a whole and not Crosby.

I disagree. He should have made it a priority to shake hands and have the interview afterwards. I don't think he did it on purpose or meant to snub anybody but it shows a lack of judgement/immaturity on his part. He made a mistake. Fine, everybody makes mistakes. What bothers me is that he did nothing to make amends. A phone call the following week to Lids to apologize for the mistake would have gone a long way.

But he followed up his mistake with a denial. I'm thinking that if the situation were reversed Nick would have apologized.

As they say, it takes a big man to admit he was wrong. Evidently Sid isn't that guy.

TSN power rankings are bulls***. Mike Green is number 2 on the list. Seriously use a new source.

Crosby and Ovechkin have been the most consistent players since the lock out(rookie year). Thornton as well maybe but he plays for SJ and nobody cares about the west. They are the 2 best in the game today.

Alternate the Staal brothers.

Crosby/Staals/Nash.

Problem solved, and the night is still Young.

I'd have to be pretty asian for Stills to sound like Staal lol

Any one else find it funny that Crosby has hardly been able to break into the top 20 in goal scoring prior to this year? You would think he would be at least top 2 every year for how much hype he gets about being the "Great One".

I'll let Datsyuk know that he can't be a great player either then.

Btw I'm loving all the Crosby tears. They sustain me.

Dumbass Disclaimer: Datsyuk plays defense

He's gonna say, "Crosby plays defense too. He backchecks hard."

You're gonna say, "He doesn't play defense as well as Datsyuk. There is more to defense than backchecking. It's also about anticipation of the play in your own zone. For example, the goal Stuart scored against PIT earlier this season is one example where Crosby just didn't react well enough on defense."

I could make a pretty solid case that Crosby isnt even the best player on his team, let alone 2nd best in the League.

Malkin is more important to the Pens than Crosby is. That's why Malkin won the Conn Smythe and he didn't. If Malkin was not playing that series, I think we would have beaten them. That's what an MVP is supposed to be.

The only reason more people know Crosby's ugly mug and name as opposed to anyone else in the league is because he's being marketed as if he were Coca-Cola. Think about it - Coke is ubiquitous. There isn't anyone on the planet that doesn't know that logo and what product it represents. Put him in commercials, interview him constantly, talk him up during other games, stick on the cover of video games; I'm surprised he doesn't have his own clothing line and cologne by now, although give it time.

The NHL is not treating Crosby like a person, they are treating him like a product. Over-saturation of the marketplace is always a concern when you have a company or a brand pushing one product onto consumers as opposed to any other. People will get sick of that product, they will turn away from that product and move toward others. It's only a matter of time before Crosby is the NHL's version of Crystal Pepsi.

And if Crosby wasn't playing in that series then Malkin would have gone up against Zetterberg and Lidstrom, the two best defensive players in the playoffs that year. And the Pens would have also lost.

He is marketed more than any other athlete, of course. At least he doesn't have his own website like Zetterberg and Pronger do.

Of course I'm sick of hearing abot him. I'm sick of seeing the clip of him lifting the cup in the Joe. But these are things that will not change. Better get used to it. Personally I think Ovechkin is a much more appealing product and much more entertaining, but the bandwagon loves them some Sid the kid.
