Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted February 18, 2010 Dude all you have to do it watch a Pens game. Especially if they are playing the Caps..... If you are talking about the Pens home announcers, well yeah. Those two are morons. I have not once seen any reputable hockey source say that Crosby has the same talent in goal-scoring as Ovechkin, and if any of them did they would ruin their own reputation as being an "expert" on anything hockey related. All home team network announcers are homers in some way or another. Hell, on a "homer scale" of 1-10, I'd rank a solid 9 for the FSN Detroit announcers, but whatever, we all love Mickey. As much as he loves the hometown boys he calls it like he sees it for both teams. The Pens announcers are a 9 and 8, respectively. When the Caps were beating the Pens 5-3 a couple months back Steigerwald sounded like he was about to cry because of the outcome. He is terribly unprofessional. Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 19, 2010 Why not push him? Well, because he's prissy, he's immature, and he whines constantly. Nobody likes to see someone who lacks basic sportsmanship and complains rather than putting his head down, playing through the bad breaks, accepting correct penalties against he and his team, and in general not spending time trying to play the system rather than playing the game. Why push Ovechkin? Because he's a hell of a sportsman and he's none of the above.
Stiffy 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) Well, if this isn't sign of a conspiracy, I had recently cleared my browser cache and history (no, not porn, just keeping things clean) and I go to type in www.letsgo... and the Google type ahead thing fills it in with.... LETSGOPENS! Jesus H Christ, can anything related with hockey and a screen not hype the Pens! I want a melt down. I want Washington to sweep them in the playoffs and hold Crosby scoreless. Not out of hate, but fairness. Let the bright star fall so others can get attention. Edited February 19, 2010 by Stiffy
Lidstrom for life 20 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 Yes they are. Show me someone who has done what those two have in the same span of time (including this season and the playoffs). Original-Six: Crosby was hyped up as the "Next one" before his rookie year, and since then that notion has been quickly been rid of for its ridiculousness. Crosby is not going to get even close to what Gretzky did. Nobody in our lifetimes will. Also this is his placement in goal scoring since his rookie year T-12th with 39 goals T-16th with 36 goals T-64th with 24 goals (played only 53 games that year due to injury) T-20th with 33 goals T-1st (currently) with 42 goals. I don't think he is that bad when he is getting the point totals he does with the linemates he does. Shows that both he and Ovechkin perform whether or not they have quality linemates. So him being in the top 20 in goals makes him indisputably one of the top 2 players in the world? That doesn't really make sense to me. I am not saying he isn't great because he is, I am just saying he is not that much better than the Sedins/Thorntons/Heatleys/Kovalchuks/Iginlas etc of the world and I would like to see them talked about more. Thornton is the only one who is close to comparable (considering his two 90 assist seasons a couple years back). None of those players have put up the amount of points Crosby and Ovechkin have in their first four years in the NHL. Ovechkin and Crosby have identical PPG at the moment (I believe Ovechkin has a slight lead in that department at the moment). They are both game changers and have done it on a much more consistent basis than anyone else in the NHL. Neither Kovalchuck or Iginla have put up 100 points once in their careers. Heatley has done it twice in seven years. Neither Sedins have hit even 90 points. What other players other than Malkin have been able to put up consistent numbers that Ovechkin and Crosby have? Actually, Crosby has the slight lead (career wise), but ever so slight. By rounding, they are actually identical. T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 I'm watching CTV out of Vancouver and they are not pushing him any more than he deserves... No matter what you punkasses out in internet hockey BS land think, that 22 yr old kid is awesome and has the respect of Stevie Y and Mike Babcock, WHo do you think told him to get his ass out there and do it right this time for round two of the shoutout tonite against Switzerland? He always has a camera on him and always has a mic in his face and rarely says the wrong thing. I don't particularly like the kid, but my respect for him is growing. Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 My sister is a 22 year old kid and pretty damn awesome, but I don't think the whole world needs to see her face all the time. There's plenty of great young hockey players out there; Canadian, American, Russian, Swedish....the list goes on. Why aren't THEY getting the coverage that he is? Is it the language barrier? Does he have dreamy eyes? It's obnoxious the way the media fellates him at the expense of nearly everyone else currently playing. You could be watching a game between San Jose and Atlanta and they will somehow work a Sidney Crosby spot into it. Guarantee. It's overkill. Is he good? Yes. Is he the next Gretzky? Why don't we wait about 20 years and then answer that. It's like Red Sox fans who think Jonathon Papelbon is the next Mariano Rivera. Keep dreaming.

I must say it seems to me that by how much ppl feel they can criticize Crosby they must be wathcing more Pen's games then they are Wing's games. My sports channels I watch don't hype Crosby beyond believe like everyone on here says they do. He's a great young player and does deserve the hype he gets. Who cares if they talk about it him. Last time I checked this was a Wing's board and we were all Wing's fans. Maybe we should worry a little bit less about the media and how they treat Crosby and a little more on the Wing's. To be honest though nobody here could probably go 1 day with out bitching about Crosby. It's time to move on guys.

titanium2 867 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 It might be that I'm not just annoyed with Crosby (although, he is pretty annoying all by himself), but maybe annoyed with the marketing philosophy and "scientific" aspects of business. Or whatever that whole mess is called. Someone mentioned earlier that the NBA used Jordan to expand domestically and then as time went on they used Kobe to expand more internationally. My impression is that there's a reason why they do it that way and it's simply because it works. If that's true, and everything is that simple, then I don't know about anyone else but I don't like how that's the way it works.
T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 Maybe I'm not annoyed because I don't watch that much tv in the first place. I watch the Red Wings when they are on HNIC, or sometimes on the internet. But I don't bother with cable tv and don't pay that much attention to the media. That way, I don't hate somebody because the media may be trying to sell him too much. They may be shoving Crosby down your throat, but they don't have access to mine. The media doesn't have influence over who I like or don't like.
